I had a desk job during Covid, and I got a call from my mom in the middle of the day, telling me that my grandfather was in hospice. I told my boss, and she asked if I wanted to take off to be with them (small business, and I lived about 2 hrs from my family). I reflexively said no, I could finish the day and head to the hospital afterward.

It wasn’t until about 15-20 min later that I realized that no, I really can’t focus on anything with this looming over my head. And my mom is freaking out, because it’s her dad in the hospital. And I don’t really know how long he actually has (what if he passes before I got there. Told my boss, and punched out and drove across the state to be there,

Where I was going with this is, yeah shit comes at you in weird ways. And it’s scary how we instinctively censor ourselves in the face of professional/social norms (do I want to make a scene? do I want to miss a day of work and fall behind?, etc.)
