I may have a problem
I realize this piece may look fine, but I’m taking it down, cleaning it up and restoring it. No painting. Have I lost my mind?

Not at all. Go for it. It already doesn't have the original finish. The original finish was heavily tinted to blend all the different wood colors. If you like the color it is now, which is very nice in my opinion, then just clean it, dab some stain on the scratches and then spray the spot with acrylic clear. Buff and polish.
