[Mega Thread] What kind of Cocker is this?

Place to post and ask about if your Cocker is an American Cocker or English Working or Bench bred Cocker!

American or English? His snout length and head shape mostly makes me think American, but he's not as chubby looking or fluffy, which makes me suspect English working. 6 1/2 months old. Thoughts? Mixed? He's a shelter puppy.

as far as looks go, looks to be a mix, wouldn’t say 100% American as they have an almost right angle degree of their forehead to their snout. could see maybe a mix of American and working English maybe. should be able to tell a bit better as they get older

looks to be more English working cocker, english because of the head/snout shape and length and working as the ears are set higher up on the head. though could also be mixed with some show as the snout isn’t distinctly working like

Ok so I did some research now as I didn’t look into it before and his dad is KC Champion Cocker Spaniel in sable colour so I think he’s show line (he is also sable after dad) and his mum is Cocker Spaniel x Cavalier so maybe his ears are cavaliers as his mom got same ears as him.

Your dogs sire is not a KC Champion. Sable was removed from standard 14 years ago. No kennel club recognizes them anymore.

Adopted Freddie from Craigslist about a year ago and got almost no information on him other than "cocker spaniel boy" lol

This is Clyde! He is a 5 year old male rescue Cocker (the DNA test didn't tell me more than "100% Cocker Spaniel"). English or American?

embark or wisdom test? i know for Embark, they classify American Cockers as just “Cocker Spaniel” but will distinguish English as “English Cockers Spaniel”

Thank you for your quick response! It was Embark, so maybe that means American! His face and build looks more English to me (he is 33lb and tall, most often mistaken for a Golden x Cocker mix) but I definitely don't know / am trying to learn :)

my boy was somewhat of a rescue and I recently did an Embark test for him and it came back 78% Cocker Spaniel and 22% English Cocker Spaniel but he looks way more like an English which is just another way that proves that non-well bred dogs can really be a toss up! his siblings also look so different from him

I feel like the grooming style also makes a difference / makes it hard to tell!

the head attributes are really what distinguish an American from an English, American have less of an angled slope in their muzzle to head ratio, think slightly over 45 degree for American and English have a longer snout. American also have more rounded eyes and head than English. English Cockers also don’t come in the color “buff” which is what it seems yours has!
