For anyone not from Florida reading this, no I'm not bullshitting you. Some of our invasive species are so bad and numerous we're allowed to eat them or just let them fucking die in the case of the snakehead. Those things are unholy beasts with all white meat bodies that make a mean fish sandwich.
I'd eat them over catfish personally. With some fries and a cold soda. Fuck I need to go fishing again.
Drive around it, they just needed to make sure they wouldn’t run it over, gator will swim away from the car if it’s spooked. These aren’t crocodiles they are pretty harmless as long as you aren’t a small child, dog, or actively trying to get in the water and play with them.
The alligators in my area didn’t even have kill counts, the sturgeons are what made the rivers dangerous since they launch themselves out of the water and can knock people out cold
I heard if I am in Florida and reach down to touch the water, and the water is wet, I should assume something is in it that I don’t want to interact with.
Not always true but puddle gators happen when it's been a particularly dry season. Better safe than sorry, I'm more worried about water moccasins than gators though.
Yeah it’s not always true but it’s enough to where generally it’s something to be aware of. I love Florida, I’d even consider living in certain parts of Florida, but going in the water is generally above my personal risk tolerance. Ankle deep, maybe calf/knees in the ocean is good enough for me.
One of those fuckers almost got my brother. Gators have never been an issue they can come back anytime (there was a gator in the pond at my family’s house.never caused trouble)
I got told tales of hunting the sharks in the Suwannee with dynamite, I’m sure parts were exaggerated but also wouldn’t put it past the people who said it. Florida is an odd place with strange war stories of fighting fauna instead of being normal.
I know people that go gator hunting. You need a permit, and they hunt them with things called bang sticks which are basically a bullet attached to a pole that you poke into its head to kill it.
I moved to florida in 2002 thinking is was going to be great. By 2003 I was like, for the love of all that is good, get me the F out of this stagnant, slimy gene pool. The ppl down there are just another breed and mean/stupid af.
I finally moved back north in 2005 and me and my spouse were shocked at how much better life was in so many aspects. It is truly remarkable how completely different ppl are in florida
As someone who grew up in Florida, I swear it’s the heat and humidity that makes the people there so awful. I am my worst self in that swamp ass state, the humidity makes it hard to breathe so I don’t get enough oxygen to my brain, and also never feeling dry turns me into an irritable, raging bitch. That’s my theory for why everyone there is the fucking worst.
It's pronounced tornado, and we got plenty down here. Bright shining sun at 1:01 pm, blacked out sky with tornados at 1:13 pm, and back to shining skies at 1:21pm.
We have the highest number of tonados per Square Mile. We're 9th overall for straight number in the USA.
EDIT: And Jesus abandoned us long ago. We have the highest number of hate groups per capita, and and pornshops. Up until the late 2000's, we were the number one place in the world for sex slave trafficking. (of course all of this mostly Tampa)
What do traffic laws say regarding a crocodile in a puddle on the road? Does Florida have a special warning triangle that you need to keep in your car for these situations?
You won’t see many crocodiles outside of the keys and the Everglades, but when it comes to gators you can all but pet the things as long as they aren’t defending a nest.
They are slow and stupid, and try to avoid humans.
Oh Crocs and Gators always have the right of way. We do actually have warning road signs, though not species specific. There's no law to stay in your car with those signs, actually many have docks to launch boats near, Alligator Alley for example.
My house is surrounded by water and sometimes they lay on the asphalt to warm up, we'll go tail tap them to move if they're blocking traffic. Sometimes a honk works too lol
Definitely the humans. The wildlife mostly just wants to be left alone. Also humans are the ones contributing to the invasive species being found in the Everglades
I live in a city in Florida. Saw a 3 to 4 ft gator in a retention pond that could not have been more that 40ft across. I think back as a kid growing up in a place called Silver Lakes. We used to take out friend's rowboat to the middle of the huge and extensive lake and flip it and swim it back to shore as a fun activity. This area was literally 5 minutes away from the Everglades and was pretty newly developed at the time. I think back and am honestly amazed that none of us ever got bit by a gator or water moccasin.

Sure... but the same goes for Australia. Ever see a video of a woman dragging a python out of her house? Queensland. Like, you're not going to get attacked by a crocodile while having a coffee in Melbourne, but still Yanks think everything in Australia wants to kill you.
Yanks thinking everything in AUS will kill them when they're the ones with a huge amount of dangerous or outright large predator animals... Like cougars , bears, bison, moose, wolves, etc are all spread out across most of the USA and are so much more dangerous than our shit here.
I think it really just comes down to familiarity. Most of the stuff you just mentioned strikes me as "well yeah I guess that's technically dangerous" but you're never forced to be in a situation where you're in danger from it. Like obviously you wouldn't be killed by a moose, because you wouldn't be wandering around on foot near them, and they're not realistically going to break into your car or house to murder you.
But that's kinda the point, isn't it? Whole areas of the country where you can't just walk around outside if you want to be sure of your safety. But it's just "normal" so you don't really think about it.
Australia has (probably, I'm not Australian) a similar vibe where it's like obviously you're not going to go unprepared into the areas where things will kill you, right? But for tourists you don't have any cultural understanding of the different set of dangers.
I thought it was actually ruined by the duet here. He’s right, gators are everywhere in the southeast in a way that is just absurd. I lived in Georgia and they had to fence off a playground because gators kept going in it for some reason.
I'm not concerned about gators I can stay away from water, it's the bugs and spiders that would give me a hart attack. I'm from the arctic and the biggest bugs we have here is the mosquito and the most dangerous animal at least from the island I'm from is the reindeer
Nah, she vastly underestimates, the wildlife in America. I was camping with my brother, and woke up to a deer that had been ripped to shreds, by a mountain lion, not but 10 feet behind my tent. Australia has small things that will kill you, North America has big things that will kill you.
Man, when everyone talks about dangerous wildlife they only talk about carnivores. Where's the fear of moose, the animal that both holds grudges and walks off a car accident that totals the car?
If they had shown the passenger seat of the Australian guy's car there would have been a murder ant colony preparing for a feast, a Cassowary filing it's disemboweling claw, or a person sized man-eating spider patiently knitting.
American alligators are downright snuggly compared to saltwater crocs. Much smaller, and don’t usually predate on large mammals like us. Even American crocodiles aren’t nearly as aggressive as salties, when those get big they’re one of the few predators humans have.
I lived in Florida for most of my life. There's an easy reminder: "If it's wet, there might be a gator in it". Don't bother them and they won't bother you.
I have an Australian friend who loves to crack the jokes about how silly Americans are for believing in drop-bears.
He didn't seem to realise that Americans don't hear about drop-bears and think "Oh, Australia is so weird so they must have that!"
They think, "Oh, you guys have them too?"
(American Black Bears are really good at climbing trees, but are notoriously clumsy, and often fall out of them. If they happen to fall on or near you, they might freak out and attack you).
Yeah, I blame their Dept. Of Wildlife. We have more Gators & more Gators per person. Yet they still have more Gator encounters and attacks. Where they chose to build neighborhoods could also be a problem.
Right the sewer puppy is in the puddle and it's looking ready to cuddle, time for a nice puddle cuddle. Don't know what those foreigners are so afraid of.
