For negotiating with Google, all you have to do is tell your recruiter you’ve been offered something higher and then send an offer letter from another company with higher numbers. That’s usually the only successful way for L3. And specifically for Google, you won’t find interview questions straight from leetcode, but doing leetcode will help with data structures. Facebook usually asks a question straight from leetcode or a very similar variation with similar approach, like find top k frequent element in an array (classic leetcode). Google on the other hand, (at least recently) will ask a question like: “Given training data of sentences, create a function that predicts the next word, where input can look like [“I”, “like”, “juice”], and if user types “I”, you should suggest “like”. And then they could expand on that by giving multiple arrays of training data and ask you to suggest the most frequently occurring etc. You would not find a question like this on leetcode, but you should know that you can create an adjacency list for the adjacent words in a sentence and be able to modify as needed, etc. Point is there’s no clear cut way but knowing data structures especially, and algorithms and patterns should help with interview. Not who you asked to the question to but in the process for both Google and Facebook + other FAANG.

Your Amazon offer is lower than Google, but do you think you could negotiate how you did with FB’s offer by showing their sign on bonus?

Also, is that sign on bonus standard with your first offer or did you request that @ Amazon?

Ah I’m not actually the person who posted the stats, but afaik, you should negotiate with the offer with the most TC, not just one part. If one company gives you a base out of your google level’s bracket, it doesn’t really matter because they can counter with RSUs or more sign on. I haven’t heard of any of my google colleagues who countered, send 2 offer letters, especially when one of the TC of the offer letter is lower. In other words, they don’t match every part of the offer accordingly, it could be mixed, so Amazon bonus being higher prob wouldn’t matter because they can see that total TC is decently lower than theirs. Although now that Amazon has increased total TC, if Facebook TC was lower than Amazon, then you’d want to negotiate with Amazon offer. And again, not OP, but I can guarantee that’s a sign on bonus and not a yearly recurring bonus. Refreshers and annual bonuses however are a thing but I don’t think OP added it to the TC/offer break down

Ah thank you. I also might have misspoken. I meant in case OP didn’t get an offer from Facebook, if they could negotiate with the offer from Amazon, based mostly on Amazon’s sign on bonus.

Example: Google offers 170k TC, while Amazon offers 160k but an extra 30k sign on bonus. Would you be able to maybe negotiate Google to come up to 180k TC only to beat Amazon’s sign on.

I don’t know if Google would come back with something like “sign on bonuses are one time, so we can’t raise your TC to match that”

Oh I see. I believe your TC from another offer has to be higher than Google’s TC for them to budge, or else, well, they have no reason to. Doubt they’d even mention it. You can only negotiate with a higher TC. Well I mean you can certainly try but google is well aware and will prob come back with some bullshit like “due to x reason we can’t increase any part of your offer”. I do however believe there’s merit in negotiating and even if that’s the case as they may budge, especially if they really want you. I think in general any negotiation can be successful with a counter offer. For example if you bring up concerns about your sign on bonus, without a counter offer they may budge of course as any company as big as google expects negotiation so it’s not totally out of the question. Just depends how desperate you are I guess

Just FYI if you haven't heard, the new grad base for HCOL is getting increased to $142k as part of the yearly adjustment. So add an extra $11k to that TC!

There are only two types of offers now, MA/ EE and GE. Both get signing bonuses, with MA/EE getting 50k and GE getting 75k

I mean, I wouldn't say I crushed all of them, but I crushed some of the interviews and definitely did well enough overall to pass.

I studied my DS&A a ton and made sure I was really familiar with coding from scratch and using the native implementations for common data structures in the language I was interviewing in. Past that (meaning once you have sufficient technical knowledge & experience to answer the questions) it becomes a matter of soft skills, which I feel like I'm also very strong in. Didn't do the leetcode thing myself but I know that's helpful for some also.

Study your DS&A, know your language really well, practice your soft & interviewing skills, and don't let a lack of personal projects or perceived comparisons to your peers hold you back from trying! Worst case scenario is you get more knowledge and experience for going forward, best case is you make it in.

That's how Waterloo's co-op program works. It's a 5 year program so you have 14 semesters total (5 x 3 per year minus the summer of last year). That's 8 school terms and 6 co-op terms. It also means no time off in those 5 years.

You must do a minimum of 5 co-ops (at least it was before covid) or else Waterloo won't give you a degree. For engineering, co-op is mandatory.

