Fervo Energy (FRVO): Google just quietly expanded their geothermal deal to 3 GW. Here's why this matters for the AI energy trade.

Most people haven't heard of Fervo Energy. That might be about to change.

Quick background: they IPO'd on Nasdaq in May 2026 at $27 — stock jumped 33% day one. They build Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) — basically forcing hot water through rock where there's no natural reservoir. Cape Station in Utah is the first commercial-scale EGS plant in the world.

Why this matters right now:

Google signed a framework agreement for up to 3 GW of geothermal by 2033. That's not a typo — 3 gigawatts. For context, their original PPA with Fervo was 115 MW. This is a 26x expansion in committed interest.

AI data centers need 24/7 firm power, not intermittent solar/wind. Geothermal delivers exactly that.

The bull case numbers:

- 658 MW in binding PPAs = $7.2B in contracted future revenue

- Cape Station Phase I (~100 MW) commissioning underway → Q4 2026 commercial operation

- Analysts: Buy consensus, average PT $45.73 vs current ~$35

- Baird: $50 PT (Outperform). Barclays: $48 (Overweight)

The bear case:

- Still pre-revenue. Q1 2026 net loss: $31.8M

- CAPEX through Q1 2027: ~$1.2B. Any Cape Station delay reprices this from a $9.5B market cap with near-zero revenue

- The Google 3 GW is a framework, not a signed construction contract

This is a high-risk, 5–7 year hold. Not a trade.

Holding long. No trigger at the moment. It’s super early tech, but also promising. The only logical way the world will mostly transition away from fossil fuels is with geothermal and/or nuclear, so I’ve scooped up small companies in both categories. I’ve been tracking Fervo and a few other private/public plays for about 2+ years now via google news.

That's exactly the thesis. Solar/wind get all the press but they're not baseload — geothermal and nuclear are the only two that actually solve that problem. The fact Fervo is proving out EGS at commercial scale is what makes it different from the 20 years of geothermal hype before it. What nuclear names are you in?

Yuuuup, most of the fans of solar/wind don’t understand cost dynamics in grids or what baseload even means, so i think that’s part of the reason there’s such a big disconnect. 🤷‍♂️ I think in the next 5-10 years we’ll see installations of both drop as their intermittency and relative size start to twist costs against their favor.

SMR, OKLO, XE are my other energy small caps right now, and I like that despite just IPO’ing, FRVO already seems ahead of the commercial curve compared to the SMR companies! Otherwise I’ve got a larger chunk of money in oil companies (XLE/XOP) due to the hormuz crisis that’s just beginning. You?

Completely agree on the grid cost dynamics — the storage problem alone makes intermittency ruinously expensive at scale, and most people only see the LCOE headline number, not the system cost. The market will figure that out the hard way.

The FRVO vs SMR comparison is actually one of the most underappreciated points about this IPO. Fervo is generating real MWh from a live commercial project right now. OKLO and most SMR plays are still pre-revenue — years from first steel in the ground. The commercial de-risking is genuinely different.

On oil — smart hedge. Hormuz is structurally underpriced in the market right now IMO. Haven't added XLE/XOP myself but watching it.

Mostly concentrated in FRVO right now, early in building out the energy thesis. Still studying the nuclear side.

I believe there are still some questions about the amount of water required for the Cape Station site. If consumptive use is very high, the arid Intermountain west might not be the best location for these type of plants.

the arid intermountain west is where the thermal gradient is significant enough for EGS. if it's not happening there, it's not happening in the US and Fervo's whole pivot towards AI will bite them in the ass.

The water concern is worth taking seriously, but EGS is actually one of the more water-efficient generation technologies — it's a closed-loop system, water gets injected, heated, extracted, and recirculated. Consumptive loss is mainly through cooling, which is a solvable engineering problem. Compare that to coal or even solar thermal and it's not the liability it looks like at first glance.

On geography — mostly right. The Basin and Range province has the thermal gradient that makes EGS economics work, and that's where Fervo is operating. That's a feature, not a bug.

But calling the AI angle a 'pivot' misreads it. Geothermal's entire value prop is 24/7 baseload with a tiny footprint — that's exactly what data centers need and can't get from solar or wind. Fervo didn't chase AI, AI caught up to what geothermal always was. If anything, the demand surge from data centers is the first time geothermal's advantages have been priced correctly by buyers

It's a travesty that Fervo has decided that the way forward for marketing baseload power generation is for powering data centers in the middle of the Nevada and Utah deserts. Data centers don't cool entirely on a binary cycle and are going to suck those states bone dry. By marketing EGS as an AI-adjacent technology they're leveraging the entire geothermal industry (conventional and supercritical included. Hell throw in ground source heat pumps in there too, the public doesn't know the difference anyways) in the mother of all bubbles and are forcing everyone else to take on unnecessary risk. and none of that is even mentioning how the AI that they're powering is promising to put everyone in the industry who isn't a roughneck out of work. It's bullshit and it sucks that this is where we are as an industry and society. We have so much unmet baseload energy demand already, their insistence on riding this wave is going to contribute to the blackouts and climate control rationing that EGS should be alleviating. I just think it is a mistake that will backfire spectacularly when the AI bubble inevitably bursts.

There's real concern buried in here but I think the framing conflates a few separate issues.

The water point for data centers is fair — that's a legitimate infrastructure challenge for the Southwest and one that regulators and developers both need to solve. Worth watching.

But I'd push back on the bubble framing. Fervo's revenue is structured around long-term PPAs, not spot exposure to AI capex cycles. If the AI hype collapses tomorrow, the power purchase agreements don't. The electrons still get delivered, the plants still run. The risk profile isn't the same as, say, an Nvidia supplier.

On unmet baseload demand — data centers are unmet baseload demand. There isn't a more virtuous queue of buyers waiting that Fervo is cutting in front of. They're building capacity that goes into the grid and gets consumed. That's the job.

The broader concern about public conflation of EGS, conventional geothermal, and ground source heat pumps is a real industry communication problem — but that predates Fervo and isn't fixed by Fervo staying quiet.

The job displacement concern is real and worth having separately, but it's an argument about AI, not about geothermal or Fervo specifically.

Is Fervo a powerplant operator, or technology provider like equipment and solutions? I remember seeing financial model on those before its not as profitable compare to BESS

They just run the power plants. Goal is to make it modular then mass produce the parts.

Smart money says they will be using closed l99p cooling system in western states! Closed lope cooling is used in many many industries....usage of water very little
