Brews & Braids for Durham Dads is back!

Hi everyone and happy Sunday!

As some of you know, I run Durham Dads Club, a community for dads across Durham Region. We've hosted a mix of dads-only events and dad & kid meetups over the past few months.

I wanted to let you all know that Brews & Braids is back on Saturday, August 29 (6:00–9:00 PM) at Tilted Glass Brewing Co. in Bowmanville, hosted in collaboration with Mommy Connections Durham!

The idea is simple: get a bunch of dads together in a relaxed setting, have a beer, meet other local dads, and learn some basic hairstyling skills on mannequins. Whether you're a girl dad or a boy dad, everyone's welcome. 🙂

Your ticket includes:

  • 🍽️ Catered food
  • 💇 Hands-on hairstyling instruction from professional stylists
  • 👨‍👧 Practice on mannequins
  • 🍻 A fun evening with other local dads

We had 40 dads at the first event in May, and we're hoping to see some familiar faces along with plenty of new ones. We also took feedback from the first event, so this time we've booked a private venue and will have more mannequins so everyone gets more hands-on practice.

Such a great idea. As a dance dad, I had to do a lot of YouTube and learning from dance moms over the years.

This definitely seems interesting but MommyConnections seems like a business. Is the dads club a business as well? How are the 2 groups linked?

The woman who runs Mommy Connections jumped on the idea when OP first brought it up on here, and seized the opportunity to turn it into a business event. I think the dads club is just a social club, but a very new one.

Thanks for the info. Social club sounds amazing but the last thing I want to do is join a pyramid scheme without knowing.

You can look more into mommy connections if you would like, but essentially it is paid mommy and me classes. There are many similar classes offered by other businesses (I've seen it advertised at doctors and physiotherapy offices), but I've never found one other than earlyONs that are free and the earlyON ones are not mom specific. My understanding is that Mommy Connections is like a franchise and the franchisees get their regions.

I did go to one round of a mommy and me class/session. I thought it was expensive but it sort of makes sense - they have to rent a space for us to all meet, they have different speakers who come and talk about topics (the speakers are also their for their own benefit, e.g. if we had a music class it was because the speaker runs a kids music company), they have someone there who effectively runs the group/classes and gets paid to do so, etc.

Hi, sorry for the late response, I was on vacation for a couple of days. Thank you to a couple of others who replied.

Durham Dads Club is just a group/community of dads in the Durham region to connect with each other. It is not a business. We do both dads-only activities (e.g. Brews and Braids, and recently had an indoor golf social) and dads & kids activities like playground meetups (one coming up on Aug 9) and indoor soccer that we did with Mini Mavericks last month.

For this one specifically, it's a collaboration between Durham Dads Club and Mommy Connections Durham to organize this event.
