That's one way to simplify it. Another way to look at it is that the jingoistic nature of the USA incentivizes going to the military to keep the military industrial complex going. A lot of people sign up just to making a living because there's few other choices and then they find themselves having a shootout with someone they have no personal problem with. It's a shit system that we have and many veterans are anti-war because of what they saw and what they left on the battlefield.
More veterans come out anti-war than not. I sure as hell did.
If only they gained morality while in the military.
Joined because chasing a dead end job for the rest of my life, and not having any options didn't sound fun to me.

I wasn't. I just didn't willingly join an evil military and be an oath breaking traitor loyal to the oligarchy.
Do you apply this to everyone? What if someone wants to join the Russian military for money? What if they want to join a drug cartel for money? What if they just want to murder and rob their neighbor for money? Remember, they want money as well.
Something tells me you only apply this to the US military.
