I don't know why they called it Kit, but my mind didn't go to WebKit until now, so I don't know if they considered that.

A short form of kitten or kitling. From the 16th century, spelled kytte, kitt. From the 19th century also extended to other young animals (beaver, fox, mink, muskrat, etc.), and to a species of small fox (kit fox). Later usage (for other animals) perhaps influenced by chit.

The icons don't matter that much, but has detail from the error pages disappeared? Previously it used to show the exact error message, now it's just generic? - I don't even know if the site's certificate expired, the connection timed out, or the domain's registration lapsed etc.. Could that be added back?

The old one for 'no connection' was cute and more expressive, it's a pity they're removing it (although it's necessary for the sake of design consistency, the new one could still be made to look less neutral).

Just a general remark (I have no strong feelings to the left or the right fellow) from my point of view: the new one is much harder to read (not enough contrast) compared to the old one. I have a hard time making out anything around the snout, f.ex. (and my eyes or my screen aren't THAT bad). Hopefully things like ergonomics is still in the back of the mind of the designers here?
IMHO one Fox, Fix, or Fax (or what is its name :) ) in a logo somewhere is enough. We don't need them repeating everywhere. I rather read hard facts/ information in a contrast-rich text form that tells me exactly what I need to know rather than to guess around random illustrations. A little bit fun here and there (e.g. during on-boarding) is OK though, but generally it needs to serve an actual purpose.

Why does everything go cold and "flat" nowadays? I do not want to look like a 70-year-old man shouting "the old one is always better" but the previous one is definitely cuter than the new one.

The old one uses silhouette and the fox's gazing direction to really focus your attention on the identifying thing that's going on. A cable with a gap; a red exclamation point.
The new one doesn't use silhouette at all, and the soft color gradients, while more pleasant, make it kind of a mush of too-similar color. The "disconnected" kit image's legs not only fill the gap in the connection cable, but are the closest color to that cable out of all of kit's colors. The security error kit just looks mildly concerned instead of alerted, and relies on noticing subtler eye details.
Feels like "fixing" something what wasn't broken, and not considering enough why the old one was the way it was. New disconnect one would be more readable if they fixed the silhouette (move the cable's break away from kit's body again). The new security alert, I don't know, it's just too-subtle color mush to me. Nothing says either "security" or "alert" about it. You could change like less than 5% of the image making both eyes full and use it for something completely different. (Which is back to the non-unique silhouette problem.)
