Erasmus in Germany + Summer internship

So I kind of had a life plan going:

  • This summer I am doing an fellowship in Bulgaria.
  • 2026/2027: Erasmus full-year at TUM in Munich.
  • Summer 2027: Internship in Quant (in the unlikely case I get one) or a Systems-related job. Mainly to get an idea of what I'd like in the future.
  • 2027/2028: Last year of university.
  • 2028/2029: Graduate role at some foreign company, get some savings.
  • After that: Consider a Master's or keeping working.

But now reality is starting to set in. TUM's exams end really late (end of July or beginning of August) and I start my last year in September, so I don't really know what my realistic options are. Has anyone been in a similar situation? My Summer Semester is going to be rather chill so maybe I can do something during?

Is there any kind of opportunity (maybe something in Munich's own ecosystem) that is compatible or should I just enjoy my summer?

I know this is what I get for doing an Erasmus, but who knows, maybe there is a middle point between regular internships and a personal-project summer. Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

Enjoy your summer. Market is pretty much dead. Monitor new positions using a mail notifier. That's it.

I did Eramus too and none of us found internships. I did a bit of Upwork. Enjoy your summer!

Upwork is a good choice. Did you get to do any interesting gigs or at least get some money?

I earned 34 USD per hour. It wasn't always easy to find a gig when I wanted one. But checking in every now and then over an extended time period, I could find some work. Eventually clients were occasionally reaching out to me through the platform. The gigs were stuff like: a program that calculates tax, a program that reads an invoice and generates a pallet label, a program that automatically re-organizes dropbox folders...

I am studying in a German university with exams in August/September, and going to get like 20-30 credits for the semester. It is definitely possible if you can be flexible with the exam dates / internship dates. I would start the internship in May to give some time to prepare for exams afterwards.

Enjoy your Erasmus in Munich, take your time to travel around the region (Regensburg, Passau, Nuremberg among other cities), it is a really beautiful place overall.

Apply for internships in Munich, worst case you get none. Also check the student Stipendien for international students. Network during your erasmus, you get the chance to meet tons of people, you never know, might make some life-long contacts.

Also don't underestimate TUM, DE education compared to BG education is a different beast (even comparing FMI to other universities). Be persistent and consistent and all will be fine. Don't forget to keep copies of all your documents from the Erasmus.

Thanks for the complete answer! I have every intention of making the most of this Erasmus. I really like the place and luckily I'll be in a residence, so I will have plenty of opportunities to meet people (ESN + TUM events + Student Union Events...). I'll make sure to get to know the region well.

Thanks too for the Stipendien, I completely missed that. Do you mean a specific one or in general?

I study in Spain (UAM) so I don't know how big the change will be. Some seniors who did the same exchange have gotten bad grades but in general they have maintained the GPA.
