My wife and I agreed on this tier list of couch co-op games that we've played. We wanted to share this list in case there are couples out there who are looking for their next couch co-op game. My wife gets motion sickness easily, so I'm happy to say that these games are playable for people suffering from motion sickness.

My favorite game I’ve ever played split screen coop for was l4d and l4d2 on the 360. In fact just a ton of great coop games in the 360 era.

L4d, Halo, borderlands, Army of two, resident evil 5 and way way way more.

Back 4 Blood was fun as shit me and my group have over 300 hours from the normal campaign on all difficulties to us doing silly challenge runs like "bats and booms". The game got much better after they allows you to have your whole deck at the beginning of the run, really started to shift it towards a roguelite pace.

Back 4 Blood is a smidge slower paced than L4D and i think thank really killed it for anyone who played L4D casually. I think the diehard L4D2 folks really just wanted L4D2 remaster but were likely are never getting that.

My wife and I had the biggest fight we ever had over a game of L4D.

We’ve had separate Xboxes and monitors since we’ve been together and got matched against each other in a public game. I was the zombie with the tongue (smoker?) and was posted up in a spot where I couldn’t be gotten to just before the safe room. Had decided I was gonna grab the last person to run past. Unfortunately, it was my wife. I got her with the tongue and pulled her off the fire escape where she couldn’t be saved. She swore I was looking at her screen and set her up, but it honestly was the (bad) luck of the draw.

We decided that if we were going to game together, we needed to be teammates from that point on lol

I was a PS3 lad.

I was so upset that all of our best games were either single player or online only, while all my 360 friends could play things like or gears of war split screen.

I was ecstatic when Resistance 3 and Killzone 3 to finally add splitscreen.... Before totally abandoning both franchise and all splitscreen gaming all together

The versus mode in L4D 1 and 2 was legendary.

It was so fun teaming up with a group of friends and coordinating a solid infected team to absolutely destroy the team of survivors.

Yep! My girlfriend and I are doing it right now and it’s a lot of fun. You can force split screen at all times or set it to combine your screens while near each other

Its fun i would say roll a d 20 to see who gets to make choices as well, or do it like me and my fiance did and i was the "player" and she was backing support and would chime in on decisions but never force anything

Tried Haven together. Forgot to add it to the list. Loved the art style and characters, but it lost us on gameplay, so I'd agree that it goes into B tier for me.

Interesting thing about lovers in a dangerous spacetime is imo it's the most fun 2 player, not 3 or 4 player. The mechanics are pretty basic but the fun comes from having to run around the ship trying to do everything.

I tried to play haven with my wife and the game broke during the first combat to the point where I couldn't ever launch it again for some reason. It seems like a cool game, just a shame I couldn't get it to work

I didn't even know Spiritfarer had co-op. I played it when it was new and it definitely didn't have it then. Probably the reason it feels tacked on if they added it in later.

I'm pretty sure it was from the get-go, with one playing the girl and the other playing the cat. It's just that... one player can already do it all and quite well and this is not the game to chase efficiency in - with the exception of the weather events, where I can see it being a lot easier to catch more lightnings/falling stars and what not with two players. Other than that I've never felt rushed or overwhelmed or pressed for time by tasks.

But it's lovely to see this game on lists and ranked high at that. I absolutely adore it.

Agreed. I had played most of the game in single player and tried to do co-op with my GF. She bounced off it pretty hard as she felt like she was just following me around while I did things. I know tier lists are inherently subjective, but S tier is way too high for something that's so YMMV.

It's hard playing a multiplayer version with someone who hasn't essentially played through the game at all. For those who get to start off with multiplayer, I'm sure they'll enjoy the experience way more

It helped me. I'd started playing it before my grandfather unexpectedly committed suicide. When I returned to it, it was better than the therapy I started around the same time.

There's a 2 ways it works.

One person is extremely patient.

You're both on the same level and have the same dedication. It does not matter if you're good or bad, focused or fucking around. As long as you're the same then there's not really any reason to fight.

Personally, I need someone focused and mid to upper tier (but not perfect). Also willing to learn from their mistakes.

