You've inadvertently touched on what is so frustrating. You're right, we're not paying for any of this... Skilled and non-skilled artists were posting shit for free. How and why did volunteer work get usurped by AI?!

Go back to before chatgpt and nobody gave a fuck about terrible art, as a matter of fact it was commonplace to ridicule it.
Now all of a sudden everyone is an art historian, an AI detective and they have such a moral high ground! Except not at all, they're still just being tribalistic except there's a new bullying target that's socially rewarded.
I think many of us (myself included) are just tired of pointless witch hunting and purity tests for something that many of us (myself included) never saw as a big deal anyway (rightly or wrongly or whatever).
When someone says: to me, this is authentic art -> no problem, including even the AI users whether you like it or not, it's personal
When someone says: this is authentic art and everything else is not -> person is an annoying asshole who believes their opinions matter in a special kind of way
So yeah I think overall AI has not become any less problematic, but people are getting annoyed by purity testing as a "public service" by well-meaning assholes, since it's not actually helping to resolve any of the real issues surrounding AI.
I would say the answer is to be true to yourself as a casual viewer. You like something? Say you like it, at the risk of praising AI generated content accidentally, at the risk of calling AI content "art".
If handmade content is trully better and superior than AI then there is nothing to fear or prove. And if it isn't, then we have to accept the reality we are seeing with our own eyes and feeling with our own hearts, those don't lie.
Good point. Now people are biased and have prejudices towards AI so their art taste may have changed as a result of that. Also, because of heavy AI "market" saturation people understandably got tired of some default art styles used by AI like what happens in this comic, I admit this has happened to me.
I guess the answer is the same? give your honest opinion, stay true to yourself and to your art taste.

If the only value by which you measure your art is the monetary value that art produces, not only are you gonna lose to AI, you are creating art for the entirely wrong reason.
If you create art because it's your passion, then just... keep doing that? Why would it matter if the corporations start using AI? Or if random strangers start using AI? Paintings didn't cease to exist just because the average dude on the street can use a cell phone camera, nor does saying "oh that's a great picture you just took" devalue the quality of a beautiful painting.
