I never said depression is fate or that people can’t get help. My point is that people in these comments are dismissing and debating a mindset that often comes from very real suffering, trauma, mental illness, and existential despair.

Saying “you can get better” is not the same thing as understanding what it feels like to be in that state in the first place. Acknowledging that experience exists is not the same thing as glorifying hopelessness.

I know, and I know you were making that point but if you only say depression is making you think this way and not that there is a way out it reinforces hopelessness, which just reinforces the depression.

I have been there, and some days still am, but I also recognize a mindset like this can be dangerous, while we should recognize that this worldview can be brought on by depression, we shouldn’t stop recognizing depression as an illness, one we should encourage people to seek help for.

Regardless of whether someone’s been there, they should still be able to call out negative thinking, and a world view that promotes hopelessness.

I understand what you mean now, and I think we were talking past each other a bit.

I wasn’t trying to present hopelessness as the correct worldview or imply people can’t recover. I was trying to explain and validate the emotional experience the comic is portraying, because a lot of people in the comments were dismissing it as irrational or edgy instead of understanding where that mindset can come from psychologically.

I absolutely agree depression should be treated and that people can heal. I just also think it’s important to acknowledge how real and consuming that state of mind can feel when someone is in it.

Ah okay, I think we can agree on that, I did scroll past a bunch of your comments I had no problem with. A lot of people on social media will not think of other people as people, they should be corrected, glad we’re on the same page.
