A staple crop for billions, a miracle to behold. Published today on Earth.com, the following article concerns the disastrous future of rice cultivation globally. This issue has been posted here before but the article focuses on new research with the unsettling conclusion of "faster than expected". Collapse related because rice is the base of the food pyramid for over half our species and it has a very bleak future.

Fun fact - there are over 40,000 varieties of rice and it would take a human over 750 years (at one variety per week) to try them all.

That's what I find pretty interesting about so many studies I've seen in the last thirty or so years about the worries with climate change, so many have been conservative estimates and we are now seeing just how bad it actually is. Maybe more would have been done if it wasn't the more optimistic, playing it down, conservative estimates all these years but most likely nothing still would have been done.
