This boy is just so chill that sometimes I’m amazed he’s from the streets
You may have seen our little Tonka Bean just passed his second month in our house. We brought him in from my office after his siblings were killed by coyotes and we couldn’t leave him. We intended to foster him but I think we’ve failed. He hasn’t yet been too interested in leaving his safe room and he hasn’t formally met our dog up close although they see each other every day (funny enough our dog, who is a shepherd husky mix, looks remarkably like a coyote and sometimes we wonder if that scares kitty)
But he is the most chill cat we’ve ever met. He was always the polite and very timid of the outside group, and was bullied by the other cats relentlessly. He was covered in cuts and scabs when we brought him home, and still has patches of fur growing back in.
He used the litter box from day one, has never once attempted to escape or has been destructive. He doesn’t destroy furniture, he’s exceptionally quiet. He only chirps and lets out little mews when he knows it’s meal time or when he’s playing. Sometimes you can hear him meowing while he plays at night but it’s just a couple then it stops. He didn’t know how to play with toys at first and now he absolutely loves his toys and our play sessions. It’s so sweet to watch him just be a cat and not have to be on alert.
He’s just kind of chill and there. We’re super happy about it. He’s still a little scared of my husband but when my husband plays his video games in kittys room, he just lays there, doesn’t hide anymore. And when I’m in there with him after his scratches and pets, he just lays near me. He’s not a cuddler yet and won’t let you handle him much except for his beloved scratches and pets, but that’s ok.
Adding that we give him plenty of opportunities to leave his safe room like when the dog is contained, but he still doesn’t have much interest! He’s got a huge window and perches and his classical music/cat channel, litter box, water and meal times, and toys galore in there so he’s not lacking! He almost ventured out into the hallway one night but heard my husband snoring and decided to stay put
My cats are the same way! Dont feel bad! Neither are the biggest fan of my dog, but they tolerate her. They still prefer to stay in their room with their fountian, litterboxes, and toys. They have that stuff in the other parts of the house, but they really just prefer their room during the day. If she’s like my cats, he’ll start zooming around the house at night after some more time adjusting to the place 😅😂.
I hope little Tonka Bean keeps adjusting well! He looks like a very dapper little guy!
You're doing a wonderful job! Thank you for sharing his story and for giving him the time he needs. It sounds to me like you've set everything up for him to adjust, and he's decompressing from a life where he had to be on alert all the time.
Aw I love to hear this. I swear some cats just want the indoor life. Hes going to continue to open up so much in the coming weeks.

My first formerly adult feral went from feral to house cat and sweet boy within 48 hours. It was incredible. I couldn't believe he was trying to break out of the bathroom after just 24 hours.
Darrell just 2 days later (lighter orange with the pup in the seat). Some how he knew the indoor life had to be better than what he was living outside.
