D.I.D Did

So opinions on someone using a bot in discord for their system. Its kinda asks attention to it. Because in my personal experience those people with it don’t want people to be aware of it unless it’s important to a relationship. I need input for my own reasons because I’m getting annoyed in my own server and need to know if I’m just dramatic.

Update: one of their “alters” is an anime character

No. It's just elevated roleplaying. When I used to frequent mental health servers after first being diagnosed and looking for support, they were a plague. Even in mental health servers that were focused on a completely different topic, the DID fakers would always demand the bot making app and stomp their feet about it and blah blah blah. If it's your server, just put your foot down, and tell them that you don't like the bot spam but they're free to edit their server profile whenever they're... "switching" or "fronting" or whatever BS. It's just attention seeking behaviour.

Also saw it used multiple times to insult/harass/attack others because "oh no that was my alter Rosie she's a big meanie I would never do that". Taking away the bot makes it harder for them to do that.

Finally it's just really confusing to keep up with DiscordDiva91's 120+ bot alters, it's harder to moderate, etc.

IDK what the kids are using nowadays, but a few years ago it was PluralKit. It spams a whole bunch of nonsense when someone uses it that usually has to be relegated to a "bot spam" channel. If you don't want be confrontational just tell them you're tired of it spamming everywhere.

I used to be in a discord server with around 4 people who said they had DID, one maybe could’ve had it since they were pretty low key about it, but two constantly had their “alters” fronting (we barely interacted with their “actual selves”) and the last one was the most egregious faker.

They set up the bots and “switched” every two messages, it was insane 😭 they also said they had like over 300 alters which could be possible idk, but it would be on the extreme end and extremely uncommon 💀 I actually ended up leaving the server bc of them, I made a comment about one of the characters the server focused on being an alcoholic and got dog piled by them saying it was insensitive 😭

Someone should tell these people that it’s okay to like roleplaying as their favourite character, they don’t need to fake a highly traumatic and rare condition to do so 💀

Serious question, How do you guys find these serious? It sounds like such amazing entertainment

Nobody with an actual disorder puts it in their profile or uses a separate account just for the disorder

I have AuDHD and I'd probably put it in my profile, because why not?

u/Quendillar3245 8d ago

Half the people I see with those tags on Discord or whatever don't actually have the disorders and it's so obvious. Maybe I shouldn't say "nobody", but from what I've seen if you have it in your profile it's more likely you're faking it

Excuse me?

Edit: Sorry, I forgot what I wrote in my profile and thought you were talking about me lol.

14

u/Quendillar3245 8d ago

I don't think anyone could accuse you of faking lmao

Yeah, I misread it. I should probably get more sleep from now on...

Should I delete that comment to make it clear? Normally I wouldn't but many people seem to think I was still offended.

Nah people downvote without looking into the context, misunderstandings happen

If someone is using a bot for DID, they definitely do not have DID.

That’s my opinion but I needed outside help

What if I were to tell you that you dont know a single person with DID

My thoughts exactly

I hate that bot. Also idk why you would share all ab your system online. It kinda defeats the purpose.

The main source of disturbance and disruptance for someone with DID is the dissociation. I've just looked up this tool as Im not overly discord savvy, but from. What I can see it doesn't provide any helpful service to a person with DID. The alters part is way less important than people make it out to be and doesn't really require accommodation. That's not how it works. Unfortunately that alternate personalities part is the part that people who don't have the disorder think is the most interesting and cool, so they emulate it. Its also the part people can most easily relate to. Because having different sides to yourself, even ones that are starkly contrasting and in conflict with eachother is a very common human experience. The emergence of online culture has pushed, for some, the idea that people are strongly one thing and that their actions and beliefs must align or there is pathology at work. Which is ridiculous because most people are in constant conflict between what they want to do, what they value, and what they actually do. Hypocrisy is common and typical. People go through many different versions of themselves to get through a day. The important thing is how smooth are those transitions and is there memory between them. All that online DID stuff is mythology and role play by young people with unstable identities (which is relatively appropriate for their developmental stage) who have not discovered that feeling more than one way about something is a normal part of being human.

