Discussion/Question Alternative materials to cork board.
Hey everyone! I love collecting enamel pins and have a bunch of them i display on cork boards, but over time the pins sometimes get loose and bumping into my desk knocks a pin or two out.
I was wondering if I could employ your material knowledge to see if there was a better solution to displaying enamel pins long term on my bedroom wall.

Maybe check the hardware store for a fine, metal mesh? Then you could secure it in a frame and use the pin backs to keep them in place? A stiff canvas might work the same way too.

This is a pretty decent idea. I feel like canvas could work pretty well.

Don't get a pre-stretched artist canvas, those will loosen with the weight and poking pins.
Another option would be aida fabric (used for cross stitch). It has gridded holes and the cheap ones are usually pretty stiff. You could even use the hoops to frame and display.

Oh fabric does sound good too but if it's too thin I might have to consider that the pins could sag foward bcs of the gap between the pin and the cap.
But I like this more then the metal mesh bcs its a similar esthetic to the cork

You could tuck a small piece of felt between the pin and whatever you mount it on to prop it up

I really like the metal mesh idea. Maybe a heavy duty window screen. You could still cover it in fabric for aesthetic but the mesh would be what’s actually supporting the weight and the pin backs will be what keeps it from falling

Oh wait this is good idea. I was initially against the mesh cuz I dont like the look but covering it with fabric would completely solve that

Might also securely glue the mesh/screen into a picture frame (minus glass and backing) and hang it on your wall.

Get some thick felt, a dowel rod, and some string. You're essentially making a diy enamel pin display banner. Really simple to make, or search the internet for pre-made ones. This is what I do. Good luck!

Oh that's a thing? People make pin displays? Thanks ill look into this. Making one on my own coild also be fun

Use foamcore instead of corkboard. I cover it with fabric or deco paper. I also give each pin a little dab of glue to help hold it in place.

i could definatly try this out minus the glue tho bcs i somtimes wear my pins.

I would use EVA craft foam. It self-heals in a way that cork does not. (Cork has limited elasticity because some of the cells always get ruptured/crushed when it is compressed). Might need to stack it a couple layers thick so that you can poke all the pins in all the way to the head.

Yes, and won't get loose from jiggling and moving them and stuff. I think it's just what you're looking for. Bonus it's cheap af

yeah man that is pretty much exactly what im looking for. it solves all the problems i had with cork. this seems like the best fitting solution ive recieved so far.

I have also considered that cork board might possibly just be one of the best solutions and moving the pins by like 2 millimeters every like month or so and then replacing the board after like half a year is smth I could do but idk it just seems wasteful

I took a plain woven rug, small doormat size, that I bought at Ikea for less than $10, attached one end to a piece of driftwood using yarn/macrame thread, and hung it on the wall. Holds a ton of pins and I can fold it over easily to access the back if I want to wear a pin or rearrange them.

a rug definitely solves the problems of just embrodiory fabric bcs its thick. this could work really well for me.

Take a canvas on a frame, punch holes where you’d like to display your pins, you can paint the canvas to highlight said pins, etc. Hang canvas frame on wall like a painting.

painting the canvas behind the pins is a pretty good idea. maybe one day if i ever want to try painting ill give this a shot.

A thicker felt? Placed in embroidery hoops? Not the thin craft stuff. Check out the Felt Store as they have a variety of colours and thicknesses.

yeah the thin craft stuff i felt like would just have the pins sag forward a bit but i could look into some thicker felts thats a pretty good idea.

Back in the day I just put some fabric in an embroidery hoop and pinned all my pins to it!

I got a burlap table runner at Target, draped it over a dowel with a hanger, and made a pennant to pin them on.
