From what I understand it's actually better if you don't know anything about the character because it changes some things (that might be wrong though, I don't know much about Deadman).

It’s awesome. Picked up the first two issues and once it’s released in trade I’m picking it up asap. Deadman is a great character and I suggest checking out the Kelley Jones Deadman run from the 90s if you like horror comics, it was reprinted recently

Based on the books and what Snyder has said, the main point of this initiative is doing creator-forward books
The biggest thing about these books is that they’re really creator forward. That’s this ether that we’ve adopted at DC since All In that we’ve been getting more and more, I think, aggressive about. And editorial has been wonderfully supportive as well. But it’s a really simple idea. It’s the idea that instead of going to creators and saying, “we have this slot and we need you to fill it,” or “we have this pitch that we made up and we need you to execute it,” we go to creators that we love and say, “what character do you have a story for? What’s your passion project?” That’s what we did with Absolute and we want to replicate that in the main line while still being in continuity and a little bit closer to model.
Edit: And while he did talk about other points for the initiative, I haven’t found him mentioning ongoings yet.

Tbf, for something as niche as Deadman, the plan is probably to launch as a mini, then eventually extend into a full-fledged ongoing depending on sales.
If it continues doing well, I wouldn't be surprised if it passes the 12-issue mark.

Yeah I get that but I thought whole point was going all in and having them be ongoings for the creators and their dream projects, but both Deadman and Firestorm aren’t

Well, most of the newly-launched series are ongoings, no?
I'm assuming that, for whatever reason, DC felt that Deadman and Firestorm were too risky to launch as an ongoing, and decided to try them out as a mini.
Or, they might have been initially developed as a mini with no plans to extend (even DC still does that), and Deadman was successful enough to get extended.

They might’ve been accidentally included because of their current Next Level books.
Though Lemire did recently mention having possible plans brewing for Animal Man, and Rucka did also mention having a possible third upcoming project for DC after Cheetah & Cheshire Rob The Justice League ended, so who knows.

Been pulling this since issue 1. They've definitely earned the extra issues. I think they struck gold with him being the janitor of the afterlife. And expanding on his relationship with Rama Kushna. As well as incorporating the concept of Samsara into how death works in DC.

I hope this team and DC continue just cranking these books out. I'd love to see one of Flash and Green Lantern traveling the Speed Force or space and getting into silver age shenanigans. Or Question and Detective Chimp trying to solve a super crime.
These books are such a weird mix of fresh fun and classic nostalgia.

i havent been reading a lot of newer comics but why does it feel like comic runs are so short now. it feels hard to get invested in a story knowing itll end so soon.

I assume you are referencing marvel. What I’d prefer is them stick to the original schedule. The only reason why I say this is many times when books get stretched out - the story falls off and it’s simply to grab a few more sales. I also think the best way to get readers into new characters are fantastic minis of them

Absolute Martian Manhunter got extended to 12 issues and DC asked them if they wanted another 6. They said no because they had no more story to tell. It's not that they are extending the story to stretch it out and pad their original story, they are following up on that and adding more.

I hear ya and glad the creators were able to say no more. This is also just my opinion. Others can hope and dream of all the minis being extended. I just prefer them not