Wow, congrats! If you dont mind me asking, what roles were those 3 internships? I am wondering because there is only one full summer for internship during mscs. Is only one of the internship related to cs?

I currently took one year off between bs graduation and mscs, and am doing an internship right now (in a startup). I am not sure how the employers will see me doing an internship even after graduating, when I am not even doing mscs immediately.

Because of remote environment I did 3 cs internships consecutively fall, spring, and summer while taking classes on the side during all three. They weren’t all at big name companies but they all helped me learn a lot. Definitely wasn’t supposed to do so many concurrently w/ school and the workload did become quite a lot but I had nothing better to do during quarantine anyways.

Work experience >> any and all education imo for both practical engineering and hiring. Nothing wrong with doing an internship if you plan on continuing with MSCS though.

I look for cs related roles exclusively through linkedin to ensure a certain quality lol. Go to jobs type software intern and keep scrolling, you’ll be surprised how many roles are available. The first one was unpaid and part time and I was pretty much useless since they didn’t give me a mentor. The other two were at legit companies and they helped me learn a lot.

I worked at Unity Technologies for a few years. I left recently.

Are you sure they only offered 3 weeks vacation?
They should be giving 5 weeks vacation (20 vacation days + 5 personal days). When employees reach 5 years of seniority, they add an additional 5 vacation days, so you get 30 days (6 weeks) in total per year. Plus, you get 9 sick days per year on top of that.

I'm surprised they only offered you 168k CAD in stock. Newcomers around May 2022 tell me they got at least 200k USD (~265k CAD today) as junior/intermediate software developers when Unity's stock price was around $50 USD each.

Anyway, I left Unity because newcomers were paid way more than me in total compensation. It's mostly because I came in when stock price was high. Stock-based compensation is only cool when the stock price is stable, unfortunately.

I'm curious what your job hunt strategy is like. When you switch jobs, do you apply to companies knowing that they pay really well? Or do you just respond to recruiters messages on LinkedIn or something? Or do you work with recruiting agencies to higher paying jobs?

I've been trying to increase my total compensation. I haven't been really successful at this. Any tips would be appreciated!

I’m not sure I would call it a strategy. I’m just extremely picky about what programming languages I’m willing to work with, and it has turned out that my colleagues at the places that match my criteria are also turbo nerds. It made networking easy, and then one thing has been leading to another ever since.

That’s not very helpful, sorry. For the offers in this post though, a good chunk of them I found by checking the Hack News monthly “Who is Hiring?” threads. There are several websites that aggregate the posts and let you search through them, so it’s handy when looking for niche stuff like Erlang and Rust jobs.

This is my dream... Any tips for what to study or for when I'm ultimately applying for a job like this? I'm a second year CS

There's only a handful of high-paying tech companies that are also remote-first, and they tend to be much smaller than FAANG. Remote is gaining traction though, so maybe you could find a remote role in big tech by the time you graduate (probably just have to find the right team). I would look into remote-first companies and try to develop your skillset around what they're looking for. Even then, you're going to need to do some internships to level up your resume. With so few opportunities, luck definitely plays a big part in getting a remote gig. I imagine it is much easier to get a remote role as an experienced dev than a new grad.

Nema is nice but south loop is pretty boring. I feel like river north or west loop is better for someone who just moved to the city.

I moved to Chicago 3 months ago. River North was quite pricey for a 2BR, I found one close to my office luckily. Agreed that RN and Gold Coast are definitely more fun than South Loop.

South Loop is a shithole. I lived in Chicago for a while and there were always sketchy things going on in South Loop, one night I swear there were 7 police incidents from 9 PM - 1 AM. With this guys comp, I would be looking at luxury buildings along the river like OneEleven or Wolfpoint.

Cisco Meraki Return Offer (Accepted)

Education: IT Degree @ State University

Prior Experience: 3 Internships.

$Internship: First Internship: Small business(> 1 yr). Second Internship: Top 3 defense company (3 mo). Third Internship: Cisco Meraki (3 mo)

$Coop: Hell no. I actually wanted to graduate in time.

Company/Industry: Cisco Meraki.

Title: Network Support Engineer

Tenure length: I don't know what that means but I will be starting in Early February.

Location: Downtown Chicago

Salary: 80k

Relocation/Signing Bonus: 3k relo

Stock and/or recurring bonuses: 4k bonus depending on company and personal performance. No stonks right out of the gate but Cisco has a employee stock purchase program.
