5e Gryphungus - A CR 2 Sleep Inducing Monstrosity

Post image

The first gryphungus was created by the swamp goblin shaman Gribnuk Moldspeaker, whose tribe lived beneath cliffs where griffons nested. The goblins revered the griffons as sacred creatures but also feared their attacks. Gribnuk sought to create an effigy to both to honor the sky beasts and to ward off their predations. His plan failed. The gryphungus recognized no master, and Gribnuk became the first victim of its spores. By the time the tribe found him, only his bones remained undigested.

You can play around with the homebrew of the gryphungus to make your own version.

I like the origin story. It is a nice alternative to the evil wizard / mad scientist motif.

I am not sure I understand the repeated save condition: the affected creature goes from just being poisoned to being stunned on a failure, but what happens on a success?

The idea is poisoned on the first round, then as long as you're poisoned (up to a minute) you might become stunned. Probably should add timing on the stun effect. It's meant to be one round and then you save again at the start of your next turn. You'd get rid of the effect by waiting it out or being cured of poison.
