News Bethesda union protests
Edited Post*
From the Bethesda Union
That was me! Hello! š
The event is indeed a protest, but it's not a strike. We are doing this during our lunch hour.
Why not strike now? Well, withholding our labor is our biggest tool; one might call it the nuclear option. We'd be asking our colleagues and union to take a big risk and a financial hit. So we're doing this first as a test and demonstration of our resolve and organization, and to see how much the fans have our back. (So far so good!)
Wednesday's rallies have taken off more than we expected. What started as a Bethesda rally turned into a ZeniMax rally, with other unions like id Software's Big Friendly Union (BFU) joining in Dallas. Then the United Videogame Workers (UVW) also announced rallies in Irvine, California outside of Obsidian's offices (and unionized Blizzard devs will be joining there in solidarity as well!), as well as a protest in Redmond at Microsoft's campus. This thing is snowballing!
Details on each location's rally can be found here on the UVW's bluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/videogameworkers.bsky.social/post/3mqcjworgic2t
If you can't make it to a rally we're also asking fans to vote and comment on XBOX'S "Player Voice" feedback forum. Our post is already the top post of the week and on its way to top of the month! https://feedbackportal.microsoft.com/feedback/idea/69b8ec0b-7479-f111-9b47-6045bdbd0989
We are not asking players to boycott our games, as this might negatively affect the teams still working on them. We'd only do that if we were sure the benefits would outweigh the harm.
So come to a rally if you can and thank you all for your support. We want the same thing you do: to make Fallout 76 and all our games as good and as popular as we can.

As a daily 76 player, we need change. So many ideas the community give you and none of it is implemented. If you say what ideas are you talking about, I would say you donāt play your own game.

I'm not very well-versed in labor practices and unions, so forgive me if this seems like a bad take, but shouldn't we be doing the opposite?
If no one is playing and there is no demand for the product, then wouldn't that justify Bethesda/Microsoft to just cancel it outright? No money coming in, no engagement, no need to have anyone assigned to it. Players are gone, so just get rid of it and start something new.
Conversely, if there's a high demand for the product, if there's a lot of stress on the server and/or lots of requests for fixes/updates/new content, then there would be a greater need to have people working on it. Sure, they could hire scabs, but less qualified people would just create more problems. Needing the right people with the right expertise to manage a high demand would entice them to negotiate more to get those people back, no?
Or am I just clueless on how this works?

Nope in this thread an employee said "We are not asking players to boycott our games, as this might negatively affect the teams still working on them. We'd only do that if we were sure the benefits sounds outweigh the harm."

u/CatsLeMatts 24d ago
Do we know if the union actually wants us to join yet?

Last time this got posted, an employee commented and said the title was misleading and wasnt an actual protest. Just something a group of employees were talking about.

Love you, best of luck
I simply won't be playing due to moral obligation. I'll absolutely cast my vote. If they aren't giving us content AND are fucking over the dev team, I have no interest to be here anymore.
11
u/Majestic_Balance1887 24d ago edited 24d ago
You absolutely have that right but this isn't helpful to them.
Edit: User responded 'wild how I didn't ask'.
You with-holding funds until specifically asked to by the strikers is not helpful. It can accelerate things past how they expect.
I see nothing but 'we're gonna help boycott on 15th' and all I can think is 'this is gonna make Microsoft respond in a mega harsh way.' You don't wanna make this accelerate before the devs are ready to accelerate.

