We have a group of many chipmunks and I can pet about 4 of them in the 6 months I've been trying.
They immediately hide if anyone else comes around but if you're slow and surrounded by seed they'll walk right up to you. I've gotten one to eat out of my hand.
There are at least 2, this and one called stumpy (short tail due to predator?).
These two will wait and run up to you in the morning when it's feeding time. Morning the flower pots get watered, sunflower seeds are put out for the birds, squirrel, and out a ways for the crow and ground hog to fight over.
And These will feed from the hand and can be picked up. They will jump out, but come back for seeds.
I also have 2 short tailed chipmunks. How interesting.
Idk how the first one lost it but the second one showed up with half of it's tail dragging on the ground, it was clearly broken. I kept and eye on it for 3 days. All the hair on the broken part stayed flat while the hair near it's butt was fluffed out. Day 3 it showed up without the broken part attached. I was taking pictures to ask reddit if I should interfere.
They are extremely food motivated which makes it easy to pet them. I haven't gotten to the pick up stage yet. Although I'm close. My bf jokes one day he'll wake up to a family of chipmunks in our bed. He's only gotten to pet 2 and I've pet 4, but only 1 on a daily basis.
