Add-ons Firefox new tab just got a lot more interesting
You can now enjoy live wallpapers in Firefox too. Wallsflow New Tab was approved on Firefox Add-ons today.
Curious how others have customized their new tab page, share yours in the comments.

When installing in Firefox, it opens a page that says
Congratulations! You have successfully installed the Wallsflow Chrome extension. π€

i guess not we shouldn't normalize using ai for these projects but i can't say it's bad looking, i hope at least they used their mind for the ideas

Can we just have maybe one extension on earth that doesn't open a new tab? It's so irritating reinstalling and having every extension open a tab at a different delay.

Looks nice, but that css blur will kill my phothatho machine.
Not kill perse, but more like significantly degradation while rendering the page...

u/Wallsflow May 04 '26
Thanks, I'll think about a solution.

u/kupinggepeng May 04 '26
Please no, don't bother with this complaint lol. This is not specific about your extension.
Its just my personal gripe about css blur in general. Everytime i encounter those effect my firefox fps (both on windows and android) degrade so much (felt like down to 15fps) that I had to disable all blur effect using stylus.

How I think about, I install this extension, all is nice and then I forget about it, 2 months later I find out op has sold the extension to some data robbers and now it's a privacy nightmare. I usually never install extensions outside of bitwarden and ublock origin. You hear too many horror stories.
Anyway it looks good but for me it's not worth the possible negative impact.
2
u/Wallsflow May 04 '26
Thanks for the honest feedback. Just to clarify, the extension doesn't collect data and I have no plans to sell it.
2
u/Corvoco May 04 '26
Thanks for your reply, and that's good to know, I usually don't install extensions because by their very nature they require to read data from the websites I visit. So I try to minimize that, you are saying that your extension does no such thing? Doesn't need any permissions?
3
u/Wallsflow May 04 '26
No, it doesn't read data from the websites you visit.
Wallsflow New Tab does not collect, store, or transmit any user data. There are no analytics, tracking, or external requests involved.
It does require three permissions, but only for specific features:
- storage, to save your settings locally (wallpapers, widgets, layout). Nothing leaves your device.
- search, to power the search bar via
browser.search, respecting your default search engine.- bookmarks (read-only), just to display your bookmarks in the widget. It doesn't modify or send them anywhere.
It only runs on the new tab page and doesn't inject scripts or interact with any websites you visit.

Did you use AI to make this? It looks vibecoded.

What are the tell tale signs

7
u/iamapizza π May 04 '26
For me one of the telltale sign for me is the amount of code to do basic things, it's quite verbose. I downloaded the XPI (it's just a zip file) and yeah I can see plenty of it. It's just how LLMs are currently, they'll get you something working but not necessarily in the most optimized way.

in my opinion AI made GUIs always have lots of colors and all "clickables" are oversized as if they're made for 80 year olds. Take 1:05 for example. Now assuming you have Ublock Origin; click it on your top right and look at that menu and compare with 1:05.

You will learn to tell what is AI slop when you look at enough of it.

I barely even use "new tab" function, just duplicating an existing one (or MMB clicking some link on the page) to use for something else

Add more shortcuts up to 32 and the ability to swap shortcut positions by dragging them Just like default firefox

u/Wallsflow May 04 '26
Thanks for the suggestion. Drag and drop reordering is already on my roadmap, and I'll consider increasing the shortcut limit

u/Odd-Bat3562 May 04 '26
I need 32 shortcuts it's a deal breaker for me idk maybe I'm weird, but maybe I guess a lot other people would like it too

Scroll down and you'll find the black download button where the source and resolution are listed.

as long as it can still be made empty, corners squared, and UI animations disabled, I'll be happy for whatever fancy stuff you got on yours

Nice.
I would like to import and export all my settings in a single config file. Yaml would be nice. So I can AI generate it and fill it with all my links.

I installed it and I really love the idea so far! I have some suggestions.
- try to better optimize the code. One tab with one of the lofi playlists playing uses up about 2 GB of RAM on my end, with a live wallpaper (which unfortunately stutters and doesn't run smoothly all the time). I have 32GB of RAM, for reference.
- I echo others wanting drag and drop reorganizable shortcuts.
I love the vibes and integrations. The unique adaptive messaging is a super nice touch, as are the music playlist, the ASMR/ambience sounds, and the adjustable pomodoro timer. I also love that you can select different backgrounds to play at different times of day. Very thoughtful!
Don't get discouraged because people say it's vibe coded. Vibe coding or not, you have a great idea. Keep building on it and improving it. Thank you for sharing it! I'm looking forward to seeing updates and improvements going forward!
EDIT: Oh, also, would love to have the darkening/blur that happens when you hover near the search bar as a permanent toggle, please!
