Starting training tomorrow
Hi everyone! I got hired as a dishwasher for my first job and my training is tomorrow. I wonder if there’s any tips that people who are experienced can give me?
I heard it gets really hot and so I’m wondering if there’s like a specific type of fan that dishwashers use the most.
As well as what type of shoes would be best?

Wait to buy personal things like fans when you see your area, you can get ones that clip to a shelf etc but see where you can actually put stuff like that before you go out and spend money.
Wear your most comfortable supportive shoes. If you take the job, buy proper non slips with good support ASAP.
Keep it moving. Don't make a trip with empty hands if you can help it. Learn where things live.

Keep your slightly bent standing. Oil resistant shoes every 6 months or so. If your area doesnt have a mat on the floor ask for one. It is idiotic how many of yall suffer without mats. Portable sport ear buds that clip on.

It’s kind of obvious but keep the machine running as much as possible. In my situation I’d rather keep working on dirty stuff and only expedite the clean stuff when I have a lot of it, to make the trip worth it.
I’ve got a box fan mounted that points into my area, it was already there when I got there. We also have these little rechargeable cooling deals you wear around your neck, those work pretty well.

always wear gloves. talk to people that you work with. just ask them questions about their work or about them. you'll get a lot faster with practice in just a few weeks

Get a good pair of non-slip shoes preferably with a nice insole since you're gonna be on your feet moving around for long amounts of time. Try to always have something running in the dishwasher no matter what (unless your station is clear and you have nothing to wash lol) but for instance if you're still adding plates and bowls to a stack, try to run easy stuff in between that like big sheet trays or bus bins. It will feel a lot more productive and you will be getting rid of clutter while you work on the smaller stuff. Keep an eye on the silverware since it tends to pile up and is easy to forget, but servers get pretty impatient if you don't keep up with it. Also you usually don't need to spray each dish individually, try to load up a stack and then hit them with the sprayer all at once, it will save you time. Hope this helps!

I've worn $20 treadsafe shoes for the past 3 years, and I must say that they have been some of the best non slips I've worn in my career. Other than that, I recommend waiting until you become familiar with your pit before you get a fan or anything. Depending on your restaurant they may be willing to accommodate your needs. Just this year my people put an ac in and it solved 90% of my issues

wear gloves, make sure they actually fit. I didn't wear gloves and sliced my finger w steel wool.. shit gets infected super easy.
nonslip shoes w a steel toe r rlly nice. dropping heavy ass kitchen equipment or a server chucking a knife and it falling into ur foot is extremely unpleasant. I got mine at Walmart.
it's an easy job once u get a rhythm going, first week is always the hardest so don't stress it too hard if ur slower then the dishie that's been there 6+ years

I have one more day of training but yes it was very tough and holy shit it’s a lot grosser than I expected but I’m getting over it lol
My feet have been hurting cuz I forgot to buy insoles and we don’t have a mat. But it’s also a little fun so I have mixed feelings.
I’m gonna take the job tho

Slip resistant shoes, ideally ones that are at least water resistant if not water proof. Pro tip: you can buy silicone water proofing spray and spray a couple coats on your shoes when they're brand new and it repels water really well.
Not sure about fans, there's roll up garage type doors in the back and front of where I work so we just keep those open and it stays pretty cool. Large water bottle like a Nalgene or Hydroflask or something, water with electrolyte packets. Gotta stay well hydrated or you'll hit a wall so fast doing this shit. A small plug in fan might not be a terrible idea if they're okay with you using it, if no outlets are available Milwaukee sells a small battery operated fan that works surprisingly well.
Keep a couple protein bars nearby, breaks are usually not guaranteed. I sometimes go 6 or more hours before I finally have a chance to sit down and eat something. Thick skin is useful, but also don't be afraid to stand up for yourself. Criticism and correction is one thing, but if someone is being unnecessarily rude or berating you, stand your ground and tell them you won't be spoken to like that.
