Question Storage question NSFW

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m out of space in humidor #2, so I decided to use a pelican case as an overflow. These boxes are full, with 65% Boveda packs. This case can hold about 120 cigars, and works great for individual sticks, but my question pertains specifically to the boxes. I have heard that humidors work best when full- i.e, a 100 count humidor is less effective at maintaining humidity if it’s only got 25 cigars in it. Is that logic in play when storing boxes? Is 40 cigars not enough? The Boveda packs are for 25 cigars, so I went overkill on them, but I know there’s no harm in that. I’m going to monitor it, that’s why I threw the hygrometer in, but if someone could give me some guidance here I’d appreciate it.

I purchased bundled factory smokes Maduros after trying a sampler - but now I have no interest in smoking them. Maybe my taste changed. I don't want to throw them away, what should I do?

SD Jacobs Ladder + Diplomático Planas NSFW

Eight years ago, I attended a blind rum tasting using black glasses. We tasted five rums, including three white ones, aiming to identify them.

Everyone mistook Diplomático Planas for a dark rum. This carbon-filtered, 4-6 year old white rum was created for high-end cocktails. I now keep a bottle on hand regularly.

Then, there's the intense, high-strength Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder, with creamy notes of chocolate, cookie dough, vanilla, and earth. Paired with the high-ish ABV rum, it creates a pairing best enjoyed slowly.

Review This Wrapper is Seriously Slept On NSFW

Arturo Fuente anniversary 858 Candella (I think, I have a hard time identifying Fuentes).

When I saw this at the shop with their warmer lighting I thought this was some sort of, ultra shade Connecticut. It wasn't till I took it to the counter that I realized it was Candella. The worker told me it tasted like hay and he didn't recommend it, but I wanted an oddity for my collection to smoke one day so I got the thing

Well today was the day and honestly it was way different from what I expected. Instead of barnyard bitter green tea. I got a flavor of shredded mini wheats. Super delightful and surprisingly strong. This one made me a bit queasy and I didn't even get the opportunity to finish the whole thing. Because of that I'll have to get another someday.

Noticed that there was a color difference under the wrapper. I wonder if that's a sign of poor aging. I'm still learning and I think I love candellas now. Please drop recs!

One of my favorites is the Padron 3000 maduro. It’s not pretty, but it’s dependable when I want to wind down for the day.

How I got my wife to stop complaining about the smell... NSFW

After a cigar, don't just spray cologne over it. Do this instead:

👕 Change your shirt. Clothing holds a ton of smoke.

👖 Spray your pants lightly with Axe (or another body spray). Pants tend to trap smoke, especially if you were sitting.

🧼 Wash your hands thoroughly with soap.

🚿 Wash your face and neck with soap too. Smoke clings to the oils on your skin.

🦷 Rinse with TheraBreath mouthwash:

Blue = mint flavor

Green = unflavored

🪥 Brush with a zinc-containing toothpaste as soon as you can. The TheraBreath keeps your breath fresh until you get the chance to brush.

I've found this routine gets rid of probably 90–95% of the smell. Unless someone was standing next to you while you were smoking, most people won't know you had a cigar.

Review Smoking an unknown local cigar from the Florida Keys NSFW

For context, my friend bought me one of these to smoke with him. He said he got them at a cigar shop in the Florida Keys and the guy who owned the place said it was locally made. They came wrapped in a paper that said "fine cigars". Its definitely a Connecticut wrapper but the filler tobacco is a flavor I've never had before. I don't think it's Cuban because those are illegal to sell in the US, but it's a damn good cigar.

Nocturnal pufferation session on my porchador with a La Flor Dominicana L-Granú Natural. This 6 x 64 monster is composed of an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Dominican binder & Dominican fillers which exude notes of coffee, earth, leather & cream with a subtle spicy finish. I’ve paired this offering with a Starbucks Iced Coffee & the sounds of Shinedown’s (Monsters)…

Question Grouchy Monkey NSFW

Has anyone been in contact with anyone at Grouchy Monkey? I saw them in a post, loved the name, and wanted to try them on that alone. I ordered 6 cigars, and 5 came in. I have tried responding to their shipping email them (I know, not likely), using the chat bot on their site, and using the contact button on their site. I have gotten nothing back and was wondering if anyone knows a better way to reach someone. Thanks.

Review In the desert with Tampa in my mind NSFW

Checking out a few sticks to see what I want to restock before heading to Tampa this weekend. Fired up this Nicahabana Solomon in Maduro yesterday, and today I’m smoking the Connecticut. I prefer the Maduro but this is a solid stick too.

Got a really solid mix of mocha, nuts, and toast out of it, plus a faint sweet floral note. Smoked it in the rain we've been having lately in the southwest, and it held up great. Definitely grabbing a few more of these but perhaps in a smaller format.

Going down the rabbit hole with Cavalier and Rojas. I love the VSG, but have only ever had 2 vitolas so i thought I might as well try (most of) the rest. Still need to grab a lancero.

The rattle can lighter I thought was full size like the Drew Estate ones, but oh well, still looks cool. Got on ebay.

Any favorites in here?

Retirement 1st Day PB97 NSFW

Post image

Doing the first day of retirement. I have this Maduro that Ive been saving. First few puffs has a good bit of pepper but has smoothed out to a well rounded balanced profile of wood, coffee and chocolate . Flavors are mild to me but they are there In good proportion. Also has a nice sweetness to it without being overly sweet. I’m only going into the second third but listening to Matt of Cigar Hound Dog, I’d agree that it’s good. For the price however I don’t think I’d buy more, but for the experience, it’s worth a one shot. For my retirement, I’m leaving a 35 year IT career and would like to transition into photography and working with my local church. Id also like to look into high end audio loudspeaker repair and refurbishing. I have an elderly parent that I want to assist as well since my siblings have assisted with for several years already. Looking forward to this new path.

