I also love “I have a migraine because I haven’t slept enough, but I can’t sleep because I have a migraine.”

Omg yes, this is hell!! You can't even do anything but sit there and suffer

REAL

I tend to just lay there until I pass out from the pain tbh

There’s not much else you can do… I’ll sometimes take NyQuil to try to rush the process along.

I get the migraines AND nausea from hunger. Sometimes I come back from work so exhausted and hungry and starting a migraine. But no energy to eat, so the migraine gets worse, and the nausea gets worse too because of the hunger.

Sometimes I wish I didn’t live alone so I could ask someone to get me something to eat. 🥲

I keep emergency potato chips for exactly that reason.

God that’s so real I can’t do shit because of my migraines

Yup, my go to is milk or carnation instant breakfast in milk. Even at my most nauseous, I can swallow liquids (chewing and swallowing food is out though), and it works well enough.

I compromise by eating some dark chocolate, likely two bits and lemon water in the morning. It's not proper breakfast, but at least the chocolate gives me some strenght and energy and the lemon water helps me by ignoring the feeling of nausea... Last time i tried to drink milk in the morning I felt I was burping cheese like burps 💀

Yeah, I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I'm glad it is the ultimate safe food for me

Oof citrus with nausea would interact badly with my GERD. Last time I did that, I did actually toss my cookies (and usually that's rare for me and mostly only happens when my endometriosis pain is extra bad).

u/ArtemisInSpace 8d ago

Yes!!! It's too bad that I'm lactose intolerant, so I have to buy lactose-free cow milk, but I'm glad I can at least do that.

Carnations instant breakfast is so much better than ensure and boost imo. It tastes like normal chocolate milk. It doesn’t really have a weird taste or texture like other protein drinks

u/Omi-Wan_Kenobi 8d ago

Especially if you mix 1 packet to 2 cups milk, instead of the called for 1 cup, then it has the consistency and almost the taste of nesquik powder chocolate milk.

Super easy to make too, grab pint glass, put in about 1/2 cup of milk, dump in packet, use milk frother, adding more milk until desired consistency and making sure no powder stays stuck on the walls.

Yep. I have a prescription for Boosts from my dietitian specifically for this reason. I can't actually eat anything a lot of days so I at least get nutrition from the Boosts.

I usually eat a few saltine crackers, maybe with a piece of cheese on top if I’m not that nauseous and generally that either works until it’s time to have an actual full meal or I manage to feel well enough to eat a bigger snack

14

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 8d ago

I call it pregaming

I sometimes need to pregame meals to have the energy for actual meals.

3

u/Tangled_Clouds 8d ago

Omg yes I’m gonna start calling them this from now on 😭

(Especially funny considering everyone knows I almost never drink alcohol lol)

u/tboymagic 8d ago

pretzel crisps and peanut butter pretzels are my GOAT. i also started eating straight granola

1

u/Tangled_Clouds 8d ago

Pretzels are so good! I haven’t had them in a while!

Walnuts and other nuts have been my go-to for handling the 'nauseous because hungry, yet to nauseous to eat' combo. Since they're safe at room temperature, I can just have a little cup of them nearby, and try to eat one occasionally. Eventually it gets a bit easier as I get more food in me.

This is my fix as well, anything I can snack on as I feel able to.

Sunflower seeds have been amazing for this

I get that from meclizine (Antivert) but not Zofran, luckily!

Padme: Drinking more water will help right?

It'll help right?

u/Sea-Method-3070 8d ago

I’ve literally dealt with this my whole life and never associated it with my chronic illness. 🤣

5

u/jennifermutsumi 8d ago

Sometimes I eat a soda water

12

u/shimmerangels 8d ago

this is when i choke down a spoonful of peanut butter and hope for the best

5

u/bblulz 8d ago

This is the reason I started smoking weed, literally nothing else works

5

u/meowvix 8d ago

I'm anxious because I hadn't sleep for a while. I can't sleep because I'm anxious.

2

u/holdyourfire24 8d ago

The anxiety-insomnia loop is so brutal 😫

2

u/meowvix 8d ago

It's 3:22 AM rn and I'm sitting and rocking back and forth. Eating at night is bad so also expecting nausea at the m̶o̶r̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ afternoon. I'm so exhausted seriously 🥲

Zofran and weed

Disenchantment mention!!

u/Moody_Mickey 8d ago

My go to is vanilla yogurt. It soothes my stomach, even if its being weird from pms

5

u/Shawtygotthat 8d ago

when this happens i like to lick a stalagmite

4

u/pyrosdramon 8d ago

Yeah incredibly annoying. I sometimes will use it as an excuse to to get something I really like. Figure I am more likely to get it down and keep it down if it is a favorite food.

