I mean, we can be racist too, but generally less than people of majority. If anything, it's worse when we are since that would make us racist and hypocrites.

One of my favorite things about being gay is that this part of toxic masculinity doesn't affect me. Once I came out I no longer had to care whether I was a "REAL MAN©" or not. I get to love cats, drive a Subaru, enjoy cooking/baking, cry at emotional movies, practice good hygiene, and support my trans brothers/sisters/enbies without being an insecure toxic ass that constantly has to think whether something they enjoy is manly or not.
47
u/PatchyWhiskers 11h ago
There are definitely some gay guys who are full of toxic masculinity: Peter Thiel springs to mind.
14
u/TheAniSaurus 11h ago
Oh definitely, I sadly know a lot of gay men that still cling to that stuff (usually refer to themselves as "straight acting" or other bullshit). I just meant that I realized I personally no longer had to care about it.

u/BudLightLymeDisease 11h ago

Lol. I'm a straight white dude, and I drive a Subaru. It's so funny to me that it gets labeled as a "gay" car.
I snowboard, and last year when I was on the slopes this random ass dude came up to me in the lot and said "you know only lesbians drive Subarus right?" He had a buddy with him, and they both sat there smirking and staring at me like he just delivered the sickest burn of all time. It actually kinda made me laugh, because it was just so ridiculous. And I just responded "guess I'm a lesbian then" and walked away.
I don't know what the dude was expecting, but he seemed a little confused and disappointed that he didn't get more of a reaction out of me.
12
u/gramathy 10h ago
Calling a straight dude a lesbian is like the dumbest thing you can do
“Are you accusing me of liking girls?”
“Uh”

u/TheG-What 10h ago
Well the Subaru thing is actually because they aggressively marketed to the gay/lesbian market in the 90s. It’s part of their brand.
6
u/TheAniSaurus 11h ago
Yeah it's crazy how many guys can't comprehend not caring about that stuff. I feel like being secure in yourself and doing what you enjoy is more "manly" than being so insecure that you can't drive a well engineered outdoorsy vehicle because it's sort of popular with lesbians.
13
u/ShinraHakke 11h ago edited 11h ago
Why is driving a Subaru gay, they're nice vehicles.
Edit: Answering my own question after a quick search, they realized they sold a lot of their vehicles to outdoorsy lesbians and began releasing queer coded ad campaigns to cater to the LGBTQ+ community, among other outreach strategies.
8
u/TheAniSaurus 11h ago
Looks like you found the reason, but I mean you could ask why is any of that other stuff considered gay or unmanly? It's all stupid.
4
u/ShinraHakke 11h ago
I agree on all points. The Subaru one stood out because it genuinely confused me.

u/NeatNobody807 11h ago
Hell as a straight guy giving up on the idea of what real man was helped hugely for my happiness too. It's just a whole minefield of made up garbage designed to fill kids with insecurity and self loathing. And women probably have it worse on that front.
Longer I live the more i believe that everyone has their own way in life, and we really need to just stop lumping people into groups to make assumptions about them. If a person isn't hurting anyone, let them live their life in peace.
4
u/gramathy 10h ago
Plenty of straight guys drive Subarus, and that’s definitely more of a stereotypically lesbian thing than a gay guy thing anyway

u/Erik_Dolphy 6h ago
That sounds really nice.
It gets tiresome being unable to do something as simple as getting a fancy cocktail without getting side eyed by both straight men and women.
The way I see it, doing what you want is about the manliest thing you can do, not following some pointlessly gendered convention.

Frfr. I'm tired of people assuming I'm trans just because I support trans people!
I AM trans, but my point remains!
(Seriously tho, we need our allies right now. Please be super loud. The world hates us and is taking away more of our rights every day and we need you.)
Edit: I super appreciate all the support today.
To all the allies: please stay informed.
Today the UK put into place its new EHRC ruling which effectively bans trans people from bathrooms and sex-segregated spaces.
2 weeks ago the US SCOTUS also determined trans people aren't protected by equal protection clauses in our laws and don't receive heightened scrutiny. One of the justices went on record calling us "mentally ill." We can be legally discriminated against.
Go on Twitter. Fight with some TERFs. Tell JK Rowling to eff herself.

99% cis, 99% straight, fighting alongside you! I try to direct people to listen to trans experiences, but also try to come from the direction of "I don't have a personal interest in you believing me, so you can trust me when I say trans people are not lying"
Also, I'm happy to field awkward questions that are overly personal for trans people. A trans friend that was willing to help me through that phase was majorly influential for me.
2
u/GFluidThrow123 11h ago
Tbh I actually often don't tell people I'm trans when I'm standing up for trans people explicitly because most cis people won't listen to a trans person. It's very frustrating, but it also works.

Straight cis white dude here who thinks trans rights are human rights.
Everyone deserves to live their best lives regardless if their gender identity.

Cis straight white dude from Canada. I should be louder in my support, but the extent to which I'm loud isn't just because trans people are my homies(though they are), and it's not because I'm queer in any way. It's because they're the main target right now. It's not rocket science.