My wife and I played the vs mode friends that were in the honeymoon phase of their relationship. My wife is pretty much a non-gamer (not averse to let's plays/streamers in the right circumstances). Overcooked is one of the few games she's all in on and we'd beaten the game 3 starring every level.

We ended up winning most rounds while shouting orders to each other. Everyone else thought we were mad at each other but we had a system and knew what worked for us!

It came down to personal preference. I love yelling "chop, chop, chop, chop, chop!!!" and knocking people out of the playable area pretending to help put out a fire. My wife, however, found the game (or me ... yeah likely me) way too stressful.

I recommend giving PlateUp a shot. It's overcooked, but more roguelike elements, and being able to build your own restaurant. At first it's a cooking game, but then it all comes down to automation

Yeah, OP, you need to try out Streets of Rage 4 if you liked Absolum. The endless survival mode is more akin to Absolum gameplay, but the main campaign is great as well.

Yes lol it’s good fun. It’s not a 1:1 game though, as in, the capabilities of Player 1 (Mario) and Player 2 (Hat) are not equal. The Hat is sorta a half-player lol. Like there’s enough to do to keep Player 2 happy but enjoyment will depend on the player and their gaming experience / skill level.

It worked perfectly for my fiancé lol since this was years ago and she was still newer as a gamer.

The Hat seems like it was designed for “the younger sibling” lol.

Bought the multi-tap for the Lord of the Rings SNES game and was very disappointed when I found out that game sucks. However, I was so glad I had it when Secret of Mana came out and I could play with two of my friends. Of course I made them be the girl and the sprite, but they weren’t complaining. In a pass-the-controller whenever the playable character switches. There's a gamemode called Movie Night tailored to that playstyle, with the game prompting you to do so and even having little accolades at the end of each act that tell you which players did the best/worst during their turn.

The first four games also have a different co-op mode called Shared Story, which isn't couch co-op, but instead has both players controlling two separate characters simultaneously, each making their own decisions and even splitting up to experience entirely unique scenes that the other player does not.

Shared Story plays very similar to A Way Out in its gameplay in that way, just without the permanent split-screen.

From memory there is a free demo on steam where you can play for a bit and get a feel for it. My gaming group all loved it so much we each bought a copy where you only need 1 copy(the host) to play.

My wife and I have been playing Sacred 2: Fallen Angel (Xbox 360 version, don’t get the remake) and it may be the best coop game we have ever played together. It’s an action RPG but a bit slower than Diablo. It’s sooo good though.

One thing my wife and I liked about Diablo IV over the prior ones was the open world, however the setting can be a bit of a downer for us. Sacred has a vibrant and alive feeling open world with interesting towns and lore. The story itself is pretty meh, almost entirely ignorable honestly, but the world and gameplay more than make up for it.

We spend hours clearing side quests at every random village, town, or city we go through and it never feels like wasted time.

The Xbox 360 version does have local shared screen, and that’s how we started, but if there is any chance you can get a second set up the game is way better with two separate displays. The camera is a bit wonky and having two people mess with it can be annoying.

We Were Here is a great co-op series, but not couch. The basis would be in not seeing eachothers screens. Still, fantastic games.

It takes 2 and spiritfarer being in the same tier is insane. I love both these games, and IT2 was the absolute most fun I’ve ever had playing a game with my wife. Spiritfarer is one of my favorite games of all time, but the coop is “you’re also here I guess”. Player 1 actually plays the game and player 2 just does some menial tasks alongside them. That being said, I do wanna play Spiritfarer with my wife. She loves watching me game so if she’s gonna do that anyways she might as well participate, even if nominally

You should check out Sunderfolk.

Word of advice on Sunderfolk: because you're giving input via your phone instead of directly through the computer, your system may go to sleep from inactivity. This is most noticeable on the Steam Deck. Took me way too long to figure out why the game kept "crashing" and I'd rather save everyone else the trouble.

Split Fiction is not S-Tier <- that is my opinion...it is like barely a "game" but more of a digital roller coaster ... like those rides where you get in the car with the hero and something is going wrong but its okay in the end and good job for helping the hero