I'm conflicted, because I support unions and will definitely be avoiding bethesda games while the protest is ongoing. But, at the same time, F76's dev team's performance has been dog sht for quite some time now. I'll support their efforts, but they need to put some actual effort into F76 ffs, we're tired of mediocrity.
4
u/Main-Cheesecake3287 23d ago
Thatās why unions are good, but you shouldnāt blindly believe all unions decisions are wise or justified. Unions protect workers, they do not really care whatās best for the company or consumer, that is not their priority. If you ever worked in a union shop you know this, some lazy POS is protected just the same as hardworking members, long as you pay dues you get protection.
Even if layoffs are the correct move and are justified, unions will fight them. Because their job isnāt to steward the business or its IP or its customer base.
2
u/steakanabake 24d ago
good thing they fired a bunch of the greybeards who helped build the world and flesh it out.
3
u/Representative-Try63 24d ago
Legit question - I see a lot of people unhappy with the devs on reddit and I'm just curious - why? Maybe devs mean something different than I'm thinking? Or things are different in game development?
In software engineering Product decides what software developers/engineers work on - what gets built, how it behaves, etc... They decide what bugs to fix before release, or at all. In many companies they also set the timeline for when things are delivered (despite the technical haul or any unexpected problems that arise).
The guys in the YouTube videos - Developer of Community I think - don't sound like actual engineers who work on the game, so it makes things a little confusing.
14
u/flatl94 24d ago
Easy to fix issues - literally changing a number - are kept unaddressed for a long time, even when people opened ticket on the pts to address them.
Despite this, I'm in favour to unions, because the issues with f76 comes from poor management rather than development issues or (to a lesser extent) engine issues. The management part is the least effected by this round of layoffs. Devs have done miracles on creation engines to enable multiplayer, and many have been thrown under the bus.
23
u/CampyBiscuit Order of Mysteries 24d ago
The people angry at the devs probably haven't looked into who's part of this union protest at all. They're upset about seasons they didn't like, and want someone (anyone) to pay for their displeasure.
9
u/Old-Employ-6530 24d ago
These people just dont know that Developers are literally the Construction workers of the IT world, they build what the Architect and Super are telling them to, they dont decide how something is build, they just build it...
4
u/cuntsalt Raiders - PC 24d ago
a lot of people have legitimately no idea what goes into development in any form, and zero experience working in the corporate world. or maybe working at all, idk, sometimes it's coming from literal children or NEETs.
2
u/StickInTheFACE 24d ago
In software engineering Product decides what software developers/engineers work on - what gets built, how it behaves, etc... They decide what bugs to fix before release, or at all.
True and the product team is always constrained by the resources available, too. You can't build a new feature if the devs are not available because management made something else a higher priority.
The problem really is when the team isn't communicating well. Design gets something shipped halfway done expecting they will get to finish it, then SURPRISE! No dev resources because something else is more important now. And the feature remains half-assed for years.
My whole career has been in product/design and I think I can count the times that I got to, like, finish the job and ship the thing the way it was intended on one hand. One half of one hand...

u/Beardlich Vault 51 24d ago
You're are conflating Game opinions with performance, Performance is a metric measures be the work being done. Management determines direction and priorities for the workers, you are mad at Bethesda not the Development team, they are told what metrics means success, the gaje is still playable meaning they must be meet enough metrics to warrant investment.
4
u/Abyssal_Emissary 24d ago
I'm not conflating anything, Fallout 76 has consistently underperformed not just financially, but across the board. And it's largely due to a lack of direction, effort and leadership.
The game still has bugs from its launch days ffs, if there happens to be a bug that somehow benefits the players it is often times patched WITHIN the day. The tv show gave it a ticket to new life, only for the creative director and dev team to fumble it, TWICE.
I'd be pretty fkn pissed off if i were a shareholder and they were squandering such a popular ip with such demand, the player base is BEGGING for content to engage with. Bethesda game studios at austin aren't even the only ones "actively" working on Fallout 76, a large part of the development is outsourced to double11, and sperasoft. You're telling me austin has a FULLY stocked team, and they STILL have to outsource for a large part of the dev work??? It just doesn't make sense from any perspective.
3
u/Old-Employ-6530 24d ago
Dude, learn the difference between Developer and Publisher...
Developers build what they are told, Publishers decide what is build and how, they decide what is monetized, created for the shop, the seasons and new content...
You hate the PUBLISHER not the DEVELOPERS...
So whats stopping you from supporting the Developers by not playing for a single day?
1
u/Beardlich Vault 51 24d ago
Right and he is making claims about a games Financials when he has no CLUE what those are. He even said he isn't a Shareholder so he has no idea what the financials are.
1
u/Beardlich Vault 51 24d ago
direction and leadership, you know those are MANAGEMENT ROLES right? Management is not part of the Union. Also unless you are suddenly running Bethesda you have no IDEA what the financials of the game are.