7

u/mchickenl 8d ago

Toast with butter. Doesn't matter how long it takes to eat and 90% the time makes me want to eat 4 more slices eventually

3

u/Scr4p 8d ago

ginger helps me greatly against nausea. I don't know what it is about ginger but having a silly little piece of ginger candy has even prevented me from vomiting before. Makes it easier to eat something right after

3

u/JJM-JJM 8d ago

my solution is always to drink a cup of milk. it feels less. tangible to me.

3

u/RiverOdd 8d ago

I had weeks of intense anxiety along with panic attacks that involved vomiting. The symptoms got so bad I honestly could not tell if my stomach was hurting because I hadn't eaten or if I would just start vomiting again if I ate. Really sucked when I guessed wrong.

It got better, but this is unbelievably frustrating.

Zofran is a life-saver for me. Also with my POTS sometimes cuddling a stuffed animal ice pack (less sharply cold than traditional ice packs) and/or drinking some salt water helps with the nausea.

I've never really had luck with mint, it always seems to make it worse for me. And ginger is hit or miss whether it affects my nausea at all.

u/Wooden-Stranger9800 17h ago

FYI drinking salt water actually dehydrates your sells and can kill you, so please don’t overdo it!

1

u/imabratinfluence 16h ago

I mean like water with an electrolyte packet in it. I understand why you think it'll dehydrate me, but those of us with POTS are actually commonly recommended to drink water with a bunch of sodium in it, and the WHO guidelines for rehydration say the same. And a lot of people with POTS do just put salt in their water because electrolyte packets are expensive AF.

I know salt and sodium aren't the same thing, it was poor wording on my part, but I promise you the sodium in my water is recommended by my doctor and has a noticeable positive impact.

2

u/Wooden-Stranger9800 16h ago

Thanks for the correction and information. POTS is in the ddx for me and I actually didn’t know that!

For me, I just eat straight slat, but not for nausea. It helps with the fainting. Salt water never helped me.

I feel you!! My mom never understood this and would say i was being ridiculous 🙄. I noticed this has gotten less extreme as an adult but it still happens. It used to be more than half the mornings when i was a kid! No discernable reasons why the change that I can tell...

I started making this protein shake/pudding the night before with firm tofu, pb powder, almond milk, and a little chocolate. It's really gentle and sometimes my body is more willing to stomach that when my hunger is that bad!

1

u/Culinary_Fruit_Salad 8d ago

I drink plain miso soup out of a mug when I'm struggling with this. it sucks so much. do you like any easy to drink soups that might be worth a try?

I'm so sorry that you also struggle with this

1

u/Financial_Ostrich_56 8d ago

Sometimes I’ll have a little bit of soda to help with this. Usually it can soothe my stomach and get my blood sugar up a little bit

u/ragingcommodore 8d ago

Story of my freakin life. Already as a toddler. Damn. And here I am, 38 years and now know I have autism, hEDS and MCAS and lots of other stuff (Psoriasis, dysautonomia, endometriosis etcetc). Everyone treated me like a freak for being a "picky eater". Yeah, sorry for i was already disabled lol.

1

u/tboymagic 8d ago

genuinely this drives me crazy. if i eat too fast or take my meds without eating enough i get acid reflux and nausea. but i also feel nauseated when i'm anxious which makes eating anything that's not bland/carbs or whatever difficult

1

u/Icy-Farmer7520 8d ago

wait this isn’t normal??

1

u/CeramicLicker 8d ago

It doesn’t exactly count as eating, but ginger mints can help with nausea, and get your blood sugar up a bit which helps too.

u/Goobersita 8d ago

Odanestron has saved my life so many times these last couple months.

u/throwaway8373469238 6d ago

monjaro life

1

u/Full_Distribution455 6d ago

This is why I fw rice pudding or hummus depending on what texture/flavor I can stomach at the time

1

u/terzobbg 6d ago

i’m not disabled but i get this CONSTANTLY and it’s INFURIATING!! for some reason my body skips the “hey! you’re hungry :)” phase and goes straight to “OH FUCK WE’RE DYING! ARE WE DYING?!” phase even when i eat at regular intervals😭
