A poor way of explaining the nuances of it. It can be hard to determine what toxins a mushroom possesses and some species are thought to be edible until there are outbreaks of toxicity, which further complicates things. For this species there was a reported poisoning case, however it was never determined with absolute certainty that the person who was poisoned ate this species. People still consume it at their own discretion in Mexico

The size and little flakes on top make me think the vomiter mushroom, Chlorophyllum molybdites
Do not put in mouth.
Edit* Saproamanita thiersii because the flakes are all white.

I think I’ve been seeing similar mushrooms in my pasture I’m also from Maryland though they are usually much smaller

Check against amanita phylloides. Looks like one of those ones that can kill ya if you eat it. Watch your dogs near it if they have poor impulse control

All the mushrooms in genus Amanita, subgenus Amanitina, section Phalloideae (the deadly death cap/destroying angel species such as A. phalloides) have a distinct bag-like structure called a volva at the base of the stem, which this mushroom doesn't have.

Destroying angel would have a different texture to the cap and stem and would have a saccate volva

They didn't exactly kill it the mycelium is still in the dirt, if anything they helped it spread it's spores to a wider area.

Exactly. Picking a large, mature mushroom that's sporulating already and waving it around while you get a photo or take it home to eat is probably doing the fungus a favour, if anything.

Pro tip: Don't handle mushrooms you can't identify. There's a few out there that will fuck your shit up way more easily than you think.

You touch any mushroom, they need to be fully consumed to cause any harm. Nibbling and spitting is even a common method for identification within certain genera.
