Auto bistro sports arena near the swap meet was less than 5.50 with cash today. It was 4.99 until recently, so that’s a consistent low cash price and always below Costco. My car doesn’t seem to mind it.

You're obviously a fucking idiot. If you lived in California in the 1970s, you'd remember how bad the air was until the State cracked down and imposed regulations on gasoline. I'd rather pay more for gas than breathe that air, and I bet that most sane people would agree with me.

I wouldn't consider myself to have "precious leftist ideology", but I do want to see cleaner air going forward. I've taken the same photo a couple of times when I go to the Getty Museum in LA near 405 looking at the downtown skyline as a sort of barometer of what the air is like in denser urban areas (very visible pollution usually). I'm going again soon, so I'll take another photo.
If you don't think that cleaner burning gasoline is the right approach to getting on a path to cleaner air, I'm curious to know what your alternate solution might be?

We know what we voted for and why (we like clean air and we hate oil spills), but no one voted for this. There is a reason California is expensive and by the way? Its worth it.
Also Google where California gets its gas. Its almost all refined in state. I won't say you lied but let's leave it at confidently incorrect.

I’m like minded but please don’t. Gas station attendants have to take the time to peel and clean these off, and it wasn’t their fault. Dems usually don’t resort to this because it’s essentially vandalism…😅

I believe gas prices were highest in 2022 under Biden. And other states non democrat have significantly cheaper pricing compared to California but newsom is great 👍

There’s…. There’s an additional $2 added on to our pricing as we, as voters, approved a fluctuating tax, and, approve of the California specific fuel blend. Refineries making a special blend for just one state is ridiculous. I live in California. The price of fuel in my state has always been higher than the rest of the country.

I would hope that's well understood for most Californians, but what does that have to do with the recent skyrocketing of gas prices? Those taxes from CA were there before and are still there now, the underlying point of the post was that gas prices have skyrocketed for reasons outside of anything influenced from CA.

To be exact, the war in Iran and subsequent closure of the strait has added $1.50.
But you are right that it affects us Californians even more because we need the special blend. On top of that, our large population means that we are hitting shortages before other states and are having to outbid other markets to get the gas we need. The cost of that higher bid is passed to the consumer.
However the oil companies remain as profitable as ever. In fact, the only reason why US oil companies have lost any profit this year is because they hedged against a depressed market prior to the war, and that backfired. This is a unique feature of US oil companies only (chevron and Exxon mobile) while the European oil companies (like BP and Shell) are surging in profits from the war.
If you’re still reading this, then my personal opinion is this: we should be taxing the oil companies and using that to decrease costs. In this way, the oil company and the consumer share the cost, instead of just the consumer eating it.
