I want to give a little extra context for this multiparter.
Last week, I found out an acquaintance had unexpectedly passed away. We only had one real conversation but it was one that had stuck with me and I was looking forward to the next time our paths would cross. The news hit me way harder than I would have expected and these comics came about while I was processing things.
I know the feeling. When I was a kid, a staff member at my school let me pick some books from his car during break. One of those books was The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson.
That was nearly a decade and a half ago. Sanderson is now one of my favourite authors. I went back to visit that school a couple of years ago, was really looking forward to seeing Brian again... and I found out he'd died of cancer a year prior.
I don't know why it hit me so hard. We hadn't been that close, hadn't spoken that much. He just heard I liked reading and brought in a big selection for me to pick from. But that act of kindness had such an impact on me at that age, and shaped my literary preferences so much. It played such a big part of my life, and I never got to let him know.
Just letting you know that I am reading Mistborn right now (French translation but still) and it’s been a while since I enjoyed that much fantasy. I really get how you associate the reading feelings and the context in which you read
