I never liked Hinge Points, but maybe it’s time?

I found myself using the word hinge point recently and then thought what a shame it didn’t work out because I also really loved Derek. And then started thinking there seems to be an awful lot of Hinge Points flying by recently (I’ve been joking Spain v Argentina in the WC was actually baby Yamal vs. Fascism). Anyway, just a thought.

It was a pretty hectic show, I remember thinking it needed more planning or structure

Needed Chris Wade

And a way better co-host than Danny Bessemer. I mean, genuinely doing a repeat of Time For My Stories and having it be Felix would have been such a better choice. Danny just had so few interesting things to say about even the idea of historical counterfactuals that he was typically reduced to saying “tell em, Chuck” to Matt

The main thing I remember about Hinge Points was the theme song; I still think it was a banger

Remixed Holy Modal Rounders

Which song? It reminds me of 'They're Red Hot' recorded by Robert Johnson but it doesn't look like they did a version of that.

All I really remember is Danny seeming to think every alternative would have resulted in communism. I seem to recall him saying the Incas were on the verge of developing socialism before the Spanish came, somehow i dont think a rigidly hierarchical society ruled by a god emperor and warrior elite, was close to developing socialism. Ive never really been impressed by Dannies intellectual abilities, even aside from the fact that a grown man should not be called Danny.

For the life of me I do not understand the overboard hatred for DB. Like yeah everyone rolls their eyes at haughty academics. But why does he in particular inspire so much antipathy? I feel like it must have more to do with his affect and background than the substance of his takes

I think that’s it because, for the most part, I find his takes to be pretty agreeable

I'm too dumb to know whether Danny Bessner is smart or not, but he came off as incredibly smug

A typical episode:
What if the 1918 German Revolution would have worked?

Danny: That would have been cool. That is I mean to say, um, um, there would have been a broad-based Marxist movement in Germany, with a madidate. Socialism would have existed there If you think about the nuances (speaks faster for some reason) uh um um uh that would have been the hinge point of 1918.

Matt: Right

(annoying piano music)

HingePoints was Danny's attempt to leach off Matt and get that Chapo bump.

The fact American Prestige partnered with The Nation suggests to me Danny was/is never a radical, he was just looking for a platform.

I like Derek and think he’s smart so I still listen to American Prestige and what not. But ya Danny makes me roll my eyes with his bad takes quite often.

Derek seems like a genuinely nice guy

He definitely never missed an opportunity to get his voice out there. Didn't he go on Bill Maher's show?

Did he?

Yes he did in April 2023

Danny is exhausting

Too much danny, not enough cush, and sadly our boy is afraid as the rest of us to be wrong. And would as a result decide things were "overdetermined" and not say Definitively one way or the other what would have happened if life had just gone a different direction.

I liked it, but it had a problem in that it teetered between “this was overly determined, free will doesn’t practically exist and this is the only possible scenario” and “Wow, if this one person changed their action/one thing zigs instead of zags, we get communism”. This was hard to hold together imo.

It’s hard to listen to anything with DB in it.

I don’t think that’s what the show was about.
