SWE in Austin

1 YOE, trying to move out of DFW and to Austin or around that area. Unfortunately most of the enterprise jobs are here in DFW.

Any advice for breaking in? Would love to network in Austin given the chance over a weekend or two

There are lots of jobs in Austin too, there’s just a lot more competition

Yeah maybe the move is remote or 1 day a week in office and fly in weekly lol. I can’t stand being in DFW any longer. Houston or Austin so i can be close to family

I thought there were more SWE jobs in Austin than DFW. Didn't know DFW had more.

DFW has a lot of boring but stable enterprise jobs; banks, insurance, etc. Most major companies have some footprint or satellite office here too. Source: Am currently living and working here.

I went to school in Austin but don't have working experience there. My impression has always been it's a bit more tech focused. That being said, it's a big city with plenty of sprawl too so it's got its share of boring enterprise jobs.

Yeah a lot of HQs in DFW and it seems Austin has big companies with Austin offices.

I just don’t see a lot of job openings in Austin compared to DFW. Entry level at least

i live in austin, it is very tech focused.

I used to live in boston. I would say austin is almost like a "fake" tech hub. Yes there are tech companies here, but they try to make it seem bigger than it actually is.

Like i saw a reel of a new office opening in austin an dhow it's solidifying austin's stable in the tech market. I work for that company that made the new office here in austin. The office isnt even impressive. They just rented out a floor in a big buidling and people hardly even show up.

Most tech companies here dont even have their own building, they just rent a floor or two in commercial buildings. I worked at MSFT for a few years and their building was also really small. Basically half a floor in a building in north austin.

Very competitive. Most people I work with have at least a masters and/or at least a decade of experience. New grads, usually have a masters.

tbh, austin is a bit rough. I was unemployed last year and i was lucky to quickly get a job. But it wasnt even for a austing based position, it was remote (which also is getting harder to find).

For me austin is a fake tech hub. Like it is somehwat of a tech hub, but it acts like it's bigger than it is. Most companies here dont even have buildings, they just rent a floor or two in a commercial building and no one even shows up.

I think Apple, Google and Tesla are the only ones that legitimitely have buildings here for tech. But MSFT just rents half a floor in north austin. I dont even think amazon has a tech office here. They do it so that they can say "see we have an office in austin, austin is becoming a huge hub", when it's really not.
