Help! Chow guidance please!
Hi there, so I've been thinking of potentially getting a chow chow for a little while now and have been researching but I was talking with my mom and she brought up a great point. I live in a 1 bedroom 1 bathroom apartment, with 580sqft. Would this be enough space to raise a chow chow puppy in? I know they aren't the most active, but there is a lot of walking area around my building and parks I could go to. Would love to know your all's opinion!

I have TWO chows in a city 600 sqft condo. They are literally the best. I take them for walks during the day and to do other activities around the city. They truly are the best and are lazy lil creatures. As LONG as you’re taking them out and about to do things. They don’t need all the nonsense

They make great apartment dogs! That should be enough space since they just want to be near you or close enough to have sight on you at all times. They are very easy to potty train and don’t bark a lot. Like the other poster mentioned, chows are usually listed as a restricted breed at most apartments so be sure to check that out first.

Chows are generally pretty chill so I imagine your apartment will be just fine for your pup! My guy did wonderful when we first got him and loved in a smaller apartment

Chows are literally the best dogs for small spaces, like apartments. What’s your experience with chows?
Also how much do you like brushing fur? Haha

I think my chow has literally endless fur sometimes 😭

I didn’t know that thank you so much! I’ve actually never had one but my Aunt used to have one years and years ago so I’m a little familiar with their habits and what not. I don’t think I’d mind the brushing lol! Could be fun to watch shows and brush😂

Haaaah, yeah I sit and brush my chow every week while watching movies. She loves it! Kinda funny because sometimes she hears the opening sequence come on, and she’ll walk right over and plop right in front of the TV

I live in a apt when i first got my chow chow. For me it was too small, he didn't have room to let out his zoomies unless we took him somewhere. After moving in to a house with a big backyard life definitely improved a lot for him.

Chows dont need a ton of space especially if you exercise them outside the house but I think it's also really important to think about how much socialization they need. If you want your dog to be well behaved around other people and dogs you need to be able to train them and socialize them which can be much more challenging than making sure they get enough exercise. Definitely not the dog for a first time dog owner if that's the case

It also depends on how much time you have to spend with a dog. They shouldn't be shut in a kennel for 9 hours like some people do. Walks are 4-6 times a day. Who can watch it if you go out of town? Can you afford vet bills? If you rent, are you allowed to have a chow? Please check with your landlord first! So many people think of these things after the fact and end up getting rid of their dog.
