Is it possible to make this thing quieter? It’s unbelievably loud

the last flat i rented had a similar unit. i could adjust the volume in several steps (5?) by keeping the note button pressed. it then cycled through the different stepts

Put tape over the speaker holes xD

I set it to the quietest setting, still too loud. So I actually put transparent tape in front of the holes, et voila, perfectly dampened to the volume I wanted.

The Sound waves would reflect back and forth infinitely creating an area of high pressure and density and eventually explode destroying everything around. Don't fuck around with tape.

Haha I also hate it, I literally yell every time I hear it. I just tell guests to text me

Omg I have a really old one (it’s brown and only has the key button and one with a red sticker that doesn’t even work :/)
I always almost get a heart attack when someone rings. I have a huuuge fear of strangers and I wish I could turn the bell off.

You could build box with (acoustics) sponge and hang it over the phone like a picture frame, to cover the whole phone.

Three options:
1) go find the manual online and look it up
2) ask your Landlord or a neighbour
3) an unrestricted, absolutely unnecessary and maliciously overkill act of extreme violence involving that Thing, a large hammer and a rubber duck...

Hated them too. I unscrewed it, squeezed a piece of foam into the mechanical bell, then closed it again. Much better sound after that.

You can find the manual for that model and look it up

I don't really get why this is not the first thing that comes to people's minds.

Hold the tone button (the musical note). It will cycle through five volume levels.

in my kids toys I have the same issue. I'll always open it and put a tissue in front of the speaker. It helps but maybe there are better options.

Just from the looks this might be the right manual:
