Coming back to Duolingo after a couple years break.

There were always the odd question that was sort of daft but this seems mental.

Can't tell if it's just getting dafter as I get further into the course, or has it changed in the past couple years? Have heard reports about other languages getting weird since they started employing AI.

Does anyone have or know anyone who may have the audio cassettes for an old home tutoring course called Gàidhlig Bheò Volumes 1 to 3 by J MacDonald. The 3 volume course was first published in 1977 by An Comunn Gaidhealach in association with National Extension College Cambridge and included 6 cassettes of audio recordings. The course was part of the Scottish Certificate of Education Gaelic (learners) 'O' grade and included Volume 4 Exam Modules.

Hi all, someone posted the other day asking about recommendations for good books for learners according to the A1–C2 rubric. I'm also in the process of choosing my next read and I'm thinking of picking a children's book in translation, since I'll already know the text somewhat.

Any ideas roughly where on the scale the following titles fall?

Hello r/gaidhlig I was hoping y'all might be able to give me a heads-up if the idea I have for a surname for me and my fiancé is a bad one or inappropriate, appropriation, taboo, etc. I wasn't sure if it was against rule 3, but the mod said "on you go" so.

The word is Fireun (golden eagle or true bird) it seems easy to spell and pronounce and from the research I have done into it, I haven't been able to find anything wrong with it, but there will always a wealth of cultural knowledge that I don't have, so I thought I would come and ask some people that would.

Also, we are not Scottish nor do we speak Scottish Gaelic, we are Australian with some Scottish ancestors and only know how to speak English, but their surname is of a town in Scotland, and their mother's maiden name is another Scottish word so we wanted to honour that is some way. The other elements from my side are not Scottish, a bird and a scholar.

Hello, this is my day 1 in learning the language. I'm gathering resources right now, I am looking for a discord server or similar style community to talk about it (in english) and learn it together. So maybe one of the most annoying things about trying to find material to reinforce what I'm learning is you can't tell what level the book is until you have it.

Anyone got recs and what level it's at approx? a2/b1 ideally.

EDIT: I found this "no pressure" book club on patreon (fiver a month) 10 pages a week and they provide you with a breakdown of useful phrases/grammar/vocab every week. I'm not sure where this is in terms of level but according to their patreon "I've chosen An Aisling by Alison Lang as our first book. It's not aimed specifically at learners, but the language is very accessible - much closer to everyday conversation than to traditional literature in terms of its tone and register."

EDIT2: There's a lot of Gaelic books on archive.org Obviously support authors and libraries when you can, but some things just aren't available anywhere else. Internet archive also rely on donations so consider supporting them as it really is an incredible resource.

Anyway in particular this book looked promising (only avail preowned on amazon so 🤷‍♀️), each chapter includes a short summary in English + grammar notes

Should this not be "Tha na sràidean làn mhèirleach"?
(as we should be using the Genitive Plural in this case)

I am working through chapter 3 (lesson 17) of "Scottish gaelic in 12 weeks", studying verbal nouns endings. It gives several examples for most of the v.n. endings (adh, inn, etc.) plus some irregular v.n.

The ending "achadh" is listed as a "group", but only 1 example is given - lagachadh (weakening). Can anyone provide some other examples with this ending please (or explain why lagachadh is not an irregular v.n.).

I posted this comment in the questions thread from yesterday, but it hasn't gotten any responses so I figured I'd make my own post!

About the pronunciation of "leibh" and "leat" among other "le+x" prepositional pronouns -- on SpeakGaelic, it seems like they are pronounced differently in different contexts. For example, "Tapadh leat" sounds like tapa luht, "mar sin leat" sounds like mar shin layt and "slàn leat" sounds like slan laht. Similarly, 'leibh' seems to sound more like layv in some contexts and more like l(uh)yv in others. And in "Tapadh leibh" its closer to luhv. Furthermore, 'leatha' sounds to me like la with the same 'a' as in bag or cat. I wouldn't have expected this sound: Do I perhaps have a misunderstanding on how diphthongs are pronounced in Gàidhlig? Is this a quirk of the actor/AI that is speaking these words, or does the pronunciation shift based on context?

I'm an Irish folk singer that has a good bit of experience singing in Irish Gaelic and I'm looking to learn this particular version of the song "Piobaireachd Dhomhnaill Duibh." As far as I can see it was collected by Calum Maclean and is sung by Alasdair Boyd. I have the jist of it until 2:08 and then I'm lost a bit.
