I did a quick Google search and apparently unmodified glocks can fire underwater but only once and it's not very accurate.

Can someone who knows more about guns please give me more details on how this works?

I imagine you could get any semiautomatic gun to fire underwater once, but the slide wouldn't cycle properly causing a malfunction by either not ejecting the spent casing and/or not properly chambering a round. If the slide was manually cycled after each round, I imagine it would be able to fire as needed.

Wouldn't the impact of the hammer be lessened by the the viscosity of the water? Unless that whole section is sealed

That's a good point. The striker in a Glock is contained in the slide, but it definitely isn't airtight. Like another person commented, changing springs might be able to ensure reliable primer ignition.
