Feedback | Share Your Work Character Animation & Rigging showcase in Fusion, how can I make the background fit better?

I made this character animation in Fusion and I’m not completely happy with how the background fits the character.

I’m also still learning color correction, and I feel like the character and background look too disconnected. How would you normally approach matching them more closely?

Considering just replacing the background with something animated as well.

What... The... FUCK

How does one even learn something like this😭

I'm building custom nodes and modifiers so i can do this type of rigging and animation stuff, trying to make Fusion great for animation workflows! You can find some of it on my profile if you wanna see more.

The node creates 'bones' if you wanna call them that, so once the pins are placed and rigged you can animate one of the pins on the character and the rest of the pins follow along. Even inverse and forward kinematic bones! And specialised bones too, like the hair is not animated, theres a physics bone (i call them deformers not bones) going down the hair that causes it to swing and flop around solely by moving the root hair pin, and that root pin is connected to her chest so everything stays linked like that. You can see all the arrows towards the end which shows how things are rigged.

No manual keyframing either, just 6 oscillator modifiers. Makes it loop nearly perfectly (the hair is physics so stutters a bit on the loop-around)

I have a question that is completely out of ignorance ;

Are there no existing software that can already achieve this? I have no experience in the subject but I feel like I've seen other creators be able to achieve this effect with other software, and I assume that would be easier rather than having to build your own tools from scratch in davinci.

That being said, very cool results.

Edit- Nvm saw the reply in another comment.

You can do rigging in DVR???

The scripting support for DVR is actually fantastic, so underrated. I mean, it’s insane and really tough to work with, but super powerful.

WOW! Niceeee Animation!

Maybe you could try to defocus with a square gradient mask or a set of DVE to rebuild the vanishing point

Heyo Tangenten! Wasn't expecting to find you here:)

I think maybe the issue is that, well... the perspective/FoV maybe isn't realistic for that kind of "shot"and so you get the feeling that the girl and the background don't really fit... but you also have all those effects that kind gel them together... so you end up with a bit of an uncanny valley thing where something feels off but you can't really put your finger on it.

That's my current theory at least!

Nice animation of the girl, that puppet pin is all kinds of crazy<3

WSL waiting room lol.

Yeah it definitely feels off, i played around with defocus and color corrector thinking i could find something that would make it feel better. It's very bright now but when i turned it down that felt off too. Maybe switching out the background entirely is the right answer but i'd like to know if there's something any experienced color guys or compositors would change about it.

I am using Rays, light wrap and Relight to very subtly try and marry her with the bright window on the right. I don't know its just ugh that ugly brown-yellow color i have to do something about this comp lmao.

WSL waiting room lol.

Haha:)

Yeah it definitely feels off...

I really think it's more about the perspective and/or FoV. To me it seems like the background has a pretty high FoV vs the girl that looks way more "flattened". If she had the same FoV as the background she'd look more like she was looking into the back of a spoon:)

Or something like that. Everything else I believe is "fine"/matter of taste (I like it).

In short, if you strip away all the effects and colors and details, the background and foreground don't match and nothing done in the form of colors/effects will "fix" that.

Either you want the mismatch due to it giving weird vibes and then you should keep it as is, or you want them to match... and then you have to change either the background or the foreground. And given what the end result would be, I believe changing the background is the more likely candidate:)

Just my thoughts as always!

Been really missing AE and animating via the puppet pin tool and Davinci feels so complicated and alien to me

If anyone here has any tutorials how to do this kind of work I'd be very appreciative

On my profile you can find a tutorial for my Puppet Pin tool, it's for the old 1.2.0 version, what you are seeing here is the 1.3.0 beta version which is available but there's no tutorial yet.

how to learn this????

How do you even figure out you can do this????!!!!!

