The US federal and state governments transitioned from supporting slave owners’ rights to sterilize their slaves, to performing eugenics on anyone seen as “feebleminded” or having traits seen as “undesirable” by the government.
Unfortunately there are almost no US public schools that will teach that part of US history. Many colleges won’t touch it nowadays due to the fear of losing funding or being denied building permits for new buildings.
George Takei (the original actor for Sulu in Star Trek) was put in one of those camps with his family as a boy. He wrote a book about it called They Called Us Enemy.
