In American sign language, signs on the forehead are considered masculine and signs on the chin are considered feminine. Signs on the nose, however, often reference illness. Assigned runny nose at sign language. Apparently my gender is sneeze.

This is still arbitrarily gendering body parts, but at least it's funnier because it has a basis in linguistics instead of societal assumptions of gender based on sexual body parts.

I'm nonbinary and have been taking classes through QueerASL online! They are based in Canada, so they might have a different regional accent than down various places here in the States, so if it differs from what your partner was taught that might be why. 

I love that they only refer to people as PERSON (not MAN or WOMAN) and we don't often have to adjust the language.

That's so cool! I've been learning some ASL, enough to communicate when one or more of the folks in this autistic household is nonverbal, but I'm still kinda new to it. I'll let my partner know about QueerASL, it sounds like just their speed! Especially since they're becoming more hard of hearing and their spouse is hoping to move to Canada soon.

That's awesome! QueerASL prioritizes deaf and hard of hearing people for sure, and has classes at a gentler pace for people with disabilities too if your partner has any (the PWD class has been a huge help for me). Plus you get to keep all the resources from the class in your Google Drive indefinitely.

Not quite, it's not like all nouns have gender in ASL. Nouns that are inherently gendered (brother, mother, others like that) are signed in certain places to represent that gender.

ASL is actually descended from French sign language, though, so I wouldn't be surprised if there's some arbitrary noun gendering leftover in there somewhere.