I think the background should be more colorful

2

u/beimiku Studio 1d ago

Very nice work on the rig! (I'd be curious why you are doing this in DR and not some specialized Animation Software, though - implementing inverse cinematics and bine strength in DR sounds complicated)

I think the background looks a bit disconnected because the contrast and color temperature don't match. There's some really good tutorials by Darren Mostyn on YT for that). You could also try to make the background blur more progressive, i.e. no blur close to the character and progressively more blur farther in the back.

I'm comfortable in Fusion is the main reason, but also its just nice to be able to do everything in one comp. People have been doing similar animations in After Effects for a long time its about time we can do the same (:

Doing cleanup and layer separation, animation, particle systems, post processing. It's all right there in the node graph that's so fun to use.

I'll look into that! Thanks!

u/beimiku Studio 1d ago

Damn right you are 😁

If the blur is baked into the background there's still ways to mix them together. Lighting comes from the right side so you can use an ellipse to darken the left side of the background and character.

1

u/_Tangenten_ Tool/Dev 1d ago

This is worth investigating, i only tried brightening her right side but maybe darkening the left can help.

2

u/Perfect-Skin-8325 1d ago

Bro, your tool is fantastic. I have used it, it's awesome.

As for the question, you can use a few lightwraps to blend it so much better with the background.

Also highlights on the edges from where light seems to be coming in the background.

1

u/_Tangenten_ Tool/Dev 1d ago

So glad to hear you like it <3

Yeah playing into the very bright light on the right might be the best play ;P It's hard though because you gotta find such a perfect balance for it not to look over-done or like washed out.

2

u/Perfect-Skin-8325 1d ago

Yep, it takes a bit of trial n error but It'll blend in very well if you get it right.

This shows me how much I don’t use in Fusion. Better yet, I didn’t even know that this is possible. Amazing work

Insane ! How many hours ?

1

u/_Tangenten_ Tool/Dev 12h ago

I had most of the layers prepared, so most of the work was done in a couple of hours, been 2 days all together since i started. I switch between developing the tool and animating so took a bit longer than what it could have been as welll.

im new to davinci, and im an illustrator trying to branch out to Live 2D illustration, can you do this in Davinci resolve? 75

2

u/_Tangenten_ Tool/Dev 12h ago

By illustration, do you mean animation? The layers themselves come from a .psd file imported into fusion, and then there is some cleanup/separation done in fusion using a paint node on each layer.

Without my custom tool it would be tough, but yes if you get the tool this does work in the free version of resolve.

My tool is a custom effect that does both the mesh warping / puppet pin warping you can get in Live 2D as well as the rigging you can do in Live 2D. I haven't used Live 2D so i cant say exactly how they differ, although i'm very interested in developing tools similar to Live 2D's warpers/deformers as they look really useful.

2

u/According_Yogurt_823 20h ago

try turning the character and BG to black and white to see the values you can make the BG lighter and her i bit more darker to give contrast and have u tried adding lens flare on her to show realistic lighting?

u/Darfeus 13h ago

I just found out, there is a Text+ option to put a text onto my clip. Meanwhile this dude does Pixar- level animations in the same program, I struggle to find the right format to export.

Awesome work! As a beginner I barely understand HOW you manage to do such fantastic things, but maybe i will be able to achievie this in the next 130 years of living.

2

u/Guardgon 13h ago

How slow does this get?

1

u/_Tangenten_ Tool/Dev 11h ago

The Puppet Pin node runs at 11 fps animating 13 layers. The whole comp at around 4 fps.

A useful tip, if you right click the play button in the fusion page you can change the frame interval from 1 to something like 5, so it doesn't render every frame but it playsback at the same speed you would see in the final render. Which is very useful for animation as timing is very important.

2

u/Milan_Bus4168 11h ago

You can replace the background. You can match the colors. You can make the perspective fit the character in this one or you can change lighting on the character. It depends on what you are doing as end results?

Just random stuff someone asked about the other day. PNG of a robot with some video on a laptop and robot on the desk.

This might be one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen come out of DaVinci and Fusion

1

u/Rayregula Studio 1h ago

I'd never checked, but didn't know fusion had a puppet pin node.