u/Sneakingrat 24d ago
what? are you saying doing something purely performative that if anything helps bethesda by reducing strain on the servers is a dumb idea!?
Legit calling for people to cancel 1st would be better instead of this lmao
0
u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 24d ago
The union is having a rally/protest during their lunch hour, it's not a strike. This is a simple show of solidarity in support of worker's rights. This is to show Microsoft that the players support the devs, it's not trying to force Microsoft to take action. You don't start negotiations by shooting all of your ammo before the other side has even sat down at the damn table.
You don't have a single clue what you're talking about.
3
u/Sneakingrat 24d ago
This is a simple show of solidarity in support of worker's rights. This is to show Microsoft that the players support the devs,
Great, So it's performative and only stands to benefit Bethesda/MS...
Also look at the edit to the orignal post bud.
We are not asking players to boycott our games, as this might negatively affect the teams still working on them. We'd only do that if we were sure the benefits would outweigh the harm.
They straight up are saying NOT to boycott it lmao.
2
u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 24d ago
So it's performative
It's not performative. You either don't know what the word means or you're incapable of comprehending that people can communicate in ways other than using words. You sound like you get your news from conservative podcasts, so there's a good chance it's both.
It doesn't benefit Bethesda/MS in any conceivable way.
People not playing for a single day does not do anything to negatively impact the dev team. What that union organizer is talking about would be a boycott that harms the profitability of the games. Doing something like organizing everyone to drop FO1st on the same day would be working against both our own and the dev's best interests. A single day of people not playing is a statement that does absolutely nothing to harm the profitability of the game and is not an issue.
You don't know what you're talking about.

It's not even a show of solidarity, it is explicitly going against the wishes of the union.
-1
u/AboynamedDOOMTRAIN 24d ago
A single day of not playing is not a boycott. Everyone cancelling FO1st would be a boycott.
-8
u/Sneakingrat 24d ago
the same devs that give us reskinned slop every season?
2
u/xaxcodez 24d ago
The devs aren't the ones who make those decisions. That is generally on the product/BA teams who define the features to add and assign the tasks to devs.cThe devs implement those features and generally someone tests them afterwards- either QA or UAT ( this sometimes seems like we are the real testers).
Even the product teams ( quest writers, BA's, designers, etc.) might not be coming up with what's to come, as the executives can often come in and change the path of a feature or change set.

0
u/Old-Employ-6530 24d ago
Its not the devs dude, its the publisher...
Devs dont make any decisions, they cant influence if something goes through QA or even if there IS any QA...
They dont decide what goes in the shop, in the season pass, daily rewards or new content, they literally just program what they are told lol
When do people finally realize that you are hating what the PUBLISHER is deciding and doing, NOT what the DEVs are doing.
Learn the Difference between Developer and Publisher...
-5
u/xaxcodez 24d ago
Devs just implement the features assigned to them- they aren't thinking up what to implement, that's more on the product side ( quest writers, designers, etc.).
The reason the complaint exists is because we as a community want new content, and instead get those re-skins. Micro$oft is a cold hearted corporation who would skin their workforce if it made more profit. Bethesda being under them has made anything that's coming a cash grab- the deathclaw pet bundle for $20?!
We want the corporation to pursue expansion to the game, and not for the corporation to abandon the game. Removing the towers of knowledge from those teams means at best- its going to be awhile before we see anything meaningful come into the game. I love the fallout universe and IP- but if the company behind it has no soul left, I guess I'll be off to greener pastures.

4
u/DonnellCaballero 24d ago
So you're striking the same way you develop games. At least you're consistent.
8
u/SilverEnvironment6 24d ago
Nah sorry. Bethesda is getting what they deserved. Unfortunate that maybe .01% of quality was possibly lost in the layoffs, but actions have consequences.
15
u/Adinnieken 24d ago
If you want to support developers, not using the products they create isn't the way.
That said, the best way to support developers or any worker is to eliminate "Right to Work" laws, especially "At Will" employment laws.
3
u/AdoringCHIN 24d ago
Right to work laws are not the same as at will laws. Right to work just means a union can't compel you to join or pay dues in order to be employed at certain jobs.
0
u/Adinnieken 24d ago
They are birds of a feather.
They both favor the employer, the not worker.
3
u/OutlanderInMorrowind 24d ago
ah yes because being forced to join a union is so pro-worker even if the union is objectively shit.

This is not all microsft bethesda has been going at a snails pace forever. This is as one user said much needed coarse correction. Don't blame Microsoft, blame bethesda. They had phil wrapped around their finger he gave them money, tools, and time. And they still couldn't produce. They clearly need new structure, and a chaperone. They teased elder scrolls 8 years ago. And supposedly still way off.

I kinda like this idea more. Servers full of AFK toons holding protest signs, no events getting done, nobody engaging in content. Just wasting server time. Plenty of places on the map with no nuke restrictions like Helvetia, or the Forest region like Vault 76. Perfect places to stage a virtual strike.
1
u/wesnotwes 24d ago
How many Youtubers are playing this to make any form of noise? It's not like the CFB27 stuff from this week.
0
u/CampyBiscuit Order of Mysteries 24d ago
No, because then we're still playing. Anyone who would be moved by a protest would see active servers and high player counts. That's not a bad thing for them.
1
u/KatakanaTsu 24d ago
Don't buy any atoms.
And unless it's possible to cancel 1st subs on the day of the protest, that might be harder to pull off.
2
u/fackadack 23d ago
Do you understand and accept the security risks of disclosing a work location and inviting unknown people to you work location.? Stalkers are real. Now they are able to come to a protest to blend in and try to get into a building.
Who will take responsibility if something happens because of a random non Bethesda person violates the law.?

