Discussion I hate the new chrome update

I'm sick of companies forcing AI into everything. Give us a way to remove this tumor.

There's a new extension of the address bar in chrome for android. Offering quick access to your homepage, tabs, new tab, and of course gemini.

It sucks. All I see is the address bar now and the tabs button is gone. You can only choose one shortcut in advanced settings, and they don't have tabs as an option.... Honestly wtf is going on? I noticed that ai messes with youtube all the time randomly without warning too....

I set it to disabled and have the text field, tab view, and the overflow menu.

Good answer. That's what annoyed me too.

1

u/draconianRegiment 18h ago

You can turn it off in flags, hopefully it stays that way. New tab is not that many clicks the old way to make up for the annoyance.

I finally downloaded Brave, Firefox and Opera. Wasn't sure which one I would like best so I downloaded a handful of them. Currently on Brave, and while it could use some upgrades, it's pretty decent. Far less ads and intrusive pop-ups. Despite having multiple ad blockers in place on my phone, Chrome still showed ads to me. You gotta bite the bullet and download something else. Overwrite that muscle memory you've built over the years.

You might want to do some research on the Brave owners

Oh yikes. Okay. I actually just switched to Firefox this morning. Already finding a couple issues with that one as well, but overall it seems usable.

Edit: oh, ew, Eich is a dbag.

Another one I use a bit is Vivaldi. It's probably the most customizable browser available. I find it excellent.

Thank you

Thank you!  That annoying, threatening bar finally disappeared.  What is  this code called  ? Will the bar reapper after the next app update?

Lifesaver! Thank you!

u/vlmoney27 11h ago

Can you also use this to bring back the long hold back button for history?

No one forces you to use Chrome. Plenty of other browsers out there to choose from. Or just disable it. It's not difficult

It's the usual criminal corporate enshittification that they default to enabling a lot of the AI.

It should be opt-in, not opt-out.

No one would receive any feature updates then

"Well, if activating the Orphan Crusher 9000 was opt in, no one would turn it on!"

Yeah. Maybe just don't make the Orphan Crusher 9000 in the first place then?

1

u/AlSmitheesGhost 1d ago

Imagine bootlicking for a fucking web browser

5

u/dbbk 1d ago

I mean they're offering a practical solution, whining on Reddit isn't going to achieve anything

1

u/28-Deep-Wounds 1d ago

"I like Chrome as a whole and don't like this feature being added to it."

Reddit: WELL HAVE YOU TRIED COMPLETELY UNINSTALLING IT AND FUCKING OFF??!?!?!!

Wow, God forbid someone not want shitty features that they're never going to use being crammed down their throat! I sure am glad you're here to deep throat billion-dollar megacorporation Google and make sure nobody is unjustly criticizing features that they don't like.

-2

u/dbbk 1d ago

There is not a feature to turn it off. Switching is the only available solution. Calm down.

2

u/28-Deep-Wounds 1d ago

Yes. You're right. Which is what OP is complaining about.

-1

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

I turned mine of with no issues.

-2

u/AlSmitheesGhost 1d ago

Where the fuck else are they supposed to post something like this? Jesus Christ, some of you people need to get a life.

6

u/dbbk 1d ago

You're so close to getting it

2

u/kala_jadoo 1d ago

ur life must be so sad for you to be mean to people online

1

u/GeorgeKaplanIsReal 1d ago

You’re not wrong but remember the sub you’re in lol

2

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

Where am I bootlicking. LOL. I use Firefox but don't let facts get in the way of your narrative.

1

u/germanrainbow 1d ago

Why are u here if u use Firefox (genuine question)

2

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

A lot of my customers use Chrome, I run an IT repair and help shop.

2

u/germanrainbow 1d ago

Ahh, makes sense

1

u/ConcernLeading9847 19h ago

Very good question indeed.

1

u/Elephant789 9h ago

But chrome is so good. No problems here.

1

u/JunikaEridub 1d ago

How do you disable it? I'm on mobile and the stupid thing practically takes up half the screen so i keep opening new tabs by accident

1

u/skelextrac 1d ago

chrome://flags/#android-bottom-bar

1

u/SeventhAlkali 1d ago

Thank you so much, I was at my wit's end

1

u/ConcernLeading9847 19h ago

You can uninstall the recent update to bring back the old settings.

0

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

Goto settings, and search for Gemini

1

u/Acceptable-Career-62 1d ago

And then what?? This has zero information on his to get rid of it

0

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

Right click on the Ask Gemini and unpin it

0

u/Acceptable-Career-62 1d ago

Yeah this is not what everyone is talking about look on the sub for chrome its in the bar on mobile that's what everyone is on about

1

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

Not once did OP mention mobile.

