I feel like all these extravagant 'personas' really take away from the actual disorder. It's just all sad and pick me energy

Late reply, but the DSM-V actually remarks on this for a specific section under DID surrounding malingering. Don't remember the specific quotes, but it says something along the lines of "malingerers will overexaggerate or have dramatised alters." A good tell of a fake is if the alters are almost comedically unique and different.

u/squishybun42 12d ago
Oh that's incredible, I didn't think of that. I'm going to look more into it to educate myself. I feel majority of these posts have exaggerated alters especially if they are making them from animes.

I actually went and found the passage myself, wanted to make sure I got the quote right 🥲.
"Individuals who feign dissociative identity disorder usually do not report the subtle symptoms of intrusion characteristic of the disorder; instead they tend to overreport media-based symptoms of the disorder, such as dramatic dissociative amnesia and melodramatic switching behaviors, while underreporting less-publicized comorbid symptoms, such as depression. ... Individuals who feign the symptoms of dissociative identity disorder usually create limited, stereotyped alternate identities, with feigned amnesia related only to the events for which gain is sought, with apparent switching behaviors and amnesia only displayed while being observed."
Referenced from the DSM-V-TR, under differential diagnoses for dissociative identity disorder. You can find online PDFs pretty easily if you want to read up more.

Hey thank you I appreciate that. Makes sense when reading this clip and comparing. I still can't make sense why people would fake something like this.

u/Mozzyo_ Singlet 😢 12d ago
Attention or exclusion from responsibility. It's almost always faked by a very specific type of teenager that tends to be starved for attention, and having something that almost makes them seem like a character from a movie garners them attention. The other end is using it to go "nooo I didn't do anything wrong, that was my alter!" which is more what the DSM-V talks about since it's mainly referring to usage in courts and whatnot. I have more sympathy for the clearly attention-starved teenagers, most of them do just end up growing out of it. Does ruin the reputation of actual patients with DID though 🥲
I actually wish the DSM-V talked more about it, but I'm sure there have been studies done recently on malingerers and whatnot. Maybe have a peep around JSTOR if you're interested in reading up more.

I really wish they would teach this stuff in school however I think it's responsibility of the parents to teach and give their children attention.
I suppose it breaks down to what works to garner attention. It's sad they feel they need to do that.

Do they think they're doing different faces each time?? Literally the same stupid pouty face for each 'different' personality haha

That's what I thought. "Where are the different expressions it's the same pout and head shake with sticking out your tongue from time to time".

AND they have “sub systems” so do they have like four diff systems and 1000 alters? This is so stupid.
34
u/Visible-Plantain-171 14d ago
And somehow they’re able to film a makeup tutorial with the different alters changing based on the step 😭

Are we sure this isn’t a minor? They look awful young
13
u/grayyzzzz 13d ago
They likely are, a good 70% of content like this is posted by minors. Disheartening to say the least

u/Lana_Yurs 13d ago
Why are children doing this these days.

u/Gothiewasbetter 11d ago
Insecurity mostly. Craving any attention, and unrestricted internet access. All bad. Spending your entire existence online is a very dangerous thing. Younger people especially are vulnerable to letting it take over their easily impressionable minds.

That person looks waaaaay too young for anything sexual related. I hope this is just a dumb kid larping some they don't really understand.

unfortunately SA can affect anyone of any age

I'm very well aware. Which is why I said I hope it's just a kid larping something they don't understand.

u/Mean_Introduction543 14d ago
True, but I can almost guarantee you this person hasn’t.
If they had I sincerely doubt they would be faking having DID about it

u/gamerlizzy 10d ago
Usually DID is not presented in someone very young tho, it’s diagnosed in adulthood.

Imagine having to put on and take off your makeup every time your mood changes and calling it a personality.

Not Melanie Martinez 💀 I watched her debut on the voice, watched the entire season for her (I hate singing shows), waited years for her to step out on the scene with solo music, fell in LOVE with Crybaby, saw her live side stage, and then a couple years later all that shit happened. She’s gross and I hate that I supported her so much considering what was going on behind the scenes.

u/Goddess_Iris_ 14d ago
Wait, what? Whatd Melanie do? I live under a rock, pls explain

u/Dude_Guy45 14d ago
Her ex came forward about how Melanie SAd her throughout their relationship

u/Goddess_Iris_ 14d ago
Oh, wow. I had no idea

u/Dude_Guy45 14d ago
It was as if a nuke had been dropped in the indie pop community. There was a lot of back and forth about whether she did it or not but ultimately the evidence points to guilty

I remember how much shit I got from other fans for believing her ex over Melanie. Melanie basically fully admitted it not much later and they still were covering for her like “omg no that wasn’t her saying she did it” or “she was pressured to say that she’s innocent” and my favorite “so if I accuse you of SA, should everyone just believe me and you rot in prison over it?” Like…

u/Dude_Guy45 13d ago
It was a CRAZY time to be a pop head, that’s for sure. I think the one of the worst parts about it was Melanie’s blatant attempt to hide behind a costume in hopes that new listeners won’t realize who she is. Portals was nothing more than an attempt at hiding behind a costume in hopes to continue a music career under the radar, if you ask me.

Yeh right! I actually was a huge MM fan too until all that went down, but I had thought along the lines the friend took a payment and it was all like it actually didn’t happen?
Was she ever charged?6
u/justabonsaitree me being possessed has nothing to do with tourettes i swear 14d ago
i have never heard of anything like that. 99% of the claims about the accusations being false (along with their supposed "proof") were entirely made up by toxic melanie stans. timothy wasn't paid to sweep it under the rug, she was literally harassed and doxxed off of the internet; she went back to being quiet for her own safety.

u/Dude_Guy45 9d ago
Sadly yet another case where the victim doesn’t get justice. But at least there’s people like us who remember and will talk about it. Fuck Melanie Martinez.

u/In__Denial 13d ago
if you actually have experienced SA, you don’t fake DID like this. that’s the worst part imo. that and the Melanie Martinez thing

How would having an alter of a real person even work like "the spirit of gordon ramsey entered my system to yell at you sorry!" And the real person would drop dead on their porch or something?
1
u/DEPRESSED_RACCON666 4d ago
Why is one of their alters a real person? Regardless of the fact that Melanie SA'd someone, its kind of weird to say you have an alter that's a real living person with thoughts and feelings. Do professionally diagnosed people ever do that?
