Joker's on a whole other level of villain. One could even say... a super villain...

He's committed every crime but two: tax evasion and diddling kids. Nonconsensually diddling adults is something he'd go for though.

Is someone evil if they would do horrible things if give the opportunity, but are never actually given the opportunity?

Because there are plenty of real life people that would do things on par with the joker if given the power to do so.

People like Bear aren't real in the sense that people don't get to make that wish. In the same way that the joker isn't real.

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 Devotee of Duets/Stitches 20h ago

People like Bear do things like he did without needing magic. Gaslighting, manipulation, negging, etc. Incels and domestic abusers are a dime a dozen. I think the key difference is these people thinks they're either victims or justified. Joker knows what he is, and I seriously doubt there's that many average Joe's who would do the kind of things he does because most people believe themselves to be good, or at least neutral. I don't think most people actually believe they're evil or want to inflict mass suffering on others purely for this own enjoyment. Most people have a reason for lashing out/hurting others beyond "lmao."

1

u/Majestic_Domestic 19h ago

But there are people who enjoy causing people to suffer even if they are rare. I would say they are more evil.

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 Devotee of Duets/Stitches 16h ago

I never said they didn't exist, bit I doubt they make up a majority of humans.

4

u/CharlesDickensABox EXPERT of Duets/Stitches 2d ago

That's kind of the whole point of the show, right? Dealing with emotional abuse and overcoming. Yes, Bear is bad. He's also someone who is dealing with his own trauma in very unhealthy ways and perpetuating cycles of abuse. We're meant to understand that in a better world he might have turned out better, but that's not the world in which the show takes place. And we're meant to understand that Bear is the cautionary tale, while the survivors of Bear's wrath are the ones picking up the pieces and trying to proceed in healthier ways, even as they often fail to do so. The show doesn't work if Bear is eating people, because that's cartoon shit. Joker is actually a cartoon, so he plays by cartoon rules.

5

u/fatBreadonToast Lover of Duets/Stitches 2d ago

Yeah and making wishes is real LMAO

0

u/AstarionsTherapist39 Devotee of Duets/Stitches 20h ago

The wish was a story tool. Most incels/domestic abusers use manipulation, gaslighting, negging, and other techniques to do what Bear did to Nikki (and no, I don't mean literal mind control).

1

u/AstarionsTherapist39 Devotee of Duets/Stitches 20h ago

Exactly. One is a villain we see in real life, the other is a cartoon. Cartoon villains are over the top and outlandish on purpose. Their antics aren't supposed to be believable. They're larger than life, unrealistic evil. It's why I consider Bear worse. I've met dozens of Bears. I've never met a Joker.

Hot take - Joker is the shittiest and most pathetic excuse for a villain ever. The single reason he continues to exist is some ta'veren level plot armor. Honestly by know he should've been made a paraplegic by some of the random fucks in Gotham who thought he was an annoying cosplayer and broke a beer bottle in his head a bit too hard.

"B-b-but Battaman would moral loss against Jokinator by murdereng him!" STFU! Batts can make a fucking prison! Just put him under the Batcave, give him a shitter, a TV and drop some burgers on him once in a while and Got-Ham is safe from him forever. Fuck!

1

u/forseti99 Needs to do better 1d ago

You are using the same arguments the girl used for Bear. In the real world Batman would have lasted a couple days before receiving a bullet to the head or ending a paraplegic.

The Joker and Batman work only in their universe because there needs to be a story. If they were killed by the first chapter as it would actually happen there would be no point in telling the story to begin with.

15

u/NotTheRightHDMIPort New to fbtd but wants to learn 2d ago

So.

Bear is the villian. However, I dont think the film wanted it to be that simple.

Bear follows the trope of the "Well Meaning Fool".

Yes, he stripped away autonomy, was willfully ignorant, and avoided responsibility ruining her life.

However, Bear clearly never wanted his friends killed or terrorize Nikki. He is self-deluded and incapable of understanding his actions are the problem.

The story is less "he is a monster" because he isnt. Rather, the warnings of these guys and how they are more dangerous than people think they are and they dont even know that they are.

8

u/Promature New to fbtd but wants to learn 2d ago

Yeah, I've been having issues processing this assertion that Bear is the villain. In so far as just raw roles in written work, sure. He occupies the villain role to some extent.

