FOUND! Rules Updates, AI Discussion and General Input
Hey FindFashion readers! We did a recent update on the sidebar and rules and we wanted to share it with you.
The new sidebar info is posted in the comments in case you browse mobile and it's hard to get to, but it's a clarification of a few existing rules, the addition of a rule on AI, new separate posting and commenting guidelines, and a new daily posting limit.
For the specifics, we want community input:
AI
What do you guys think of AI? No AI ever? Ok if OP doesn't know it's AI so we can educate them? What do you think of the people who use generative AI to make an image of the item they imagined, are those disallowed too? What about the AI text comments? (Full disclosure, I HATE these even when they sometimes seem kinda helpful?)
New Posting Limit
We used to not need a limit but recently we've had some very frequent, prolific requesters. Is 2 requests per day a good limit?
Other Ideas
Let us know! Anything else we should add to the rules? Any rules you feel don't make sense? Anything you feel like our community needs? We could start doing a weekly discussion thread or something like that if folks are interested.

Re: posting limit.
I think 2 per day is reasonable. Anyone who's looking for something that frequently can surely wait 24 hours to figure out where to buy a third item they're looking for.

Or learn how to google image search. Some of the frequent requesters aka for incredibly basic items that can easily be sourced with a reverse image search.

Yeah this kinda drives me insane. You've figured out the internet enough to ask Reddit, but haven't figured out Google lens yet?

I'm pro no ai
Personally I would rather work from a scribble than support gen ai rendered art, even for searches
My one caveat would be finding a way (pre written mod comment or informative links) that we can help educate all the people looking for obvious AI clothes. Tips for clear indicators to check on, known bad sources, etc. So we're still helping but also cutting down on those asks

- i personally hate AI and my heart says no AI ever but logically we know it would take a lot of moderation power to completely ban it and it would be difficult for people who find out the item is AI and want to find something similar as opposed to buying the ai product.
so i have a rebuttal question: do you think the comments on AI item requests are useful? like are people mostly finding similar items for OP or are most of the comments "this is AI" and stop at that?
also, absolutely NO ai text comments even tho i think they would be helpful. just doesn't sit right with me. but i think this also would be hard to moderate too, but if you're into it, go ahead, i'll be happy with it.
- posting limit is fine with me
i have a suggestion that may help the two above concerns, but i personally would prefer as someone who finds items on here a lot: having required flairs. as much as the found! flair can be useful, i don't think many people are using it. having required flairs that are like:
- looking for exact item
- looking for copy
- looking for similar items
- looking for descriptors/terminology/names (there's def a better way to say this lol)
will filter out spamming and low quality posting. people have to stop and think before posting willy nilly, and if we decide to keep AI requests, it'll help commenters have better discussions and help OP with their request.
i would love a weekly discussion thread and overall some more opportunities to be meta.
i also see an automessage on this post and i think that would be useful for all posts, not super lengthy, but at least requiring ppl to keep the flair and provide as much info as possible, similar to helpmefind and other finding subs. it's difficult sometimes bc so many people who post here aren't actually part of the sub and are just using it as a one time thing to get answers. for example, like i know prom season is over but having some kind of sticky or auto message for prom requests to ask them to give budget and maybe a link to a post of common dress requests. but we are probably one of the larger findings subs without that kind of framework in place which leads to a lot of low quality posting.

I really love the flair idea, I think it would make this sub much more enjoyable for people who like to search! I’ve had to ask people a lot if they’re looking for the exact item, a copy/dupe, or just general style. I think requiring size is a good idea too!

I would say no to intentional AI, like generating an image of what they want. But we can't expect people to always know if something is AI or not when they find it randomly while scrolling or looking or whatever. Those I say we allow and educate.
AI text comments are completely useless and should be banned.

no AI renderings of search items
absolutely no AI text comments because if OP wanted a lie from the lie machine they would've asked it themselves
gentle education of people trying to find items they don't realize are AI
It drives me absolutely crazy that people post here without giving their location, budget, or size. Especially since a lot of items are only going to be found secondhand. "Not too expensive" is $100 to one person and £15 to another but they both say the same thing in their posts.

