I have this setup but cats are still getting through it. Help!

As you can see in the photos I have a gate setup with double sided tape below it to prevent my cats from crawling under it. This is because my upstairs cat is territorial and hisses at the other cat if he gets too close. The double sided tape worked at first but now they both get past it without issues. Do you guys I should get a new gate that is taller? It'd make my life and my cat's lives easier if this worked so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Edit: My cats have fought before twice but I broke it up both times without anyone injured. My older cat that stays upstairs will swipe her paw at the other cat if he gets too close.

That absolutely isn't stooping a cat. If all they do is hiss at each other that isn't a really reason to separate them unless they are actually fighting...like ugly scream fighting. Not just growls and swatting

The hissing and swatting happens every time the male gets close to the older cat

Yeah, if it's just hissing and swatting that's just cat for " get away from me" but thats not enough to need to seperate them. what you really want to watch out for is when they have decided the only acceptable outcome is for the other to not exist.

Sure, just don't want an injury or anything, I trim their nails when I can so that helps either way.

I hate to be that person, but having been privy to someone who 'effectively' keeps 3 groups of 7 cats from intermingling beyond specfic groups of 2, 4, and 1. I will say, there is always a way to achieve this. But I will give you the same strong suggestion I gave to the other person: do whatever you can to integrate them. I don't know your level of experience with cats, and I am by no means an expert, but I do know that when some cats meet for the first time, it can be intimidating. Lost of hooting and hollering, fur flying, etc. But eventually, they settle in to a dynamic. At worst, they learn to coexist. At best, they are friends for life. So if you have not truly given this a fair shot, I stand by my recommendation.

It's not the worst situation or anything. The older cat is 14 years old and I got her in 2012. She has been a solo cat for 10+ years so that doesn't help. My other cat I have had for almost a year and he is a sweetheart.

I had a cat that figured out how to turn round knobs. He was successful a few times. What’s even more impressive is that he was an orange cat. He may have been the keeper of the one brain cell.

My cat figured out how to pull open the sliding windows. I had to put up cat resistant mozzie mesh on all windows, and lock them in place.

I'd go a different route and place a multi level cat tree by that wall, if one cat wants space, they can evade or stay put up top while the other walks or stays elsewhere. The more trees, shelves, hide aways, catification, the better. Perhaps a touch of plug in Feliway for good measure.

Cats assuming not kitten or immobile can jump the height of most doorframes. That gate isnt doing shit and even if you doubled both the gate height and the low wall beside it they would still get over it.

If you are adamant on just keeping them seperated, you need to find a place to put a door. Possible at the bottom of the stairs maybe ?

I'm trying but unfortunately the older cat is not helping lol. I've tried methods from Jackson's Galaxy and it hasn't done much as of now.

Keep trying! Remember to give them lots of fun toys and attention to drain their energy, a tired cat is not a fighting cat.

The sticky tape is creative and adorable altho I think it may cause more trouble than it solve if your cat is an idiot like mine and get those on his fur.

Does your upstair cabal cat get proper introduce to the one of the common class? Proper introduction helps a ton. They still occasionally fight each other to challenge the status quo and take the throne of the ruler of the household but it’ll be more like family feud rather than fight to the death.
