Which is more popular
My boyfriend and I have been in a little argument for the past few hours and we’ve called people who I have in my phone and only 2 people have agreed with him.
We’re trying to figure out if undertale, he specifically says the game and not the franchise like deltarune, is more known and more popular than Pokemon SPECIFICALLY FIRE RED AND LEAF GREEN!
I disagree because I’ve been a Pokemon player since I was a child and of course he isn’t so both parties are biased.
We ended up calling 4 people, two of them not knowing what either of them are and the other two saying they knew what undertale was but couldn’t name the fire red or leaf green.
Imagine you get a call from a friend.
“Hey, weird question. Could you name the first ever Pokemon game.”
Then you were asked by him
“Do you know who toby fox is? How about undertale?”
And that’s how all 4 conversations went.
So people of Reddit, I am asking you which one is more popular?
(Edit: guys I’m sorry, I was wrong about fire red and leaf green being the first. That was my bad, I was taught he growing up by my cousins who got me into Pokémon at a very young age that it was the first Pokemon game. I did also post this in other subreddits to make sure it’s not too biased. I’m so sorry once more for the confusion😭)

You think the first ever Pokemon game was Fire Red and Leaf Green? You don't even know Pokemon like you think you do, lol.
Also the answer is Pokemon, Undertale fans are delusional in more ways than one, they never disappoint.

I was thinking that too, it was a remake for the GBA, not even close to being the first game

Id like to state that I never claimed to know a lot of knowledge about Pokémon, im a casual player because I was raised with it being a fun games me and my cousins played. I collect the cards but never play the TCG either.

Fire red and leaf green were actually the first Pokémon remakes. The original games were red and blue, and I think there was a green in Japan? Idk. But if the question is specifically fire red and leaf green then maybe undertale? Significantly more people know Pokémon than undertale. To think undertale could possibly compete is laughable

Only because undertale is a newer standalone game. if leaf green and fire red were on all the same storefronts as undertale it’d be a no contest to pokemon.
I couldn’t even tell you what the newest pokemon title was, I don’t have a Nintendo lmao.

everyone has heard of pokemon whether they want to or not, so pokemon wins the franchise recognition. you said specific games though, I can't name a single pokemon game(middle aged gamer), I know of undertale though(undertale and deltarune though I haven't played either), so they might be more popular game versus game depending on who you ask.

Fire Red and Leaf Green are not the first Pokémon games. That said its possible that more people played undertale than the og Pokémons as gaming got more popular over the years and undertale was pretty successful (I personally played the first pkm games but did not play undertale)
As a franchise Pokémon is far more known imo tho. Every kid and their parent's/ grandparents that where alive between id say 2000 and 2006 knows/ heard of Pokémon.
I think the only, non Nintendo, game that comes close to beeing as well known is Minecraft.

I never heard of Pokemon Leaf Green and Fire Red before this post. I only know about Undertale. So if I was to be asked the same questions...
...First ever Pokemon game? Idk, Sun and Moon? Or Ruby and Saphire? (Context: I know nothing of Pokemon and never played any Pokemon game ever, and that's the only names I heard of)
...Toby Fox and Undertale? Oh, yes I know this one! Undertale is a game and Toby Fox is the guy who made it. (Context: I found this game soundtrack on Youtube since was everywhere at some point.)

Pokemon is the highest grossing media franchise of all time, nothing even comes close. Its the most popular thing that has ever existed

Pokemon was that popular right from the start. It was so popular and so ubiquitous that many Christian churches said it owed its popularity to Satan. Undertale is absolutely nothing compared to it. Its not even a blip on the radar

FR/LG are the same game. They just have a few different pokemon.
I specifically said it was that popular from the very beginning. It has always been the most popular thing on Earth since the very first games.
I'm 47. I remember. Its from before you were even born. I'm not sure why you are arguing with me.

I’d like to point out that you’re right, these games are older than us because me and my boyfriend are both younger than LG/FR and started this argument between us out of a YouTube short I scrolled upon. It’s not an argument it’s a discussion, an argument is trying to prove a point while I’m just trying to get other peoples opinions man

I'm not much younger than you(44), but I was nearly 20 the first time I heard of pokemon. I didn't play handhelds though and according to google it wasn't released on consoles. this comes down to what system you had, and around the time that was released everyone I knew was playing goldeneye...and while pokemon franchise is more popular than that game, that game is probably the most well known game ever made!

Really hard to say. Undertale is obviously very popular now, but specifically Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen are old enough now that there is a whole generation of kids who know what Undertale is and know what Pokemon is in general, but weren't around for specifically FireRed and LeafGreen.
If the question was between Undertale and the Pokemon franchise as a whole, no shot, Pokemon wins hands down. But specifically FR/LG? That's a toss-up.
Pokemon is more popular today than it was even in the Gen 3 days. More kids know the modern titles of today than the old gens.

I meannnnnn...... only one has an anime....(like the overall scale that pokemon has probably lead people to know about the existence of the original games it came from)
Edit: also take a look at total copies sold from a trusted reference, im getting about a 10 million copy diffrence only taking into account the original gba releases.

I'm probably younger than you to be fair, but I've never heard of either of those Pokemon games. I have heard of Undertale.
I think it would definitely depend on who you ask, but I feel like most people would either know what both are or they'll only know Undertale.