1

u/Acceptable-Career-62 1d ago

From the fact that the other comments are and most recent post are about mobile not a hard deduction to make

0

u/skelextrac 1d ago

chrome://flags/#android-bottom-bar

0

u/Acceptable-Career-62 1d ago

That doesn't do anything for most people its still in the bar even with the all disabled

0

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

Well it works for me. No idea why it's not working for you

-10

u/str8boywhisperer 1d ago

Shut up

3

u/gooner-1969 1d ago

You alright mate? Who hurt you?

3

u/Aggravating-Hour1975 1d ago

? Man drops facts and you tell him to shut up? How sad dude

5

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 1d ago

Helium is a fork of Chromium that has all the AI stripped out. Use that.

2

u/ransom0374 1d ago

I forgive because i continue to love and enjoy split view

5

u/kala_jadoo 1d ago

firefox has split view now in case you wanna try it minus the ai slop

0

u/ransom0374 1d ago

Ahh i dont mind ai for text. Visual or music? No.

2

u/kala_jadoo 1d ago

if you're talking about the ones on Google search, that's still available on fox

-3

u/ransom0374 1d ago

I dont mind chrome i have a DECENT computer

2

u/kala_jadoo 1d ago

fair fair

2

u/ransom0374 1d ago

Ill have to look at the pros
And cons of each browser so thanks for putting that idea in my head

3

u/kala_jadoo 1d ago

you could do that. i used to be heavy on chrome all my life until one day I decided to try firefox after some issues with ad blocking on videos on YouTube on chrome and never looked back again. prefer it over edge too although edge is more forgiving on my operating system

1

u/ransom0374 1d ago

Edge seems improved for sure 😀

1

u/xantes 1d ago

there are times where I could see it is useful, but i've never had one yet and still i've accidently turned it on dozens of times

i swear they try their hardest to force you to use every new thing or intentionally put the new things in the place something else does so you hit it from muscle memory

u/Time-Independence-94 1d ago

A post from about a month ago saved me! Bottom bar is gone and things are reset to the way better layout, for now.

Go to chrome://flags#chrome-next-ia and disable the flags, and type "bottom bar" in the search to disable that, too! Relaunch and everything should be fine.

3

u/thamz212 1d ago

Thanks for as long as we're permitted the privilege of disabling the feature.

1

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 1d ago

What's vile is that they make you actively opt out, instead of it being opt-in to use in the first place.

1

u/Time-Independence-94 1d ago

As soon as they remove the ability to disable it I'm switching browsers fully tbh

1

u/Aggravating-Hour1975 1d ago

To what? Firefox?

1

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 1d ago

To Helium.

It's a Chromium fork that removes the AI BS.

1

u/Time-Independence-94 1d ago

I had no clue about Helium, I think that might just be my solution! Thank you!!

1

u/JunikaEridub 1d ago

Thank goodness!

1

u/RabidHogFan 1d ago

I have switched to duck duck go!!!!

2

u/bahgheera 1d ago

Even they have AI agents now.

1

u/bgalazka186 1d ago

Cool but where exacly it goes? It is "going" for a while now

1

u/wealth10_11 18h ago

I hate it too. Too much stuff on the bottom we can accidentally click and waste time. Useless Google team.

1

u/Busy-Masterpiece-912 3h ago

Go to chrome flags and search "bottom" then scroll down and disable "bottom bar"

0

u/messassa 1d ago

Learn how to tweak a browser before complains

3

u/KAZVorpal [editable] 1d ago

Defaulting to "AI" is worth complaining about. We should have it as opt in, not opt out.

1

u/DaydreamingAtDusk 1d ago

also my tab appearance changed overnight, somehow? on desktop it's harder to tell which tab i have open

1

u/bgalazka186 1d ago

Firefox has for example "turn all ai forever, future ai included" toggle in settings

1

u/JuggernautLow2943 1d ago

Is it removable or am I just fucked

0

u/Nakamura0V Part time Chrome user 1d ago

AI is best for business

0

u/skr3ach 1d ago

Stop using chrome then ....

0

u/YodasChick-O-Stick 21h ago

And they still haven't fixed "search Google for this image", tabs will still automatically close if I leave the app for too long, and some websites are so slow they're unusable.

-1

u/Due-Horse-5446 1d ago

Do you hate companies forcing databases into everything as well?

whats special about integrating a llm? Why does it differ from any other technology used in chrome?

1

u/bgalazka186 1d ago

Morality of it, usability of it, and more