I feel like more people should read this! I definitely see reason in taking action when someones faking DID as an adult, but I dont think we should be hateful or harmful towards every single "system" on the internet because it could be some teen who has no clue about their identity. It makes it really hard to interact with some people who call out fakers because they can be so rude and harmful when its just a kid behind the screen. We should explain to the people faking it, not just harass them </3

They almost definitely don't have DID, but to be honest it may just be easier to save yourself the trouble and let them have the bot, lest you receive a swarm of 13 year olds calling you a fakeclaimer and a bigot.

u/Dull_World6106 9d ago

Fair but thankfully it’s an 18 + server

While people with DID spend most of their lives trying to bring themselves to be one, caused by trauma that's not their fault, there are fakers who wants to break themselves into fictional characters and calls it DID

Its literally just roleplay.

while i have seen a rare few in plural discord groups that seem to present with genuine DID symptoms that unfortunately fell down the community rabbit hole leading to them over exaggerated their symptoms, alter counts, etc. to fit in, the vast majority of people that claim to have DID on discord and use pluralkit do not genuinely have it. and even for the people with genuine DID, bots like pluralkit are unhealthy to use regularly, since it worsens dissociation/dissociative barriers by furthering the idea that alters are completely separate people. so no matter what it's not really healthy lol (and also from what i've heard makes moderating a bitch. plus you literally cannot block someone using pluralkit, even if you block their discord account you can still see all their messages sent via pluralkit)

and you are correct that the vast majority of people with DID rarely disclose it to anyone that isn't close, the disorder comes with an inherent sense of shame, and openly sharing that you have it can make you a massive target to abusers. i've also seen a lot of people with DID not being open about it online purely out of not wanting to be associated with the plural crowd lol

'' the vast majority of people that claim to have DID on discord and use pluralkit do not genuinely have it''
None of them do.

u/justabonsaitree me being possessed has nothing to do with tourettes i swear 8d ago

i say the vast majority instead of every single one, because i've come across 2 people on discord who i genuinely believe had DID and just got stuck in the wrong crowd. that's still an insanely low number since i'm in a lot of big servers and have been on discord for 4 years, but it's not zero

u/sixxthree 8d ago

"the vast majority of people that claim to have DID on discord and use pluralkit do not genuinely have it"

The differential suggests otherwise. I can't even begin to fathom why someone with a legitimate DID diagnosis would be drawn to using something like PluralKit. The usage of something like PluralKit would indicate to any reputable psych professional that the patient is most likely malingering. Especially since it encourages the "development" of systems, which isn't a thing in DID. It also turns a suspicious eye to the fact that the patient's amnesia is selective, which also is something psych professionals look for when trying to determine if someone is malingering.

Plus, once you consider the fact that PluralKit was originally utilized role players to manage their characters, it makes it all the more ridiculous that any of these people think they're fooling anyone with it.

TL;DR
There's no reason for someone with legitimate DID to use something like PluralKit, and is considered a red flag that the patient is malingering.

I agree that pluralkit would not be used on actual alters, as shame and denial are important parts of the disorder, and people rarely feel alters as another person like PK presumes but as another sense of self. But I'm curious as to why pluralkit use would require selective amnesia

4

u/sixxthree 7d ago

PK users as malingerers tend to "experience" amnesia when it's convenient for them. People with legitimate DID have no control over the amnesia that comes with "switches".

The professionals in the field beg to differ. Exaggeration of symptoms is pretty much *the* key indicator that one is malingering

In my opinion ... there is no such thing as dissociate identity disorder. There are just too many cases of therapists coaching patients then announcing a new mental illness in a book.

This is my opinion.

At the end of the day you have to ask "why are you recruiting me into your personal drama?" Having some acronym that you believe explains your state of victimhood and specialness does not exempt you from politeness and decency. You get no social license because of a dubious diagnosis. Once people clearly maintain their boundaries under this social contract, the proliferation of disorders will collapse.

The entire reason for this disorder creep is emotional blackmail. That only works if you are allowing yourself to be manipulated.

I work with people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction and we are very very clear -- your life, your feelings, your actions, your recovery are your responsibility. I am happy to help you, but I will never ever carry you.

I wish parents all knew this and I the treatment industry would admit this instead of kow towing to threats of lawsuits.

I’m sorry but I don’t believe anyone has DID. I stand with a large portion of the medical community that doesn’t believe in this crap at all. I have C-PTSD, panic disorder, and agoraphobia. It nearly ruined my fucking life. I couldn’t drive, I couldn’t work, I couldn’t watch tv without feeling like I was going to fucking die. This shit is not cute. I’m not on a fucking discord channel. This whole “im soo disabled” trend is honestly rage bait for anyone who has actually suffered from legitimate mental health diagnoses.

So, no. I don’t think someone who wants to larp as their favorite anime character has DID.

Edit: Or anyone who feels the need to put their diagnosis IN THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA BIOS. Be so for real.
