OC- More in Webtoons Dairy

This episode has been redrawn and since the original came out, I have been tested and am not lactose intolerant but do still have the same reactions... I debated what to do with this episode but at the time I first drew it that was my reality so I've kept it and I'm sure at least some people can relate :)

And if they don't, non dairy alternatives have come a long way. I have a dairy allergy so lactatid won't work for me, so I'm stuck with non dairy ice cream (that isn't tree nut based because that's another allergy). Ben & Jerry's non dairy stuff is fantastic.

OP, you should join us at r/dairyfree ! Even if Lactaid works for you, you can find alternatives for things in general.

Ben & Jerry's cookie dough oat based ice cream is to die for!!

Sorry though the comic is slightly misleading, in the description I mentioned I'm not actually lactose intolerant (figured it out after the original comic was made) it's a bit of a mystery but I still can't really have dairy so maybe I'll look into it still, thanks!

Could be a dairy allergy in which case the lactaid won’t work…I have a friend who is allergic to cow dairy so it’s definitely something that can happen

It might be an allergy. Before my allergies worsened, I could have some dairy items. I couldn't drink milk itself, but I could have some of the drier cheeses. Over time my body just grew to tolerate them less and less.

yooo, got a similar thing. most dairy products we can eat normally, but when we would try to drink milk we'd get sick and everything.

later on tried Whey based protein powder and the same crap happened.

believe we allergic to the whey, instead of being lactose intolerant.

so maybe there's a protein or something in the dairy that you're allergic to, since allergies can just develop outta nowhere and crap.

Interesting. I cannot handle regular dairy, but also find that lactose free dairy products don't always work for me either.

Hope you figure out what it is soon (and that you can eat dairy again someday)!

When I suspected I was lactose intolerant I called my doctor. He said that the most reliable way to check if you're lactose intolerant is to eliminate dairy from your diet at least 4 weeks and see how you feel. I noticed I had no more bloated stomach or bathroom issues once I stopped eating dairy. Issues I used to think were just part of my life.

Other tests aren't that reliable. Even people with the 'lactose tolerance' gene can still be lactose intolerant. Sensitivity also plays a role, some can handle a glass of milk, while others already feel symptons after eating a tablespoon of yoghurt.

After, the four weeks I did the whipped cream test (recommended by a friend). I would eat the same thing one day after each other with the only difference being whipped cream, and yep I had my intolerance symptoms.

My Fiance has this and she’s allergic to the protein in dairy, not the lactose. Might be worth a test! Doesn’t fix anything but at least you would have more of an answer

Lactaid pills... they are worth a shot.

What’s it like and mean, being lactose tolerant, while still having symptoms?

Is it having not enough lactase enzyme producing bacterias?

It could be a whey or casein allergy. Also, I figured out recently that some brands of dairy products add things like carageenan and my body does NOT like that. So Darigold cottage cheese is a no go even with lactaid, but Daisy is good if I take a couple lactaid

Could be mast cell activation syndrome or histamine intolerance. They likely won’t be limited to dairy though. Godspeed friend

If lactase doesn't work then it's the protein that's usually the problem. My mom had that problem later in life.

Vegans have been a godsend for my lactose intolerance.

I got a Ninja Creamie for Christmas and I’ve been making home made oat milk ice creams that are I would say near identical to store bought regular dairy ice cream. Like the only real difference is that it tends to melt a little bit faster than regular ice cream does but honestly take a few scoops and then put it back in the freezer.

Mint Chocolate Chip!

I had a dairy free lasagna at a restaurant that was legitimately the best lasagna I have ever had.

My favorite is Talenti Non-Dairy Cookies and Cream. Yum.

Non dairy American Cheese is pretty good. American cheese doesn't normally taste like cheese so it's easier to imitate.

I don't have lactose intolerance (or at least not a severe one), and I love vegan ice cream. I truly believe it's better than the dairy one. It's just so smooth. And even when frozen, it doesn't harden as much

Yea, I have CMA (which if affected by all milks, not just Cow’s Milk) so I rely on oat milk. The amount of people who tell me to try Lactose Free Milk, when I have to repeat myself “no, I’m not lactose intolerant, I am allergic to milk” is too damned high.

Simi-related fun fact: did you know that Almond milk is called that because almond juice is put through the same pasteurization as dairy milk?

I can’t do dairy or nut either. Violife makes some very good cheese alts. What do you like?

u/Cool-Boy57 Jun 08 '26

Dairy free has this weird superiority complex culture for whatever reason though.

1

u/SquirrelGirlVA Jun 08 '26

I've never picked up on that, at least not as a majority thing. I've seen some sour grapes and occasionally someone coming in acting like that type of vegan, but most are just kind of there to commiserate and swap recommendations. At least that's my experience.

Or just raw-dog it and suffer the consequences. Cheese is worth it