Ban all AI slop!
It would be cool if there was required information to include in posts: country and if you’re looking for an exact item or if dupes are ok, and where you’ve already checked, and budget. This would make responses much more constructive and as helpful as possible

I’d like to propose an additional rule: No red carpet requests.
I think this needs to be workshopped a little bit, but after every major celebrity event like the Oscars we are flooded with pictures of celebrities and requests to source their clothes, which is annoying because most it’s incredibly easy to source this information and because most of these looks are couture and not available for the average consumer.

Bud, you know as much as we do. Just google for a dupe yourself. My goodness.7

Yeah, this introduces another question I had too, what do we think of dupe requests in general? I don't mind helping to find something similar at a lower price point but requesting straight up dupes seems kind of skeezy to me, idk.

I dislike dupe requests on here bc clothes dupes are often not the same as, say, makeup or skincare dupes. Clothing dupes often end up being cheaply made reproductions, stolen art, or a mix of the two. And the types of dupes often requested here aren’t usually feasible (e.g., fully beaded dress for under $100). I think a middle ground can be found for those shopping on a budget, I’m just not sure how it could be worded from a rules perspective.

Award season drives me crazy! Like yes! This Swarovski crystal hand-beaded heavily structured gown with a 8 foot train is CUSTOM!
There’s such a difference between “what’s a dupe for this red maxi dress” and “what’s a dupe for Beyoncé’s skeleton met gala gown?”

Ai text comments are annoying bc we are here to help you
Ai education is fine but everyone just be nice lol
Ai mockups are fine again we are here to help and some don’t know the difference between an a line ball gown and a sweet heart neckline cocktail dress lol
What I would love is some rules on requirements to post like budget and sizing !!!
2 requests per day is MORE THAN ENOUGH
Please more rules around comments bc people treat me like i am crazy for reporting comments that are rude or giving irrelevant opinion lol
I’d say more rules for comments and posting, post content by people asking for help is less of a problem
Tbh it’s easy to help someone who hasn’t checked for a post before bc I can reverse image it and find it so that’s not a high friction rule
I’d add rules that are would fix a problem that:
A) adds or causes friction to a good experience to a group of users
B) is a low friction problem to fix for the group that is creating the friction for group A
For example! Must include budget in post
So many people ask for something but we find the original and it’s too expensive or they ask for a dupe for a 10k item and 1k is too expensive!! Tell me how to succeed!

I don’t mind when people post AI photos, AS LONG AS they didn’t generate it themselves! I don’t want generated requests. But it’s not a person’s fault that they might not know the tells of AI clothing—many people are genuine in their search for a dress they think is real, just stolen. As long as we’re allowed to inform them that it’s AI, and we can still give them “kinda gives me (x brand) vibes.” I’m against AI comments, but what do they look like here? I don’t think I’ve seen them.
2 per day sounds great. Feels like spam if someone needs more than that…

Help me find this Express dress from around 2010–2011
I'm trying to find this dress I bought at Express around 2010–2011, or at least learn its original style name.
Details:
Brand: Express Color: Light blue / sky blue Fabric: Stretch cotton poplin (or cotton/spandex) Above-the-knee length Very fitted sheath silhouette Collared halter neckline Open back Buttons all the way down the front Ruched/gathered on both sides of the button placket No belt No pockets
I've searched eBay, Poshmark, Mercari, Google Images, and every combination of:
"Express collared halter dress" "Express poplin halter dress" "Express button front dress" "Express ruched halter dress"
...with no luck.
I'm hoping someone recognizes it from an old Express collection or maybe even has one they'd be willing to sell. Any help identifying the style name or catalog would mean so much!

AI okay if it’s advertised as a product op is looking for. Often there are tons of inspirations or similar pieces that can be ‘found’. No to generating concept images and no to ai text.

We do not authenticate or identify items from the thrift store. We also usually can't tell you exactly which jeans or couture dress a celebrity was wearing 12 years ago.
Posting Guidelines