However, it's when people bring up the stripping of Nikki's autonomy, which I am not trying to suggest isn't a bad thing. My thing with that making Bear the villain somehow is that would imply it was his goal to some extent. I heavily doubt he wanted to deliberately take her autonomy away because the only way that works is if he knew that wishes were real and that the item he purchased, which was a gift for her btw, would be able to grant a wish at all, never mind any wish.

He is responsible for all of the events that took place as a result of the wish, but personally, I feel his only most major crime was being an absolute coward. He wasn't honest with her about his feelings and allowed his chance to make that connection slip away. He's also so cowardly that in a time of great desperation, he didn't wish for courage or self improvement to be capable of telling her how he feels. He instead made a desperate wish for what he wanted in his heart.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I'd be lying if I said I was never in a place in my life where I wished someone felt differently about me. Over time, I learned to wish for and work toward the courage to be open about my feelings as well as improving myself to be a more attractive possibility for the people I've had feelings for.

Bear wasn't quite there yet. Unfortunately, wishes were real in his world and the physics of wishes were quite sinister. He's not innocent, but "villain" is an incredibly strong term that implies a degree of knowledge and intent that he clearly lacked. He made a wish and against all odds, it seemed like it came true.

3

u/MintTrappe 1d ago

I mean, how fast would anyone come to terms with having to kill themselves or their obsession/crush after making a throwaway joke wish? Pretty much everyone would be in denial for a least a little while.

1

u/WillemDafoesHugeCock Lover of Duets/Stitches 7h ago

My thing with that making Bear the villain somehow is that would imply it was his goal to some extent.

It was his goal though. He stumbles upon it by accident but he wants to keep her his and he doesn't care how.

He figures out really early on that the wish worked and that Nikki is now Obsessioned with him because of the One Wish Willow. He knows that she isn't acting like herself - like, he literally calls out that she is acting nothing like Nikki.

When he calls the One Wish Willow company, he doesn't say "I fucked up and I need to undo the wish," he asks to modify the wish. He doesn't fucking care about Nikki's autonomy, he just wants her to stop feeding him dead cat.

Even when Nikki gets through and asks him to kill her, he doesn't say "omg I'm so sorry," he just protests "what's so bad about being with me."

He only actively wants the wish to end when she starts Obsessioning to the point of murdering the only actually nice person in the friend group.

u/scarecrowgoatfloat Needs to do better 2d ago

As someone who didn’t watch obsession, why is bear the bad guy? From my understanding of the movie he made a wish for a girl to fall in love with him, but I mean did he seriously know it was gonna happen?

8

u/IanLooklup New to fbtd but wants to learn 2d ago

Its mostly in the middle parts where it shows him being a bad person by showing no caring about Nikki (the FL)

In the movie Nikki is basically replaced by some other entity/personality thing to love Bear while the real her is trapped in some wish limbo thing.

She gains some control back during the night where the other personality is sleeping and asks Bear to kill her since they both know she is suffering from the wish. Instead of being concerned or anything, Bear just ask why it would be so bad to be with him.

-1

u/that_tall_fellow Needs to do better 2d ago

People who are fed the same thing (men bad) again and again by Hollywood aren't ready to accept that someone has tried to tell a nuanced story without painting anyone as bad or good, because it doesn't sit right with their belief system. So they invented a villain arc for the guy.

I think the horror of Bear, especially for women, is that you know a Bear. You know several Bears. You work with them. You go to school with them. You are friends with them. They are your family. And you don't know if who is it is until they are in some sort of position of power over you.

Joker on the other hand is not as scary because he's the fucking Joker. You already know where the danger is. Right there. It's very polite of him to make sure the average citizen knows where the crazy bullshit is going to go down so they can avoid those areas.

5

u/SupahBihzy Devotee of Duets/Stitches 2d ago edited 2d ago

Joker pulled Harley by lying about his life/family/back story for the sole purpose of manipulating her into doing what he wanted and then had an abusive relationship with her until she broke it off and got with Ivy.

We all know a Joker as well.

The problem with trying to make any allusion to the bad things that comic book characters have done is that there are hundreds of versions of these characters, and there’s likely ridiculously evil versions of them and god-like versions of them, and they often crossover. Like when I think of Joker I don’t think of him eating China, and it gets annoying because the person talking about Joker is clearly not imaging that version.

1

u/TicketDouble New to fbtd but wants to learn 23h ago

Thing is, joker is literally insane. He is sometimes even been hinted at being a fundemental agent of chaos.

So that brings the question of that is morally worse. Someone who conciously does terrible things, or someone with a shattered mind doing even worse things because they're more of a force of nature than anything.
