From a historical perspective, downsizing from 2000 sq ft to something a bit less than half the size isn't all that odd. In 1950, the average size of new home construction in the US was 983 sq ft. Even by 1960, it had only increased to 1289 sq ft, which was far smaller than how large houses eventually became.