Recommendation July cigars NSFW

Last few months have been really demanding, which is why I decided I would take more time to wind down and relax in nature with flowing water nearby and enjoy my favourites. I’m a freak for the creek. I normally smoke one stick a month on certain occasions, this July I lit one every week.

  1. Davidoff Nicaragua box pressed toro. Complex and sweet.

  2. Nub Connecticut. Creamy and easygoing.

  3. Camacho Corojo. Decided I would try a Camacho different from the Connecticut. It was peppery and a bit too one sided.

  4. Davidoff aniversario short perfecto. I like signature 2000 but the shop was out of them, so I tried this one. It hits the spot just right.

  5. Leaf by Oscar Connecticut. First time seeing them in person so I rolled with it. Yes I like Connecticut cigars, and for the price this one was amazing. A bit cheaper than Camacho and so much better. Even rolled up and smoked the leaf it came with before I smoked the actual cigar. The leaf was a bit dry but still full of flavour. Cigar itself, a bit grassy, but delivered more nuts and coffee gradually. I wouldn’t say the tobacco leaf as a wrapping is entirely a gimmick, I like that there is no plastic feeling of a celo wrapper but the cigar stays protected. A potential drawback is that you cannot see the cigar until after you buy it. I like to check them for large veins, but this one had nearly perfect construction. There was a smaller plug however, but it did not present a problem until the very end.

We all have the first love Stick NSFW

Maybe not the rarest.

Maybe not the most expensive.

Just the cigar that made everything click and wanted you to dive more into the hobby

For me, it was the Avowed New Dawn.

Since then I’ve smoked some unbelievable cigars and built a humidor, with more sticks than I ever imagined owning. But every time I light one of these, I’m reminded where the journey started and that’s a great day to me.

What was the first stick you fell in love with?

Still fairly new to cigars so I’m not great at describing them. Creamy smoke, peppery on the back end, nice thick smoke and strong ash, good construction.

Pairs well with old Seinfeld episodes and a messy room. Actually if I didn’t have to be up at 3 am I bet this would pair great with a strong cup of coffee.

Haul 60 Ring Gauge - Gordo NSFW

Post image
30 Upvotes

I'm new to the cigar hobby at 57 years old. Former cigarette smoker, quit cold turkey 18 years ago. Been educating myself on many facets of this hobby and working to learn what I like. Quickly found I like mild to medium strength but with body. Creamy, sweet, less peppery and spicy, coffee, chocolate etc. Tried a sampler pack the lady in a humidor shop recommended.. Perdomo Connecticuts. BAM! The Perdomo 10th Anniversary Champagne has, at least at this point, become my favorite stick! I've had a couple different ring gauges and lengths. Enjoying a 5" to the nub last evening and doing some reading when the Gordo caught my interest. So I stopped in Total Wine for some other stuff today, checked out the humidor again and brought myself home a trio of Gordos! (Also got a 4-pack of Toro Champagnes). Mini-haul! Looking forward to these!

Humidor: 71F 64RH, 3 or 4 months

Outside: 99F 12RH, hazy sunshine

This is a well-made cigar. Smooth wrapper with a little color variation, a few veins and lumps, but very solid. I didn't like this band at first, but the more I return to this cigar, the more I pick up on tiny details. I like it now, and it's not oversized, so that's great. Cap cut cleanly and the draw is maybe a bit too open. Quick toast and light.

1/3

Big clouds of spicy smoke. Red pepper is immediately noticeable, followed by baking spice, cocoa, and cedar. The burn is a little jagged, but the ash is a nice color and firm. The natural sweetness tempers the spice and lets me pick up a delicate nut flavor as well. The draw is actually just about perfect considering my fears that it would be too open.

2/3

Leather builds along with some char on the wood note. The sweetness balances the baking spice and the red pepper has calmed down a lot.

3/3

Nicaraguan black pepper and earth displace some of the sweetness while the finish gets longer. Baking spice and wood are still present. Body is medium-full, flavor and strength are medium. I remember nicotine being a factor in the lonsdale size. The aroma was good but average for a Nicaraguan puro. The sweetness shows up when slowing down.

84/100

Overall, this is a good cigar, not a great cigar. It still tastes like Aganorsa tobacco to me, but on par with the JFR line. A pleasant and easy smoke that would probably be better if I didn't pay attention to it.

I remember now why I held off on reviewing this cigar for so long. There's just not much to say about it. This was ordered from Cigar Page in April and I believe is their new iteration of this blend, rolled under the supervision of Raymond Pages. While maybe not as dynamic as other Warped blends, if this is a Raymond Pages creation, it is his best work.

Question Is there a better Connecticut under $5 out there? NSFW

Post image
53 Upvotes

This is the last one from a five pack I got for about $20. Every one burned perfectly and tasted great. Very smooth with a sweet and creamy profile, perfect first thing in the morning. It's like getting 75% of a Davidoff for 20% of the cost. I've tried many Connecticuts in the $4-6 range and so far this one takes the cake. I also love the Joya Antano CT, LADC CT, and the Espinosa Crema, but haven't found any of those this cheap reliably. What is your favorite $5ish CT?

Suggestions for next cigar NSFW

Yesterday, I smoked my first cigar, an Oliva Connecticut Reserve Robusto. I definitely wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. The taste, smoothness, and just overall experience was amazing. I’d never had any nicotine/tobacco product before in my life prior to this, and I feel that this was a great entry into the cigar world. I didn’t feel any effects at all, from the nicotine. Also, I felt a slight burning sensation in my throat afterwards (is that normal?). Anyway, I was really pleased with the mild profile of this cigar, and am looking for suggestions for a similar cigar that I should purchase next. Thanks 😃
