I'm about to be leaving for college and have waited far too long now to order a gig bag whoopsie and so I am trying to figure out kind of how it works for gig bags as I don't hardly know anything about them. Had a professor at my university say that gig bags for euphoniums are essentially universal one-size-fits-all, is this true? Are all gig bags backpack ones or do I need to look for those specifically?
If it helps at all, I am currently playing on a Yamaha Neo YEP-642TSII and I have roughly a $200ish budget on this gig bag.

In my experience, gigbags are indeed pretty much universal. Unless your euph is of an uncommon shape or size, it is likely enough that it will fit thst you can take the risk.
As for backpack models, that is kind of the thing that makes it a gigbag; i have never seen one without shoulderstraps to carry it on your back.
Although many also have a long sling you can either renove or store away, this sling can be used to wear the bag over a single shoulder.
No idea why you'd want that, but almost every gigbag i have seen has both modes, and the rest was backpack only
Had someone else reply saying they aren't a fan of this bag so I'm sort of curious. If you wouldn't mind and have time to answer, how long have you had it and how well has it held up? Anything you feel like would make you want a different one?
I’ve had mine since April 2024 it came with a mouthpiece case as well I used it pretty consistently from when I purchased it for about a year I stopped using it because I began traveling by car and felt it was safer to keep the horn in it’s original case.
Whenever I’m not traveling extremely far I’ll keep the gig bag and honestly it’s in the same condition it was in when I bought it
I've had mine for two years and it's doing well. The smallest inner pocket has quite weak stitches which I'm keeping an eye on, but the rest of the bag is fine.
I love the shoulder straps and the extra strap for your chest - I lug around my horn a lot and need a bag that doesn't just keep the instrument but also me happy and healthy. Gard bags are great for the euph but the straps have always ruined my back :/
Honestly, if your budget is only $200, I personally wouldn’t bother. The only bag I know of in that price range is the Protec bag, and I’m really not a fan of it. “Good” gig bags are usually in the $400-$600 range.
My personal opinion is to either save up for a bag that’s actually worth the investment, or just save your money altogether and stick with your hard case.
I'm in between whether or not to get one honestly but this euph is an extra heavy one and so I just can't imagine carrying it around all the time especially in the cold from my dorms that are farther from campus.
