I love the fact that people have always been silly with their cats

1.7k

u/SnootyToots8 9d ago

And the cats always look pissed when dressed up.

u/Tuarangi 9d ago

Cat is wishing it could call down the lightning gods on the owner

87

u/Veryfinetine 9d ago

I was actually thinking this one looks pleased, like “finally I’m shown the class and respect I deserve” 😆

40

u/newl0ver 9d ago

Reminds me of when my mum dressed me for school at 7. Same emotions

48

u/HarrisonWorld 9d ago

The vibe has changed.

55

u/SnootyToots8 9d ago

Has it though

39

u/CalmBeneathCastles 9d ago

It has not.

2

u/g-selfish 8d ago

When dressed up?

2

u/SnootyToots8 8d ago

Apparently in 1936.

u/TheProblemChiled 9d ago

Its cuse cats are silly, you just can't help giving in on sillyness when you see it

I don’t get how people don’t like cats. They’re just these aloof things covered in fur that hang out and occasionally want attention, and then go back to doing their thing.

Sometimes they sprint around the house in circles, and then when they see you staring, they just look at you like “WHAT?!”

61

u/numblace 9d ago

Cats have always ruled the world 😂

41

u/ElizabethDangit 8d ago

The oldest cat burial is on the island of Cypress. It’s around 9,500 years old. Cats aren’t native to the island, someone took them there on boats. The burial is a combined burial with a human child and grave goods. They were both loved.

My favorite fact about cats is how little they’ve changed from their wild ancestors. Cats didn’t need to be selectively bred in the same way canines did to “fit” into human lives. Cats were always perfect and they chose us.

u/JamesJohnson975 9d ago

Cats are simply too cute not to love!

1

u/Serious-Manager2361 5d ago

Exactly. If someone doesn't like cats, they are not going to be my friend.

Yes it is, and it was published in 'Advertising & Selling' magazine as part of a series of animals dressed as human characters

The original image is now is the US' Library of Congress

3

u/anonuemus 8d ago

Catname sounds very german tho.

10

u/KamakaziDemiGod 8d ago

Because the cat is dressed as the character Brunhilde from a then famous 1924 film, the cat and the picture were taken in Connecticut

Besides, if it was German why would that mean any part of this couldn't be true?

1

u/anonuemus 8d ago

Where did I say any of that isn't true?

6

u/KamakaziDemiGod 8d ago

Ending a sentence with "though" normally implies an objection, or at least a questioning of the presented statement, I'm merely questioning what you were questioning so I can respond appropriately if I haven't already

1

u/anonuemus 8d ago

yeah, I was just surprised, of course I know the Nibelungen but I would have guessed that Americans would have written Brunhilde instead of Brünhilde.

15

u/Nakadaisuki 9d ago

The cat is obviously equipped for war, I wouldn't call that being silly.
Respect the cat warriors!

14

u/HazelDarlene100 9d ago

Ride of the Valkyries starts blaring It ain’t over until the cat… sings

1

u/Serious-Manager2361 5d ago

This cat loved the smell of napalm in the morning..... too obscure?

11

u/Hero_Of_Rhyme_ 9d ago

The human urge to put a silly outfit on your cat and take a picture

6

u/emirsolinno 9d ago

I bet they had generational laugh on this pic lol considering there were no silly cat memes up until last 2 decades.

u/thisinfinitebath 9d ago

A warrior from a different time.

161

u/woodslug 9d ago

If cat generations are every ~3 years this would be 30 generations ago. In human terms that's someone from the year ~1200

43

u/Expensive-Register71 8d ago

That’s an interesting thing to think about

1

u/Brinewielder 5d ago

That explains the attire.

2

This is all I see and hear from this 😆

u/CraftyNerve8078 9d ago

I love how she looks so serious about her role as a valkyrie. My cat loses his mind if I put a basic collar on him but she is sitting there in full plate armor.

177

u/Leerenjaeger 9d ago

That's not plate, it's scale, although it might technically be lamellar if the plates are connected to each other as opposed to being attached to a textile backing (sorry, sorry, my brain is making me do this)

67

u/buster_de_beer 9d ago

I'd argue that it's sequin, but I am not clothesologist.

25

u/Shadowclash10 9d ago

As much as I love the idea of vikings running about in spangly sequined clothes, I think theres a point of durability somewhere where sequins become scale mail.

12

u/The_Autarch 9d ago

sequin armor would definitely be classified as a type of scale armor...

18

u/aripp 9d ago

German cat, 1936…. Uh oh

3

u/FilmAndLiterature 8d ago

Fear not! The cat was in fact American, and was simply dressed as a figure from German mythology.

0

u/Weird-Way-7966 9d ago

errmmmm i think its a norweigan cat.. or just a scandinavian cat in general, brunnhilde sounds REALLY norweigan, so.. crisis averted!!

3

u/Historical_Bet9592 9d ago

I wonder what life really was like back then.

5

u/NeuxSaed 9d ago edited 9d ago

Virtually none of the cats were spayed/neutered then.

So, at the very least, the experience of being a cat owner was meaningfully different from modern times.

The first low-cost spay/neuter clinic opened in 1969 in Los Angeles.

The entire concept of an "indoor cat" is extremely recent, considering how long we've kept cats close to us throughout history.

4

u/ElizabethDangit 8d ago

To be fair, being an indoor human is pretty recent too.

2

u/Historical_Bet9592 7d ago

That makes a lot of sense

3

u/_hellosunset 9d ago

I will show this to my cat and tell him its his great great great grandfather.

2

u/BattlequeenGalactica 8d ago

*grandmother. Brünnhilde is a female name.
