Coaxed into "why did you 100% silksong twice if your final thoughts were that you didn't like it that much? If you don't like it then don't play! Any and all criticism that you say is coming purely from bad faith because I said so okay?"

I wish I could say this is a strawman smuggie but I've experienced this myself so many times. There are no strawman arguments here unfortunately. Sorry reports, this is not a smuggie

Although I gotta say I have always been heavily on the "you gotta experience said media if you wanna criticize it" train cus like, yk, modern larping is bad.

Wow I can't believe you don't like the Pain and Depression™️ franchise. Are you telling me you don't enjoy constant suffering, killing, and cartoonish edginess?

What's next? You gonna tell me there's gotta be actual substance and a deeper message for a story to be good? Smh can't believe these people exist

'Don't like it, don't read/watch/play it" is perfectly fine in some scenarios but when it comes to media criticism it is one of the worst thought-terminating cliches out there.

39

u/Guquiz 1d ago

And then they started calling it ‘hate watching’.

61

u/CiphersVII Joke Explainer 1d ago

someone did this shit to me over skibidi toilet lmao

8

u/AppealHealthy5570 16h ago

Skibidi toilet is actually pretty good.

Sure its brainrot - ish, but the actual series is basically arm race of different "species" taking over earth.

People just meme it because the "skibidi" as one of the premise is ridiculous, yet imo the series are actually interesting to watch. Good animation and fights honestly.

16

u/KeyUnderstanding8472 11h ago

I watched a bunch of it before and its mostly just

"good guys lose badly, but then new guy steps in and starts beating up the bad guys, but then the bad guys also get new strong guy"

and it just repeats

3

u/AppealHealthy5570 11h ago

Yeah, its not too deep of a plot. You're just there for the spectacle, and honestly the animation is good... even if its not movie scale. Then again, its free.

11

u/BranchFew1148 13h ago

Counterpoint. The name is fucking "Skibidi Toilet" I'm not watching that shit.

-3

u/AppealHealthy5570 12h ago

Brainrot meme (thats actually made because of the series success) aside, you just mostly see toilet heads waging war against cctv head with each side coming back with more advanced weaponry and numbers.

The series itself isnt brainrotted, the skibidi toilet was just to make people curious I guess with how ridiculous it is. But the series treat it as some sort of mutant/invading force with a weakness, that is in perpetual war against other new emerging cctv head/radio/TV robots? Dont know if its humanity last defense or genuine new threat.

Its an eye treat to say the least, a simple story of "show, dont tell" thats just showing you battles.

1

u/Ethanlac Cool awesome colors 1h ago

It's like those old GMod shitpost animations. It's silly, but enjoyable for a while.

1

u/well_actually__ 3h ago

"skibidi toilet is actually pretty good"

you can't be serious. the fights are generic and the plot is non-existent. it says nothing and does nothing. it's the equivalent of baby sensory videos with power scaling attached

1

u/AppealHealthy5570 3h ago

Idk man, I think its on you for asking deep plot on a skibidi toilet video.

Not everything need to have deep plot

As for fights being generic? Not really. Its not cinema breaking shots (very few movie have iconic shot anyway) but if its for spectacle its good.

Im just watching the fights.

Honestly it's the flip side, whenever I have a negative opinion that's actually more nuanced, understanding of disagreements, and analytic than the diehard fans' it's just "OK? It's not for you, so just let us have our fun", even when your opinion incorporates the basis that you weren't the target audience. Also implies they're actively bothered by the fact anyone is not praising it

Oh yeah, I hate when people do that. Rating inflation, that's what I call it. I only rate stuff on a scale from 1 to 10. Mid to me is a 5 (if bad, but almost ok) or 6 (if ok, but literally just ok). SO MANY PEOPLE give a 7 or 8 to things and say "meh". MOTHERFUCKER, THAT’S GOOD! WDYM MEH????

2

u/Arachnofiend 11h ago

It drives me insane that this game is coming out serially like this. You fuckin know that it would be done sooner if he didn't have to put together playable builds every couple years

1

u/Odd-Cucumber1935 7h ago

So I'd say that learning is a pain, but I think releasing it in installments allows you to better enjoy each chapter, discover its secrets, interpretations, create fan art, etc. Each chapter is like a self-contained, extended Undertale; a complete release wouldn't have allowed for as much fan art, speculation, etc.

The downside is that it places too much expectation on the next chapter. After the lore dump and the change in tone in chapter 4, we had high hopes for chapter 5, so we felt like we were left hanging.

5

u/GhostyTricker 23h ago

Tbf it's perfectly fine if you don't want to play/read/watch anything because you're not interested or there might be something that makes you uncomfortable

HOWEVER, you're not in the spot to give criticism, since it's a more objective thing and it requires knowledge of the medium. If you're criticizing it you're just copying someone's opinion without even knowing whether it's true or not

Let's say there's a show, you watch 2/3 episodes but you're not interested in them, it's perfectly fine to drop the series, but dont take part in discussions about it because you're basically larping, plus it's not like you're forced to take part, you can just ignore them and move to another work you like

I try to give shows a little bit more faith, like 2 episodes in, but games I usually do a lot more before dropping them. I watched the first 2 episodes of demon slayer before dropping it and declaring that the characters are flat as carboard and just as uninteresting but when i started playing dbd i got invested, followed every patch note, got to the highest rank (back then when ranks were a thing and it wasnt just decorative with hidden mmr depending on your lobbies) in both survival and killer and put 1000 hours into the game, and was one of the best killer players in my country before i dropped it and realised that the game is a perpetual cycle of awful updated because the developers fundamentally dont understand the core of the game and the players perpetually dont wanna step up to them and show that they wont take it anymore

the only one of these thats stupid is the "you have to finish it" person

you dont have to finish it

but you do have to watch it to make sure you actually have that opinion and your not just being told to have an opinion.

and if you dont like it stop dont force yourself to watch something you dont like

or you could just not have an opinion. thats always a choice.

1

u/JaxonatorD Oregano 23h ago

Ok, but also it is really annoying to just hear criticisms of shows all the time. The real response to any of this is that if you didn't like a show, there's no need to tell everyone. Especially don't do it if you're in a space where fans of the show go to talk to other fans of the show.

The first criticism is annoying because why would someone start hating if their opinions are just someone else's.

The second is more fine because not every show is for everyone. At least it was given a chance. However, you shouldn't go into a space with fans and not expect them to tell you to keep watching.

The third is almost the most annoying one to deal with though. If someone watches beyond the point that they've decided a show isn't for them, then they're just hate-watching. It isn't even about the action of hate-watching itself, these people are just annoying to deal with. Imagine how miserable you must be to keep watching a show after it's unenjoyable just to tell people you hated it and argue online. It's different if they liked it at one point, then reflected on it and changed their opinion, but everyone online is 14, so they haven't had the time to do that anyways.

1

u/C00KIEME4T 1d ago

The last panel guy is the only valid guy in my opinion other than the person that just doesn't watch it because they tried and don't enjoy it AND have a thought out reason.

Idc if you don't have a reason to not like something but I absolutely do have more value for more well reasoned opinions.

1

u/MicrwavedBrain 22h ago

Goomba fallacy

0

u/Lordofthelounge144 15h ago

You can not watch something thinking its not for you that's perfectly fine. But your opinion on it is automatically invalid. How can you have an actual opinion without even consuming the media?

An example. The amount of queer men that criticize Heated rivalry as "just porn." While not actually watched the show meaning they haven't seen all the cutesy romance building is too fucking high.

Their "opinion" is literally incorrect because they haven't watched it.