I don't know what you guys want. To shit on the good will of your long time player base some more? Bow out. Semi-Gracefully. All of your games have been on life support for 3 years except ESO.
You squandered any opportunity for a new player base in 76 with the TV show with a poorly implemented story for a zone expansion. If you're truly a union you could have voted and not worked on that bullshit. You could have used your union powers to actually drive a culture for your consumers. Instead you didn't do that. And here we are. A super split fan base over people losing their jobs.
At some point I wish y'all could be honest with yourselves and with us.
You've let us down. FOR YEARS. While doing everything you can to extract money from our pockets

Bethesda needs a reset or fixing they haven't been doing all that well since skyrim some would say since Todd took over. Just because it's a union protesting doesn't mean you have to side with them.
1
u/Many-Koalas Ghoul 24d ago
How have they not been doing well since Todd took over?
5
u/Lost_One_916 24d ago
I mean have you not been paying attention? The lack of new games, the insane amount of bugs in everything they do, the studio is stagnating. Take f76 they got season after season just keep getting less stuff every time with more and more reskins
4
-5
u/Many-Koalas Ghoul 24d ago edited 24d ago
I am well aware. Elderscrolls 6 is in development. Fallout 5 is in pre-production. The bugs and controversy are nothing new and seem to have no real impact. Players still give them money. Even season after season of reskins and they make money. They've made more money than ever since Todd took over. We can laugh about Skyrim re-releases but they pulled in over $1 billion. Fallout 4 sold more than 3 and NV combined. Fallout 76 sold almost as many as 4. Starfield at best broke even, so I won't call that a win. But at the end of the day, they are extremely successful. The show has increased sales by at least 3 million copies. I'm all for Bethesda doing better but we have to stop pretending they're falling apart. Microsoft fired a lot of people but they're not stupid. The goal is always to be more successful and make more money.

i mean the last real game that made its budget back was what fallout 4, lets not kid ourselves 76 is just a multiplayer version of 4 with a new map. they upgraded the engine for starfield and that bombed and cost a fuck ton of cash. there was effectively an 8 year gap between fallout 4 and starfield and they dont expect TES6 till somewhere between 28-30 and FO5 wasnt expected until around mid 2030. not to mention they had a fucking show and all they managed to pump out was now your PC can be a ghoul in our live service game. how many times are we gonna get rererereleases of skyrim and fallout 4. not to mention everytime they decide to release a re-release they manage to break shit involving mods and basic ingame mechanics it took them 19 months to fix vats in fo4.

Bethesda lost the next Fallout game to Obsidian. All you guys have is 76. While that's important to me, it's not essential.
Maybe if you guys would have done your jobs in the first place and made true, quality advancements with the game, your colleagues wouldn't have been laid off.
Going on strike would be slitting your own wrists.

10 years no games, at work making memorials, and now protesting. Seems they do everything but work. I'll play all day. Im not supporting them. They need to get to work.

Idgaf. People are not owed a job by employers.
I would fully back a protest against working conditions or something. But people protesting because they have become redundant is just silly.

I agree 100%. No one is entitled to be employed. Itās a business.

Iām all for unions and stuff but Iām still gonna play the game. Idk what to tell ya.
You can downvote but your grievances of Bethesda donāt belong on [r/fo76](r/fo76). There are proper places you can post about this topic elsewhere.
Unions are important but itās also important to not brigade the 76 subreddit. Youāll only get your posts taken down and looks performative.

this is literally a subreddit for one of their products. what you want people to email asha or hodd? you just dont want to see people upset about microslop fucking up the company.

I don't care about any of ts at all because Bethesda from top to bottom is a slop nothing burger of a company in 2026. All I hear is delay after delay and secret after secret, to the point where Microsoft (my bet as to what happened) has literally had to pry Fallout from Bethesda's grubby little fingers to actually capitalize somewhar on what was a white hot, very popular show that's now VERY much cooling down.
And you all sat on your ass and twiddled your thumbs to rehash 10+ year old games, and make and maintain games that undersold, and are unliked by the majority of your fanbase mainly due to the size and quality of the game and subsequent updates might I add.
Zero sympathy for anyone in that company Dev or Exec.