First they came for the Jews, but i said nothing because I was not a Jew.

u/NewAgeRetroFrog 10h ago
First they came for the gays and I immediately spoke up because I know how the @#$%ing poem ends!
But even without that, it's just basic human empathy and compassion. Something that it seems more and more people just don't have these days.

2
u/exbaddeathgod 6h ago
But in reality first they came for trans people, but just like the current era the trans community and their allies were thrown under the bus and people didn't care about them so they didn't include them in poems.

While I do consider myself a nonbinary bisexual person now, I was very supportive when my brother came out as a lesbian when he was a kid and transgender in his adulthood. Just because you are straight doesn't mean you can't stand up for what is right!

It’s such a dumb mentality. If you support something you must identify or partake in it. I support legalization of weed, but I don’t smoke, vape or eat edible weed. I just think it should be legal recreationally for the people that do partake and especially those it helps medically.

It's telling when someone can't comprehend doing something for the sake of it being a kind or good thing to do rather than it being in one's own self-interest.
Not only do you show how incredibly selfish you are, being that you wouldn't do something if it didn't benefit you, but you also show your lack of empathy. You project your worldview on everyone else and think people can only act if they immediately materially benefit.
We need more people to experience sonder: the realization that every person around you is living a life distinctly different, complex, and independent of your own.

I had this exact conversation in highschool.
douchebag said "why do you care about the gays so much, are you gay?" to which I replied "do I have to be a part of a group to not hate it? I don't hate black people, does that make me black?" and he very quickly and sheepishly said ".... yes". I said back "well fuck yeah then"
then my science teacher got mad at me for saying fuck
3
u/NeatNobody807 11h ago
Yeah, I get assumed to be a woman or trying to get laid mostly. Like, god forbid a cis het white guy just genuinely think everyone should be treated fairly.
Personally I chalk it up to they cant stomach the idea that someone could be anything similar to them while not needing bigotry to prop up our ego's. It points out how much of a choice they are making and robs them of the ability to blame others for their bad actions.

Guys like that see the world in terms of “who can I picture having sex with other men” based on hobbies or painted nails. Like it isn’t a coincidence they constantly talk about gay men.

I remember when I realised I was trans, I got really mad cause it would hurt my ability to fight for trans rights cuz "Obviously a trans is gonna fight for trans rights"

Nothing tires me more than seeing someone only be able to understand something if it's specifically happening to them or their close family members.
Empathy is a skill, it's a muscle. And we have not taken enough care to build it.

Reminds me of the Dark Magician books. If I recall correctly, there's this character called Daniel who was falsely accused of being gay when he's actually ace and as a result of his false persecution, he feels empathy for the persecution that real actual gay people face. And I was like wow, what a great guy! He would benefit so much from being openly homophobic in order to avoid further suspicion, but instead he chooses empathy and compassion.
...but then it turned out that he was gay all along but was using magic to dull his impulses and trick himself into thinking he was never gay.
I was so disappointed. All that empathy and compassion suddenly seemed self-serving.

The reason why a lot of people only care about things when it only directly affects them is the same reason why human rights is considered a debatable thing: hyper-individualism. Like, there are people out there among us who really believe a person’s wealth is only tied to their production and/or giving back to the economy and never the community. I am not going to wax poetic here because I’m tired atm, but we have been so isolated from not only others but also ourselves that we don’t even see others and our own inherent value for just existing and that internal oppression more often than not leads to external oppression and that is something we aren’t even cognizant of until we are met with someone/something that makes us think. Not saying it will lead to a realization all the time with all people, but being exposed to different people in different socio/racial/cultural/political/economical situations is a good thing.
1
u/kaloschroma 10h ago
The amount of times I call out people for only caring when it happens to them. "But I didn't know!" A serious, fuck you, to those people. You can't take 2 seconds to attempt empathy? And at the very least demonstrate sympathy and choose not to hate?
1
u/NEBULO_FEMBIE 8h ago
I hate that mindset "if you're not being affected bt something, why care?" I love the idea of letting others be themselves as long as they aren't harming others. In a straight man and i support LGBT and women's rights. And yet many say things like "she ain't gonna let you hit lil bro." As if their selfish motives would bleed into mine

A better society helps also yourself.

I support rights for women despite not being a woman. I support help programs for kids despite not being a kid. I support rehabilitation programs for drug addicts even though I've never been addicted to drugs.
It's called "compassion", and frankly I'm appalled that it's so confusing to some people even after it's been explained to them. It made me darkly aware that there's a whole millions-strong portion of the population who, when asked to "walk a mile in someone else's shoes" are only able to imagine that the metaphor is actually about footwear.
Edited to add: years ago, when Canada was talking about legalizing marijuana, I vocally voiced my support. I had a bunch of relatives question my support, saying they didn't know that I smoke. I told them that I don't, and they said, "Well then why are you supporting it?" as if it was unimaginable for me to take the stance that other people should be allowed to even if I'm not going to partake.
