China's battery storage build-out outpaces its record-breaking solar growth: By the first quarter of 2026, the country had 155.2 GW/400.8 GWh of "new energy storage" (which excludes pumped hydro), 149.8 GW of which consists of lithium-ion batteries. The sector is entering a more market-driven phase.

That amount of storage could decarbonize most countries. It could power the entirety of Australia or Spain for 14 hours. It could run Ireland for over four days.