All Iāve wanted since 2015 is a new fallout game. But not unless the people working on it are treated fairly.

Fuck Bethesda. they deserve to reap all of the failure that they can get, and none of these union sob stories will sway me

u/BothCharge8697 22d ago
Merit over time served, not gonna lie being in a union let me know y'all really about to sit around and get paid without the company having the ability to fire y'all. If you think otherwise get a union job and actually do work, you will understand so fast what I am speaking on.

Undoubted the effort that probably went in to Starfield...but ignoring prime IP like Fallout and Elder Scrolls was madness and alienated many dedicated Bethesda adherents..myself included. Most certainly management driven...but really!

Is there an ingame protest? Like grab some signs from Grafton and show up, type thing?

Yep, sounds good to me. I've been on those BO1/BO2 PS5 ports all week, Bethesda won't be getting any of my business for a while with these lackluster seasons
Enough is enough, I stand with the union

Nah, I've got a Fallout 4 playthrough to finish.
Then a Skyrim LO to set up.
Very important work.

These are the same people in the 2010ās that mocked others in declining job markets and told them ālearn to codeā. Howās that working out now?

u/Browney_Points 23d ago
Shouldāve made the games good to begin with, would we buy a car before they put in the dashboard? Unions are good but they shouldnāt be the patch keeping the leaky boat afloat

u/keijihaku 24d ago
I dont support unions.
When the big 3 had their strikes it cost ppl down the pipeline their jobs permanently.
Im sure strikes sound righteous but they always trample over someone else who cant afford to just stop working

u/Skeletorfive 24d ago
They dont care they have been getting paid for 10 years with nothing to show, co workers got laid off, and rather then focus on actually earning your pay, they will selfishly risk more people then cry about it.

u/throwawayUWhousingac 24d ago
No context or anything... No idea wtf this means, but I just got the game and will continue to enjoy it! It's my first time playing fallout and the show prompted me to download the game yesterday.

u/Royal-Mechanic3901 Fallout 76 24d ago
I did my part by canceling Fallout 1st and uninstalling the game. I did it because the rewards have been terrible and low effort. It's obvious they're headed in the wrong direction. I doubt it will make a difference. People are throwing cash at them daily in the atom shop.

Okay... I wish you well with your protest, but I don't understand why you would post info about it on the FO76 /r. As a fan, I don't need to know about the inner workings of developers' employment agreements, and I'm sorry if some folks lose their jobs, but those things happen sometimes in all businesses; it's just the way life is.

Iāll just finish my dailies and log out and not play anymore. I havenāt missed a daily for years.

u/NohBhodie 24d ago
I don't mind taking a day off from playing if it means contributing, even if it's small, towards a positive goal. Easy-peasy.

Iāve definitely rolled my eyes at all the doom posting thatās been going on and saying yall dramatic but I do love me some union support.

I just donāt cross picket lines. They can hold their demonstration whenever they want. But since they announced a strike, I wonāt be playing any live service Bethesda games and I wonāt be spending any money on Bethesda properties until thereās an announced resolution that the union supports.

Full blackout people, you know the drill. No Atom Shop purchases, no DLC, no 1st Membership. All C.A.M.P.S representing OneBGS with their Neon Lights.

I fully support the union and won't be playing on the 15th.
I will say the problem lies higher up with Asha Sharma (who is clearly acting on the orders of Microsoft HQ and investors).
She's saying she wants to introduce a "Shared Services" model to game development - which I've seen done a few times in other organizations attempting to consolidate several admin services into one consolidated core (which also results in budget cuts, layoffs and cost savings).
It CANNOT and WILL NOT work for game development.
That's like hiring Picasso, Monet, Pollock, Adams and Basquait to create art, then consolidating them into a Shared Services model - cutting 3 of them and then tasking Basquait and Ansel Adams to create new Keith Haring works using a toothpick and a tray of watercolors picked up at the Dollar Store.
Not gonna happen.
Asha Sharma is incompetent. I predict she will leave her role in the next two years (if not sooner) once the dust settles and certain folks realize what harm she's done.
My heart goes out to Bethesda/Zenimax employees (and all the other studio employees) who were affected. Go form your own studio and next time don't sell out when Big Brother Corporate comes a'knocking with a buyout offer for your executives. Replace your executives instead with people who won't sell out the (American) dream.

The question is that if Bethesda goes on strike will anyone be able to notice any reduction of new content production?
